I think its time to make a little guessing game. While people where so convinced to know the date of the announcement of the Switch's sucessor- whatever it will be called- its interesting what you guys think. Personally I think we can as good as exclude the possibility of a 2024 announcement. According to my opinion the earliest date could be january 2- 9 (CES 2025). But i am not excluding the possibility of a late march announcement. A release in march seems more unlikley every passing day now but thats a different topic. What do you think? |
For some reason I do not know, in the last years Sony (SIE) seem to like a lot the CES, and they do lots of videogame-related presentations there. Ironically, Sony was the first cause of the creation of E3 in 1995 (during the Pre-PSX launch in the west) to directly and OPENLY boycott the CES as the major videogame industry event in America and the world. CES in fact, knew that, and struggled in late 1994 trying to convince Nintendo and Sega to remain in the event... and failed.
So... Sony persuaded Sega and Nintendo to run away from the CES (after many editions there: CES was by then a "2 times a year" event), in favour of a new yearly based Expo in 1995, directed and managed by the videogame industry: the E3.
And E3 was a great and huge success for the public and for the media. By 1998 or even 1997, the E3 was already a very famous event for players around the world, even before the internet being massively adopted in western countries. Much more important than any other videogame Expo, including the Tokyo Game Show (still around, and by then, celebrated 2 times every year) or the long gone ECTS in Europe (last edition was in 2004, being until mid 90s another 6 months event).
E3 was also much more interesting than the old CES and much more successful, because its focus on videogames industry, made by the videogames industry, and with a show-business feel.
Eventually, CES survived (it always was more bigger than a videogames event) focussing itself in other technological fields and other domestic appliances (including electric cars in the last decade, btw) and E3 is, after more than 25 years of success, dead... basically thanks to Sony's efforts since some years ago to finish the Expo... the same Expo they basically promoted.
With all that said: I do NOT think CES is a good place anymore to do a presentation for the whole world, of a new console.
At least... since the last 30 years.
I truly preffer a simple Nintendo Direct... before getting a CES event.
And I want to be CLEAR, I hate the false live "directs". I love the live events. I wish we could get a new Space World. And I would LOVE to get a live event for the Switch 2. But man, if we have to return to practices of the "stone age" of the industry, when "videogames" was still a secundary industry included in the toys section, when adult people had no interest on them... prrfff.
