Forums - Sales Discussion - Famitsu Sales: Week 50, 2024 (Dec 09 - Dec 15)

Atlus didn't release Metaphor because they didn't want to bother with optimization for Switch when Switch 2 is around the corner

Persona 3 is also not in Switch

Both are PC releases, I don't think there is any exclusivity deal going on here

Not to mention a enchanced/definitive version is pretty much confirmed. It will launch maybe in 2026 for all platforms, like Dragon Quest did

Really surprised to see super mario maker 2 in the top 30! Has it been up there a lot recently?
Also a bit surprised BotW and TotK have been kinda absent lately, but i guess EoW is pulling the weight at the moment.

Zelda doesn't resonate with JP quite like it does with NA/EU. Plus, as you state, I think EoW might be the biggest reason for those other two not selling too hot atm. If you want a Zelda game, you’re prolly looking at the new game that released a few months ago. Especially when Nintendo has been pushing ads on EoW over BotW/TotK.

That used to be the case, but Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have done Monster Hunter level sales in Japan, which is kind of crazy.

yeah, ik BotW/TotK have been massive for Zelda in JP. What I'm saying though is despite this recent increase in JP sales figures, the franchise remains most popular outside of Japan. Compare the JP figures of BotW/TotK with all other 20mil sellers from Nintendo, and you'll see Zelda's NA/EU roots still exist.

It's so weird seeing Switch up YOY without a major release, with a relatively light first party lineup for the year, no price cut, not even aggressive bundling.
I guess the competition's just weaker now and every day new kids age into gaming and get their first system.

How a Japanese developer can take seriously the PS5 as a platform, with those numbers in its fifth Christmas season.

PS5 is a failure in Japan, sorry.

Yeah I'm confused why big Japanese developers are still making games for Playstation. It's not like they are releasing their games outside Japan

And then there is the Xbox with 1/10th the install base of Playstation, but Japanese developers still make games for Xbox. Man Japanese devs must be stupid, when they don't even release their games outside Japan.

No. they don't.

Many japanese games (apart from Nintendo ones) are never launched outside Japan.

Japanese companies develop for Japanese taste and market 90% of the time. More specially the 2nd and 3rd row companies.
Switch is starting to become the only platform they really use. Even the bigger ones, like Konami, Square Enix, Sega, Bandai Namco or Capcom only publish very limited number of games outside Japan every year, and when they do that, those also appear in PC... or they just make exclusive smartphone games. No exclusives for PS5.

Yes, they publish in Xbox some games, cause One and Series are basically a PC, like PS4 and PS5 are. Just cause that. Very easy and cheap to adapt.
But PS5 games in the japanese weekly top 30, in the fifth year of PS5, are basically residual.

So... what were you complaining about? No relevant developer (aside of Square timed exclusives) is releasing their games only on PS5, they are all multiplat and only avoid Switch when they cannot be sure Switch will run their games in an acceptable state

I just checked the list of the to 100 best selling games according to Famitsu in 2023 and I could barely find anything that didn't get a worldwide release, so please bother to elaborate which are the Japanese developers releasing games only in Japan and making them PS5 exclusive?

I don't even know if you're joking or not but those devs you mentioned, they release all their games worldwide. Most of the best selling games like tekken, street fighter , resident evil, monster hunter, sonic, Persona, Elden Ring released on xbox not on switch. None of the japanese devs besides Nintendo will ever ignore playstation or even xbox because Japan isn't the only country that sell games. It's not even the largest gaming market
