Forums - Politics Discussion - What is a "Woke" Game

Concord pretty much defined it – and we all saw how well it was accepted.

"This sounds suspiciously like white male victimhood; as if you're implying that woke ideology believes white men can't be discriminated against."

Alot of people typically that support this stuff, do voice that opinion. Theres tons of youtube videos and twitter posts saying just that.

"Why did you bother looking up the proper definition in the first place if you weren't even going to use it?"
Because you have posts above, saying everyone has their own opinion on it, and its the title of the thread.

"What game ever made even fits this description?"
Didn't Concord lack any white straight male character option? I remember people complaining about that.

"What dev makes ugly women in order to avoid the male gaze? Please cite your sources."
There's tons (online echo chambers) that think this is the right way to go.
There'ss a thread about it on resetera:
https://www.resetera.com/threads/why-women-criticise-sexualised-character-designs-ot3-make-her-look-more-corpulent-more-stuffed-where-the-eyes-cant-escape.275780/page-439

"Again, what agenda? To what end? What would furthering that agenda accomplish?"

Theres almost a hate of everything male, amoung these people.
So you see male characters emasulated, compared to say 10years ago.
You see female characters all being with a strong jawline and masculine features.... its like a trend people have noticed.
Just like how every game used to have that 1 standard white guy, every game protag looked like, now its the other way around.
Western devs started make alot of ugly looking female characters.

What aganda does it push? well.... these are the people that don't agree with "the male gaze", so they get to own the chuds.
Then post about it on twitter. They don't care, because of friend circles, and just getting new jobs.
They don't if it affects the (precieved) quality of the game or its sales.
Its mostly activist (feminists) programmers, that dislike pretty characters.... while even most female players of said games, purposefully go for beautifull character models.

"What do you mean 'instead'? Does the game not provide options for both? What's wrong with providing the option to those who appreciate it?"
I don't think the game allows you to swap your sex or character model, at the whim of a button push. So no.... it doesn't.

"Why is making and sending someone a beer can with their face on it woke? Is it only objectionable when that person is a trans influencer? Why did the right collectively lose their fucking minds over such a simple gesture?"

Why isn't it?
Who drinks the vast majority of beer? Its a guy.
For some reason, instead of appealing to men,... they did the opposite and it impacted how many guys would buy it.
The better question is, why did they go out of their way to ruin a good thing? Didn't they suspect this could piss off their customers? They didn't care.
The person in charge, thought the messaging was more important, than the customer.

"Is this referring to Veilguard? "

No its not.... KLXVER was making a exsample of where, it wouldn't make any sense to have pronouns in a game.
I quote it, and said, yes in the middle ages the term didn't exist yet.

"A meme calling people dickheads is a vicious attack, now? "

I never said it was a vicious attack (that was KLXVER)... I think its just rude to be fair.
You can disagree and start name calling people all you want.

Anyways... this is starting to feel like a "we can't discuss this rationally" off thread.
Its a bait thread.

I dont know, what about a character claiming shes non-binary in a game set in the middle ages?

"....the phrase non-binary gender was not known until 1999 and not in regular use until 2006."

Yep according to google, that term wasn't used then.

Is this referring to Veilguard? Pretty sure that game is set in a fantasy world; you know, as in not subject to the same rules as the real world. I'm pretty sure we use lots of terms and ideas today that didn't exist in medieval times, even in games about medieval times. I wonder why those anachronisms don't cause such an uproar...

Also why is it that the otherside just ignore the facts, these effects have on games... and resort to name calling?
Like we already have a person posting a picture, naming people that don't agree with him, as dickheads.

Its been like this for a while now. The people preaching about inclusion are usually the most vicious in the way they talk about other people.

Its about immersion. You cant just say "Its a fantasy world" and everything is ok. Where were all these characters and pronouns in the previous three games? Its so out of place in that series. It would be like in the next Elder Scrolls game a character pulls out an Iphone and calls in an airstrike. Is that ok? Its just fantasy, right?

Yes plz, someone elaborate on this never seen take before.

Anyway, like any linguistic short derogatory term that can be used by butching it's historical/straight up context definition, "woke" has essentially been lambasted as the default term used by a conservative ideologically aligned subset of people to represent their dislikes for the social feminist, LGBTQ+, black power movements of the 2010's unto today or anything that seem to closely resembles it.

People only care if the game is bad.  baldur's gate 3 uses Pronouns in a fantasy setting and was not used historically in forgotten realms but it had 0 effect on how much people loved that game.  Game play/writing is still king and if a game does those 2 things well you can add all the Pronouns you want into the game and the vast majority of people won't care regardless of settings.

Go check out the Official Woke Detection group on Steam. or whatever it was called.

The Democratic Nintendo fan....is that a paradox? I'm fond of one of the more conservative companies in the industry, but I vote Liberally and view myself that way 90% of the time?

Fair enough. I have not played BG3 and am surprised to not have heard any mention of pronouns in that game when people criticize other games like Starfield for the exact same thing. I guess people have more against bad writing than historically accurate settings.

Oh, I know of that cesspool. I just thought you meant of an actual polemic coming from a bunch of them.

And the criterias for them listing a game into the OWD is borderline ridicule.

These days it feels like every single game released is "woke" according to these grifters.

Fascinating video on Steam trends, especially these statistics- of all the games released in Steam in 2024, just 2.5% had the "LBGTQ+" tag and 7% had the "female protagonist" tag. This is supposedly the political trend that's overwhelming and destroying gaming.

They will keep trying to erase everyone who doesn't fit into their narrow view of how people should look and act. I try to ignore a lot of it, especially since everything is now "woke" at this point. Halo in UE is "woke" because Chief apparently looks feminine now, Space Marine 2 was "woke" for having a female commander. Dead Rising Remake was "woke" for removing the sexy photo feature, Avowed is "woke" for having pronouns, Indiana Jones was "woke" for having a strong female sidekick and one of the developers wore an LGBTQ+ shirt, Dragon Age is "woke" for a 5 minute conversation, Call of Duty is "woke" for having a non-binary operator. Now Witcher IV is "woke" because Ciri has aged and doesn't look like a teenager anymore and Naughty Dog's new game is "woke" for having a black character with a shaved head.

Lately even some of those who used to call games woke are now combating certain "woke" narratives, they'll simultaneously say that some games are apparently "woke" whilst defending the accusations of "woke" thrown to other games, doesn't that tell them that this whole thing is one big grift? The word "woke" is being thrown at everything. It is by far the most insufferable thing about gaming today, I  wish we could go back to console wars, maybe that is what happened? The console wars are dead so people need to find a new thing to make people angry about. They'll slam that woke label on practically everything except games with female characters that look like teenagers or perfectly looking no matter the context and their own personal attraction. It's a never ending pursuit of trying to find the next grift to provide them content for the next month.

A lot of gamers are being grifted by the rage baiting idiots on Twitter and YouTube who are desperate for attention and in the case of YouTube it is literally their work and unfortunately hate sells better so they'll desperately go from game to game, seeking the next "woke" game to complain about, the next imaginary enemy, so they have enough content for 20 more videos screaming about how much they hate modern gaming. Some titles I listed above didn't generate the same amount of controversy because they were titles loved by the public and that makes the grift harder to do so they'll quietly move onto the next. They will keep searching until they finally hit a bad title to "justify" their campaign or a title which simply didn't sell well and say "See, I was right!" but the truth is when you attack practically every game out there you will eventually hit one bad one.

They will make up imaginary enemies like SBI who aren't the first or only consultancy group, they are just the next target, they will stupidly claim that a consultancy group with less than 20 employees can push around billion $ corporations, they will ignore the good titles SBI has been involved in like AW2, GoW:R, SM2 and they will paint gaming journalists as the enemy, claim they are in cahoots with the "woke" but journalists scores largely match with Steam reviews on SBI titles and when journalists fall because gamers have been grifted into believing they're the enemy, all they will have left is their rage baiting Twitter users and YouTubers who will find the next thing to be angry about and blame for all of life's issues, and while gamers argue with each other, morons like Grummz and Angry YouTuber #2520 are laughing at us. Isn't it exhausting to be this bitter?

Won't be long before they're calling women's uteruses woke for producing female babies /s.
