Forums - Gaming Discussion - Game of the Year Tracker 2024

Might as well get this thead up before The Game Awards.

https://goty.gamefa.com/year/2024/

The award tracker is getting updated again and though the pool is still small currently Astro Bot is in the lead with Black Myth: Wukong close behind and Balatro in third (ahead of FF7 Rebirth, Metaphor and Helldivers on a shared 4th-6th place). Wukong has the most Reader's Choice awards which is a statistic I expect it to keep.

It's looking to be an Astro sweep this year! (My guess is >30% of all awards.) Wukong will take virtually every RC award. Metaphor will likely end up taking many of FFVIIRebirth's awards. I'm hopeful Balatro can maintain pace, though I know it'll almost certainly fall behind much more mainstream titles like Final Fantasy, Wukong, Metaphor, and HellDivers.

As far as TGA is concerned, Astro Bot looks like an obvious winner. I will be boldly confident in my prediction. The reason being that while platformers do struggle at these awards, I believe the GotY tracker speaks for itself: FFVIIRebirth and Metaphor (i.e. JRPGs…? Is that the right label im thinking of?) are struggling much harder than the cutesy platformer to gain attention. Astro is a critical darling unlike anything else on this list. Higher OC score than God of War and The Last of Us, just barely under Elden Ring…again, the winner seems obvious.

I dont think Astrobot will win GOTY at The Game Awards. It absolutely deserves it, but platformers just never win GOTY.

It Takes Two won in 2021 didn't it? I don't see how it has less of a chance than that game.

although that was a multiplatform game whereas Astro is exclusive.

Yeah, I guess. Never played It Takes Two. I thought that was more of a minigame sort of adventure.

It’s always more interesting when you’re not 100% sure how it’s gonna go. I feel like this year is going to be more like 2012 or 2021. If I had a guess probably closer to 2012 because there were a lot more of what I’d consider unconventional nominees vying for most awarded.

yeah, it was obvious Astro was gonna pull significantly ahead. I believe my prediction at the start of this forum will be spot on. :) That being said...what I'm most interested in seeing at this point is (i) whether Nintendo will recieve a single GotY win this year (they've got nothing so far), and (ii) how all the other big games will place. IGN gave GotY to Metaphor. Golden Joystick chose Helldivers 2. Polygon went to Balatro. Wukong hasn't sweeping RC quite as I had expected. (Maybe the PR blunder by the lead producer after TGA was enough to subdue a lot of motivation from the Wukong base? That's my theory at least.) It'll be an interesting sight.

After the A-Life fixes, Stalker 2 definitely got shafted when it comes to GOTY contention

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I've been looking for a tracker! Glad to find one.

Honestly surprised Astro Bot is so far ahead. I thought FF7 and Wukong would be closer. I

'll keep an eye on this, but it looks like things aren't as split as I thought they'd be.

Final Fantasy VII is getting the Lord of the Rings treatment if I had to guess. They don’t want to give it game of the year 3 separate times so it’ll get its flowers as long as they nail the landing on the final part.
