Forums - Gaming - The PSP could connect to a TV, does that make it a home console?

well I think the truth is what matters not perception, but you are free to perceive things how you want of course.

You aren't dealing with "the truth" you are dealing with definitions of words which are generally malleable (words have multiple definitions, connotation affects the tone and what people think about, words generally change in meaning through time) and we are dealing with something ambiguous and the use of a term that the Switch pretty much invented. So suggesting you are speaking the truth and mine is just "perception" just does not promote healthy discourse. We are both perceiving and in search of the truth.

It can connect to a TV, it's just a convoluted mess. I don't consider the Switch Lite a home console, btw. Just like I don't consider the PSP a home console, but I do consider the OG Switch one.

How? It has no connection to a TV, and the chip is underclocked to run only in portable mode. Even when taking apart a Switch lite, there is nowhere on the board where a connection can be made.

I think SuperJortendo is referring to a mod that was made for it to allow places like digital foundry to capture footage off of it from the TV. The capability doesn't come from the switch Lite, but an external chip that somehow connects to it.

I didn't mean to come across condescending there but when you suggested that you are in the majority with your perception, there wasn't much else I could say. The Switch has a lot of popularity on this website so you are definitely in the majority.  It just acts as a "in conclusion, Im in the majority and your not so your probably wrong" kinda thing. Not a lot else you can say to that

What makes Switch a functional home console isn't just that you can connect the device to a TV, it's that you do not lose a single feature of a Nintendo home console with it. That's why calling Switch a hybrid console is the correct way to go about it, whereas only the Switch Lite is a handheld console. Switch works well as both a home console and a handheld console, something we've never seen before.

Then you look at the PSP and can easily recognize that it absolutely does not compare favorably to the PS3. The PSP doesn't have the graphics, it doesn't have the multiplayer features, and most importantly, it doesn't even have the games. Pretty much every big Sony game was exclusive to the PS3. The PSP is merely a handheld that could connect to the TV, hence why back in the day nobody ever asked if this one feature suddenly made the PSP a home console or work akin to one.

You might as well make a thread to ask if the Super Game Boy turned Game Boy games into home console games because the SNES accessory made these games playable on a TV, because that's just as stupid as a premise as the one of this thread.

It's actually very easy to understand the difference between handheld games being played on a TV and home console games being able to be played on the go, provided you are a gamer. Just look at Switch's launch title Breath of the Wild: It clearly wasn't a handheld Zelda game.

The super Game Boy was just a SNES cartridge with a slot for Gameboy games in it. How is that even remotely comparable? A cartridge can't function alone like the PSP/Switch/Nomad/ROG ally. Truth be told though, the Super game boy is a true hybrid system. The Gameboy cartridge used the extra power of the Snes to enhance it's games. That is what proper hybrid technology looks like, and I don't know why that concept is so hard for people to grasp. The Switch dock is just a phoney piece of plastic compared to the Super Game Boy.

Well, now that was easy. Usually someone tries to keep up a pretence when they create a troll thread, but I suppose you are pretty exhausted by now.

First you say that the Super Game Boy was just an SNES cartridge and can't function alone, then right afterwards you call it a true hybrid system. At that point you either suffer from severe brain damage or you are trolling; there are no other options left. But since your mind was clear enough to dodge the main portion of my post which you can't argue against, the brain damage option can be ruled out too.

You are a troll, plain and simple.

Legend11 correctly predicted that GTA IV will outsell Super Smash Bros. Brawl. I was wrong.

If it was a troll thread it would have been banned by the mods, and I would have also been banned too. Trolling/baiting is against the terms of use for this website so if you and others feel that way just report me. You can even start a thread if you want asking if you think I should be banned, I really don't mind. I know what conduct is required for this website.

Yes, it appears that I contradicted myself, but I meant to use the word "technology" instead of "system". The gameboy cartridge is clearly not a system as it cannot function alone, but it's still way more of a hybrid technology than the Switch will ever be. The Super game Boy never tried to pass off as something it isn't like the Switch does.

24 pages in an I am still trying to work out the end aim of this discussion lol.

Is it to say Switch shouldn't be compared to PS2 sales as it's portable or is it to troll?

If we going to stretch bows at extra functions, why not stretch the PS2 to be a DVD player (so cut out some "console sales" or Sony's much higher failure rate compare to Nintendo consoles so having to buy extra units.

At the d of the day it would appear most thee gaming community have accepted it's a hybrid.

It's not a troll thread. If it was it would have been banned by now. The point was to prove how hypocritical everyone is being towards the switch and other handheld devices. The switch gets to qualify as a hybrid because it can be played on a TV, but the Sega Nomad/PSP/Steam deck/ROG ally don't. Total elitism towards one platform and total dismissal towards the others. Worst gaming hypocrisy I've seen

The PS2 games were stored on DVD's so it had to be a DVD player to function as a games console.

Hardstuck-Platinum are you still enjoying engaging with this thread?

If there is hypocrisy that needs to be pointed out then it needs pointing out. Doesn't matter if I'm enjoying it or not

I promise you there's nothing to be gained by going back & forth endlessly with people on the definition of the Switch. If you're enjoying the convo then fair game, otherwise don't let you ego trap you into wasting your energy here

I know, but I've started it now. I was already extremely unpopular even before I started this thread, so the bad reactions haven't effected me mentally so I'll just keep going. Got nothing to do with ego, but thanks for the advice.
