Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Discussion Thread -Day #36- The 15th Annual Greatest Games Event

I'm going to start doing some write-ups for my games. i think i'll skip around a bit and mainly focus on new additions to the list.

#50

Shadow of the Colossus

This is a game I only played briefly in the past. It was only this year I played it to its entirety through the PS4 version. And wow this game really stuck in my mind after finishing it. It really feels like a one of a kind experience. There isn’t a whole lot to do in the game world but fight the giant monsters known as Colossi but despite that it manages to be a very captivating experience. Where this game really excels is through its music and atmosphere which is some of the best I've experienced in any game. The story also has one of my favorite plot twists ever.

#39 Bigger than a solar system, not quite a universe

Feel like this might be Super Mario Galaxy?

Time for some more riddles:

39. The sixteenth entry in a series, but it has "Three" in the title instead.

38. A game where you stare at a map for hours, from a company with a specialty in that genre.

37. The third in a series of handheld RPG's, where a villain becomes playable.

36. The fourth entry in a series, released the same day as a more prominent spinoff.

35. A platforming icon's greatest hits, remixed for a new audience.

34. THE Crossover Video Game (no not Fortnite).

33. The Twilight of the 2D mascot platformer's dominance.

32. One of many DS era games to use the letters D & S as an acronym, this time a JRPG.

31. Something like a third of this shooter's file size was voice acting.

38: Sounds like a Paradox title, but which one? Crusader Kings, Victoria, Stellaris and Hearts of Iron all fit the description so far...

34: Super Smash Bros Ultimate?

33: Super Mario World?

Adding the next 5. Didn't think #45 was quite this obscure but oh well, here's the last chance to get it.

#45 The game that made me think boomerangs were cool (they are)

  • G'day mate!
  • An early 2000s platformer from down under
  • Not quite a tasmanian devil like this guy ↓ , but close to it

#40 Everybody knows you're only wanted as long as there are signs proclaiming it Taz: Wanted

#39 Bigger than a solar system, not quite a universe

#38 The controversial mission in this game would probably be even more controversial today Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

#37 In the story mode everything gets destroyed by a massive bomb, only there's another world inside the bomb (that's how bombs work)

#36 Three dogs, two birds, one weird green insecty thing.

#36: Sounds like Animal Crossing

#39 EVE Online?

Indeed it is!

No to both, 39 was Galaxy as guessed above.

2024 OpenCritic Prediction Leagues:

Nintendo | PlayStation | Multiplat

Current list - https://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread/248646/post-only-once-the-official-thread-the-15th-annual-greatest-games-event/4/#4

49 - Super Street Fighter II
- There could be up to 4 previously unvisited countries on your itinerary.
- England, Mexico, Jamaica, Hong Kong
- One of three iterations of a highly successful fighting game that appeared on a beloved Nintendo console.

48 - Sonic the Hedgehog (Master System)
- Those precious collectible gemstones are found in the levels here, rather than in bonus stages like in its more powerful namesake.
- This game was first available on both a home console and a handheld.
- This may well have been some people’s introduction to one of gaming’s speediest icons.

47
- Robotic animals take each other out in a title from the developer of one of the biggest franchises of all time (although the Developer was going under a different name at the time).
- You have to take control of these robotic animals to do combat, solve puzzles, and get to each level exit.
- A 3D puzzle platformer of sorts that saw release on a Nintendo console, with a poorly received port also being put out on Sony hardware.

46 (incorrect guesses - Psychonauts)
- The playable character is like the antithesis of Freddy Krueger
- A top down Zelda-like game exclusive to one of Nintendo’s rivals in the 5th gen.
- Seen by some as a spiritual successor to an isometric action RPG released for the Genesis, this game itself had a sequel which, aside from the name, had no real ties to its predecessor.

44 - Metal Gear Solid
- A character in this game may make reference to other games you play, should you give them the means to do so.

43
- Several of the multiplayer modes and control schemes in this game are references to the IP the game is part of.

#49: Street Fighter 2: The New challengers?

#44: Metal gear solid (He's reading the game saves on your memory card). Just can't remember which game in the series it was, I think 1 or 4?

Correct on both. For 49, the 4 countries is a reference to the 4 new fighters in Super Street Fighter II (Cammy from England, T Hawk from Mexico, Fei Long from Hong Kong, and Dee Jay from Jamaica)

44 is the first Metal Gear Solid, where Psycho Mantis reads your memory card data.

Yeah, and I think they remade that joke in 4 on the PS3, but it works a bit differntly since it has a hard drive instead of a memory card, hence why i wasn't sure which one you meant.

My top 50 "JRPG" list returns. Again just my subjective definition of it being Japanese and has certain RPG mechanics. 7 new entries from JRPGs played this year means 7 of the bottom feeders have been dropped. Salutes nonetheless. I still recommend you play them over most modern games today.

Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep HD PS4

Okage the Shadow King PS2

Disgaea 7 PS4

Pokemon Gold Gameboy Advance

Digimon World 3 PS1

Disgaea 3 PS3

Kingdom Hearts 3 PS4

Now to catch up very quickly I will simply name some main characters until the top 35.

50- Noctis
49- Luffy
48- Pikachu
47- Liu Bei and Mei Sanniang (Strategy)
46- Liu Bei, Sun Quan, Cao Cao (Tactics)
45- Ace
44- Andrias Rhondarson
43- Alain
42- Adel
41- Cloud
40- Lann and Reynn
39- Hagurumon
38- Luceus (Aurora)
37- Lazarel (Teresa)
36- Jack
35- Iron Mask
