I'm waiting for a release of Arcane season 1 and 2 in the same box, if we'll ever see it. I've also been looking for Lawrence of Arabia on 4K blu-ray for a long time, I heard it's a gorgeous movie.

I bought the Panasonic dp-ub820 in November, and a bunch more 4K movies along with it. I had some trouble with the player itself, it doesn't want to use Dolby Atmos sound at all, and I've had to manually adjust the sound delay on regular surround and Dolby 5.1 settings (there was significant audio delay on dialogue on all movies).

The first movies I bought in 4K format were epics and old favorites, like Gladiator, Braveheart, Norseman, etc. To my surprise, neither Troy nor Kingdom of Heaven seem to have 4K releases, which is very surprising.

Watched Dune 1 and 2 with my nephew a couple of weeks ago; he was blown away. Villeneuve's cinematography and overall style, paired with the new player, the Harman Kardon Citation 1100 system and an 85" Bravia 9, made for an epic viewing experience. In the past few years, my sensibilities have really changed regarding movies and TV, I no longer merely watch them; I experience them. Good times!

Lawrence of Arabia is already stunning on blu-ray. Great conversion from the 65mm source.

Lawrence of Arabia was shot on 65mm Eastman 50T 5250 and shown in Super Panavision 70 with an aspect ratio of 2.20:1. It's easily one of the sharpest and clearest movies ever produced, its image the very personification of filmic beauty. This is one to own on 4K, as it perfectly shows the undeniable power of 65mm film.

I would love to see it on 4K HDR (although Panavision didn't have HDR so not sure what HDR would add...) but it's CAD 115 for the box ugh. Waiting for a 'paperback' version.

The 4K HDR 'movie' that blew me away the most was Blue Planet II. Water never looked that real on TV.

Yeah, I bought Seven Worlds - One Planet with all the movies I ordered, but it was out of stock and the order was cancelled after a few months. I hear that one looks stunning as well. I'll be getting a bunch of documentaries like this on 4K disc; they have such incredible visuals, it's perhaps the best genre of film to buy in this format as far as visual fidelity and spectacle goes.

Seven worlds one planet is great. I've been collecting the whole Planet Earth series, David Attenborough is my favorite :)

You probably already have Baraka and Samsara. They don't have 4K versions, yet the blu-rays are based on 8K scans from the 70mm negatives, cleaned up and mastered in 4K before downsampled to 1080p. Those are the best looking (and sounding with 96khz encodes) blu-rays in existence and since most of the scenes are slow moving, the visual quality is amazing. Much better than the average 4K movie.
(Best sound is Akira, 192khz clean pristine soundtrack)

Awaken is another spectacle which does have a 4K version. I've never seen it and the only way to get it here is import the German version (which doesn't play here) or from Sweden on blu-ray. Frustrating!

Thanks for the tips! I'll be expanding my collection a few movies and shows at a time this year.

Around the Network

In the past I've posted images of different parts of my collection, but I've never posted the entire currently displayed collection all at once.  I do own other physical media, for example: NES games, Super NES, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Atari, and music CD's that aren't in jewel cases but contained in sleeves;, stored away in airtight bins.

I would have posted several months ago, but I had a mess.  I recently rearranged most of these and cleaned and dusted everything (it took me two weeks).  I went through every case, and any that were cracked or broken, got replaced with a new case.  I also made some custom cover art for the Godzilla collection and the Futurama collection and got rid of the giant packaging they came in.

A large portion of the collection is still wrapped in plastic, unwatched.  I increased the rate I was collecting at, at about 7 years ago to prepare for my retirement.  I was anticipating boredom in my later years and did my best to prep. What scares me is that one twilight zone episode where the end of the world happened and the lone guy that survived was a bookworm that had access to a giant library collection, only to crush his glasses and not be able to enjoy it.

The order of some the collection may seem weird, but there are reasons (too much to explain, but it makes sense to me, lol).  Example, some movies that i've already created future schedules for watching, won't be filed with their compadres until after viewing.  And there is one section at the bottom of one of the shelves that are for series that I'm unable to complete because digital streaming fucked up physical releases for them.  I still check every 3 months or so in the hopes that they've received a physical release so that they can be completed. The watched Star Trek series are in order by star-date.  My Marvels are split, some are in the Marvel timeline order.

Another goal I achieved in the rearranging process was creating space for growth.  I cancelled my Dish Network satellite service 5-6 years ago and just hooked up an over-the-air antenna. I also don't have and have never had a streaming service.  At the time I cancelled Dish, my monthly bill was around $140, so I continue to spend that same $140 a month on physical purchases instead.  I believe I should be well set already for decades of entertainment.  And many of my shows, I wouldn't mind watching over and over again.

@the-pi-guy Thanks for creating this thread, it gave me the kick in the ass I needed to clean and create some order.

My favorite movie packaging is the little black barrel at the top of one of the shelves, it's Breaking Bad.

That's one that's still wrapped in plastic.  Blu-ray version.  Now y'all got me hyped up to view it.  I have never seen it. This will be perfect to schedule for this Saturday evening's screening.  3 hours and 47 minutes! I love long epic movies.

You and Conina have such impressive displays.

I mostly have two sets of shelves that I'm too lazy to put pictures of up.

This was my justification too, but I was very bad at staying under my budget last year. A lot closer this year, but still not great.

It's also just nice because you have something after buying it, which isn't the case with streaming services/cable/satellite.

I already had about a 500 dollar budget just for purchasing media: books, games, movies, music, but just added the 140 from the cancelled satellite to it (I wasn't really clear in my post).  But lately I've scaled back and have been trying to keep it between 100-200 a month total.  I try to leave a whole bunch of movies in my saved for later section in my cart and wait for price drops to go after quantity.

I'm also guilty of exceeding my budget at times, but try to make up for it in following months.
