Xbox Live was revolutionary, and Halo was titanic... but the Dreamcast was straight-up magic. I vote Dreamcast.

100% true. Sega has been niche for decades. Literally decades.
CD was a failure
32x was a failure
Saturn was a failure
Dreamcast was a failure
I don't recall any of their portables doing much either.
Sega had one major success... the Genesis from the 90s.
Edit
Top 20 all time platforms... Sega has one... the genesis. MS has multiple.
One hit wonder.
Last edited by Chrkeller - on 01 October 2024Xbox has Halo 1+2, Fable, Forza, Morrowind, Doom 3, Half Life 2, KOTOR, Chronicles of Riddick, Jade Empire and more. So that console definitely gets the win in my eyes.
Dreamcast didn't really have midnight launches that had people going crazy waiting in line to grab a game like Microsoft did with Halo 2.

If your criteria is unit sales, then I can see your point. However, many people do not share that criteria, including me. For instance, Wii-U was my favorite console of it's gen, and it was a horrendous commercial bomb. So to me, how Sega consoles sold doesn't matter. It's how fun they were to play, what games they had to offer, and what sorts of features they brought to the table that determine their merit.

Like the DC being single analog when the world moved to double? Or like the DC having single shoulder buttons instead of double? The type S controller was far superior. The DC controller was trash.
Sales were/are important. Veronica, DoA2, etc didn't stay exclusive because of terrible sales. Skies ended up on the GC. Grandia 2 was on the ps2.
Like I said, Sega is grossly overrated. One hit wonder that people think actually competed in gaming.
Edit
Growing up my bother was a huge sega fan. We actually had a genesis+CD+32x in the house. One of the dumbest configurations I've ever seen. I got a DC at launch and it was cute, but it was no xbox, GC and certainly no ps2.
The 360 was a huge success and the One did well. The One sold more than the Genesis. Halo lives on today and is still very much relevant.
I would personally put xbox way behind Nintendo and Sony in the world of gaming. But MS is still 3rd in console impact. Which means Sega is 4th.
Sega competed that one time... and that was it.

His criteria apply to Xbox consoles as well but won't admit it. Aside from 360, they were all failures. And if poor hardware sales equate to bad developers. Halo sucks.

Xbox was made to counter Playstation, yet Xbox has lost every single time to Playstation on sales, so it failed every single time, and 3 out of 4 times it lost very, very badly.
So Xbox is a no hit wonder, right?

Xbox is ranked behind Playstation for sure. But Xbox is more successful than Sega.
Sega is also a no hit wonder, at least using your criteria. Sega lost to Nintendo every single time.
Like I said, Sega is grossly overrated. They competed that one time in that one game, nothing more.
But let us run with your criteria and game. Sega was made to compete against Nintendo. Sega has 1 console in the top 20. Nintendo has 9. The Gamecube, considered a commercial mess, sold more than any Sega hardware outside the Genesis... let that sink in. If the GC were a Sega console it would be the second best selling console for them....
Like I said, Sega is laughably overrated.
If the question were "ps2 or xbox" you are damn straight my answer would be the ps2.
Edit
I just realized the Wii U outsold the DC. The Wii U also outsold the Saturn. The GC sold more than the DC+Saturn combined.... Nintendo failures still beat Sega.
