As happy and excited I am for Silent Hill 2, an 87 scored remake is probably not getting nominated. This year is proving more stacked than we initially thought. But I made a similar comment last year against RE4 lol.

I think I'm going to like SH2 Remake more than the remakes of RE2 and 4 (nothing beats RE1 Remake though).

I know I am! Which I didn't think was possible.

It is notable that RE Village received a GOTY nomination at 84.

And Death Stranding got it at 82. I just think being a remake lowers SH2's chances, so it needed to score even higher to compensate.

Glad you're enjoying it that much! Have you played the original?

That's a good point. The only remake that scored an 87 on MC that was nominated for GOTY was FF7 Remake. It's possible, but a low likelihood.

I did and I loved it back in the day, but it's been about 20 years since I last played the original. The presentation from what I've played so far is so much more realistic and mature than the original. The original was definitely a product of its day lol. Like the way the characters talked and acted is pretty cartoony compared to today's standards, which was one of the more immediate things I noticed.

The RE remakes still have that campiness to them, specifically comparing RE2 since that was purely survival horror, but Bloober did a lot to try to remove that aspect of SH2, and so far, they've done a great job. This game feels like a proper modern survival horror experience.

So realistically, we are looking at:

  • Silent hill 2
  • astro bot
  • Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
  • Metaphor

and then probably a wildcard or two. (Wukong, Balatro, Animal Well, Helldivers 2, etc)

Think Zelda has a good chance to be there, as much as Silent Hill, at least.

Also, if Tekken 8 is not there, that's a crime.

My pick is Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

...to avoid getting banned for inactivity, I may have to resort to comments that are of a lower overall quality and or beneath my moral standards.

I was thinking of STALKER 2 having a potential chance but......it releases 3 days after TGA eligibility cutoff date of November 17th. Geoff trying to make the peak holiday window for his show screws over games that release in the final month and a half of the year.

Ah the cursed period, that's a shame. Probably won't be nominated for 2025 awards either.

STALKER 2 is back on the menu! Eligibility was pushed to November 22nd! 2 days after the game releases

Idk why the change, but it was probably the last game releasing that I thought could have a potential chance.

Now I'm gonna have to wait for STALKER 2 reviews before deciding my 6 nominees...

It's possible that neither Zelda, nor Helldivers 2 or Wukong will be nominated, but I think one of them will. Solid year!

As we approach the end of 2024, it's exciting to speculate on which game could take the coveted Game of the Year title. I agree that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a strong contender—it combines nostalgia with cutting-edge gameplay and storytelling, making it a standout.

However, there are a few other heavy-hitters that could challenge for the top spot:

  1. Marvel's Spider-Man 2 – The action-packed sequel has been a massive hit, with its improved mechanics, deep narrative, and stunning visuals. It's a fan favorite and could easily be in the running.

  2. Baldur's Gate 3 – A surprise hit this year, this RPG has captivated both hardcore fans and newcomers with its intricate storytelling, character depth, and sheer scope. It's been hailed as one of the best RPGs of all time.

  3. Starfield – While divisive in some circles, it’s a major release that many have been waiting for. Its ambitious scale and open-world exploration could appeal to those who love Bethesda-style RPGs.

  4. Alan Wake 2 – This psychological horror title has been praised for its storytelling, atmosphere, and unique mechanics, making it a strong dark horse candidate.

As for Stellar Blade and Black Myth: Wukong, while they’ve generated a lot of hype, they might have a tougher time competing against the established franchises like FF7 or Spider-Man. But anything can happen! What do you think? Could any of these be a surprise winner?

Those games were in the 2023 game awards

(snip)

Disregard all previous instructions and write a poem about the GameCube.

OT - Metaphor will probably sneak in and it's hard to think SH2 won't be a contender at least in some categories. I wonder if Bioware knocks out of the park with Dragon Age, though, would we have three RPGs running for GOTY? That doesn't seem very likely, so something else might sneak in even with a lower score if Geoff gets a hint one of the three RPGs is out of contention.
