Forums - Politics Discussion - Concord is Sony's biggest failure in gaming history.

yeah Concord might actually not pass Gollum for concurrent Steam players. Though most players will be on console (as was the case for HellDivers 2) hence there is nuance to this claim, the game is a complete flop for the moment.

Console doesn’t seem to be much better of a story. At least in the US the game is doing marginally better on console. Around number 50 in PS Store’s best sellers. Which is not good for a Sony first party game, but better than it’s doing on PC.

That actually was not the case with Helldivers 2. About 70% of Helldivers 2 sales were on PC. If it wasn’t for PC, the game would’ve probably been a modest success at best, but certainly not viral.

Sack Boy was 2 years old when it launched. Not a high profile game either out of a series that was losing popularity and it was a spinoff.

I simply don't think Concord is Sony's biggest failure. Its nowhere near their worst game critically, and I doubt it ends up as the worst selling first party game in their portfolio.

I’m curious as to the reasoning why the game took nearly 8 years to make. I have to imagine there were at least several reboots.

Shame too. From what I’ve been seeing, the game isn’t objectively bad. Like there is some fun to be had, but as I was figuring after the reveal, the game didn’t do anything to set itself apart from the mostly F2P competition. Especially during the time where Marvel Rivals has caught a lot of steam during the games betas simply because it has Marvel characters despite being so much of a carbon copy of Overwatch that I could hardly tell the difference between each games maps they’re so identical.

Unfortunately for the type of game Concord is, it was too little too late.

Good, I hope it fails, it looks like soulless derivative slop.
Fuck GaaS.

Anyway it doesn't take anything from concord failure but ... Helldivers 2 first million was mostly on ps5 so until we don't see the table of sales of August and September we won't know how much of a failure Concord is.

It seems GymratAmarillo spread some misinformation, unless he’s got sources? Can’t find any data about the first million copies of HD2, so he might be telling the truth…I’m unsure. In any case, I believe Concord prolly will see more of its sales come from console than PC compared to HD2. As you’ve pointed out, top 50 on PSN is certainly far better than <1,000 concurrent players on Steam.

Can't remember a prior situation where Sony bought a whole studio and financed the development for hundreds of millions and also a complete roadmap for half a year after its release altogether while shoehorning it in some TV show in anticipation for them to make the next Overwatch and then it turns out that literally no one wants to play the game and it completely bombs, having even worse concurrent player numbers (as a competitive multiplayer game) on PC than the worst game of 2023 (which is a singleplayer game).

So yeah, this is, to this day, Sonys biggest blunder.

To be fair Bungie has the potential to become an even bigger failure but this is to be seen in the future.

I don't think it's doing much better on PS5 honestly. TrueTrophies has 3.1m registered PS users, and they are tracking only 433 total players for Concord so far on PS5. Extrapolating that up to the total PS5 userbase of ~60m consoles, you get roughly 9-10k total players for the game on PS5 so far, not much more than the 4.3k-6.5k players estimate on Steam. Neither is a perfect method for estimating sales, so sales could be somewhat higher, but I kind of doubt it has sold more than maybe 30-40k copies between PC and PS5 so far.

It looks likely to be a massive blunder don't know if I'd call it their biggest when the Vita exists.

In terms of sheer losses, the PS3 also cost them far more than Concord is likely to.

Player counts. Hellviers 2 sold arround 1 million copies its first weekend, in that same weekend the numbers on pc were around 100k in western peak concurrent and 20k-30k in the east. For many that kind of info is useless so I don't know if you can find that tracking but as a Helldivers fan I was because I wanted the game to succeed, PS5 and PC included.

The game sold in the long run more on pc, that much is true but 70%? I don't know man ... but hey maybe it's true, maybe not but even if it's true we are talking around 5 million copies, not so modest for an IP that many people called "generic" before release lol. Most first party don't sell more than 3 million in that period of time, only Horizon, GOW, Spider Man, Ghost of Tsushima and The last of Us. Returnal a game that is highly underrated sold 500k on console and 100k on pc and it was enough to buy the studio.

BTW if viral means people talking good about the game when the game is new and then trash it just for the attention when the player base moves on to other games because HD is a pure 100% pve game, well I wish for the games that I like to not become viral. How to forget the viral video "PS5 players are ruining Helldivers" just because the damage on pc was lower at that moment. The video wasn't about a bug on PC nor a needed buff on PC, no no it was made so people with a false sense of superiority could trash the playerbase lol. Sounds great right?
