Forums - Sony Discussion - Will the PS5 be able to sell more than the PS4?

I don’t think so for several major reasons

1) The consoles continue to go up in price worldwide in a time where cost of living is ridiculous so gaming has gone from a luxury to a major luxury for most.

2) Sony themselves believe the PS5 peaked in sales this past year, so it will most likely never reach those sales numbers again.

3) Pro consoles don’t move units dramatically enough to make an impact. Just look at PS4 Pro sales. They’re enthusiast devices. Not for the masses. I can’t imagine what the price is going to be, which coincides with my first point.

4) Now that Sony is releasing all their games on PC, it’s going to lead some to hold off on getting a PS5 to wait for a game to arrive on PC. Nearly all of Sony’s major first titles this gen are on PC minus GT7, Demon’s Souls, and Spider-Man 2.

I think it has a great chance of still hitting 100 million lifetime in sales though!

IIRC, PS4 Pro sales accounted for about 10% of the PS4's install base. PS5 Pro should end up in a similar ballpark, and perhaps even slightly better, without an Xbox equivalent on the market.

The only possibility is if the PS6 doesn't come along for many years. This is actually a likely as the PS5 is reasonably powerful and will be perfectly capable of running the next 10 years' worth of games.

So maybe there's another 7-8 years of PS5 to go...

GTA6 will chagange evrything.

It will depend on how the non traditional markets will be doing in the future. I mean markets other then Japan, US and Europe. The traditional markets are quite stale at best.

Let's imagine a market like China would fully open to adopt PS5 somehow, due to a change in government regulations for instance. Given the massive population, their middle class is easily as big as lets say the US, to being to afford one.

Can't believe some here thinks it would only sell 100m. How is that even possible? PS5 will be around 70m by end of the year. PS6 most likely will not launch until 2027 earliest . Only 30m for the next 3 years? I think it will be very close to PS4 and could beat it. At least 35m in 2025 and 2026 because of GTA 6 and PS5 pro. 10m in 2027 and that's when I think PS5 launch end of 2027. Maybe it could sell another 3-4m after PS6 release and beat the PS4 but if PS6 launch in 2028 then it will surely reach 120m

I have not paid much attention to this gen, but what I do remember is that huge blunder Sony had with the PS5. I was not really aware of why it happens or do not remember the reason.

But it does seem that that hurt it alot. Are there a lot of big games still coming for it?

I think the majority here are very pessimistic about the PS5. Don't forget that we have the biggest game of all time GTA 6. We still have several great games to be released wolverine, ghost of tsushima 2, the next resident evil, monster hunter.

I think consoles are just out of reach for lower socio-economic households these days... Which is sad, because consoles were seen as the cheaper entertainment option verses PC... And they appealed to the student/teenager who has limited income.

In saying that, the Series S hasn't been lighting the sales charts on fire either and that's lower priced.

So it's likely a combination of issues holding things back currently, there is simply no excitement.

It will.
PS5 Pro, GTA 6, Ghost 2, Naughty dog game, Santa Monica game and Price cuts.

With an extra year before the successor, ps6 in 2028, yeah it will do it. It was only 0.7m behind in shipments in March 2024 and is only forecast to be 1.7m behind by March 2025. With no successor till 2028 PS5 should sell over 120m.

Something like this:

PS5 PS4
FY Sales LTD FY Sales LTD
FY4 (March 2017/2024) 20.8m 59.3m 20m 60m
FY5 (March 2018/2025) 18m 77.3m 19m 79m
FY6 (March 2019/2026) 16.3m 93.3m 17.8m 96.8m
FY7 (March 2020/2027) 12.5m 105.8m 13.6m 110.4m
FY8 (March 2021/2028) 10m 114.8m 5.8m 116.2m
FY9 (March 2022/2029) 4.5m 119.3m 1m 117.2m

Selling notably worse than the PS4 launch aligned for the next 3 fiscal years and then regaining all that lost ground because the PS5 comes out and hurts the PS4 sales while the PS5 continues on for another year. PS5 would really need to plummet to not beat the PS4 with a 2028 PS6 which is the data all previous rumours have said.
