Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom out now on Switch

(Mild second half game spoilers)

Just reached Hebra Mountain where it gets too cold to proceed unprotected. I was going to go away and make a bunch of cold resistance potions, when I remembered that in BOTW/TOTK carrying a fire weapon would act as a heat source and protect from low temperatures. So I spawned an Ignizol, and sure enough, by carrying it around I was kept warm against the blizzard.

I love these cool little moments of attention to detail, things most games wouldn't have thought to include, but which make logical sense. These were some of my favourite parts of BOTW/TOTK and I love it here too.

After Gerudo, Zora, Faron and Eldin...there are enjoyable tidbits in there, and actually potentially good core concept...but...I already can't remember any of the main dungeons (though I just played Faron and Eldin this weekend) - they are not intrinsically bad, but nothing is really memorable about them. Combat remains piss easy (actually, it got even easier) and traversal is as trivial as it was.

There are glimpses of proper 2D Zelda in there, but in this form, no, it's just not it.

That is my biggest complaint, the dungeons are super generic.  I haven't played Skwyard for years and still can remember many of the dungeons.  I beat Wisdom a few days ago and can't recall anything of note.

Yeah, dungeons are very forgettable. And I expect them to keep on being forgettable in future Zelda titles, if this is the course they're steering that ship toward.

It is both funny and sad that the best thing that Aonuma's Zeldas had going for themselves for so long, dungeons, is now being done so mediocre.

Okay finally back to this one after getting sidetracked for a bit by other releases.

Finished Lanaryu Temple and it was another terrific dungeon; designing it around manipulating temperature to freeze/thaw different rooms was a cool (heh) concept and the music/vibes were on point.
The art style has also really grown on me and I think it's now one of my favourite looks for the series.

Finished with all three of the goddess temples now; only the endgame left. So far it's an 8/10 from me, but we'll see how the finale plays out.

I finally finished it this weekend - I didn't find end boss to be as disappointing as people tend to say, but it was nothing great either.

There is part toward the end that really reignited my hope for potential LEGO Zelda and coop play - not that you actually get to play like in LEGO games, but I could see the potential there.

In the end, I remain at 6/10 - it is descent experience, but nothing more than that. And certainly not worth $60, that actual proper AAA Zelda (no matter what I think of BotW) cost.

It got the Nintendo bump in scores to be sure, there's a lot of disappointed people in my youtube feed.

EoW is a very comfortable 9/10 for me. Really enjoyed it. Reminds me a lot of BotW/TotK. :)

tbf I can’t think of many games which aren’t met by the vocal minority of disappointed.

Yeah but these are Zelda hardcores. I bet this game would have been met with more praise had they let Zelda weild a sword at some point (not just a CD) and had a better UI for getting to what you need to conjure quicker. Those are the two main points everyone hates aswell as the dungeons but the dungeons would be improved by adding those two things.

doesn't matter how "hardcore" they may be, esp when this game chooses such a radically different take on the gameplay loop (hence, "hardcore" backlash isn't anything too shocking). Again, the disappointed tend to be the most vocal: TotK, Mario Wonder, TTYD, GoW:R, SM2, HFW, BG3, FFVIIReBirth, Dragon's Dogma 2, Helldivers 2, etc., demonstrate this vocal minority concept all too well. And while the only social media platform I use it VGChartz (with maybe ten minutes devouted to glancing at Twitter), I can't say I've seen too much disappointment among the ppl I follow, though it certainly is an instance of you either love it or hate it. There's an agreed upon consensus that the UI is a mess (as it was in TotK), but all-in-all, the ppl who do enjoy the game (which is a heavy majority) have been gushing over it.

Getting back to your original comment: I don't agree with your theory of this "Nintendo bump" on Zelda EoW, especially when it's review score places it below all mainline 2D and 3D Zelda games, as well puts it below even top 20 top rated games of the year. It certainly is a game worthy of its acclaim, even if it lacks that same Zelda polish we all have come to know. Also, I don't understand why you've been so insistent in asserting Zelda EoW as being a disappointment? I feel like we already had this discussion, and it was literally on the same day the game launched...? Not sure why you want to believe the game is bad lol, just seems like unneeded negativity.

Yeah, I surrrpose ya can't gleam the games popularity off of a few and indeed it is always the hardcore that tend to hate new ideas. How do you think it would have reviewed if it wasn't a zelda game though?
