He has been Hitler-esque for a while, the only difference is Israel isn't as powerful as Germany was.

War-torn Lebanon forms its first government in 2 years

Lebanon’s new prime minister has formed the country’s first full-fledged government since 2022.

President Joseph Aoun announced in a statement that he accepted the resignation of the former caretaker government and signed a decree with new Prime Minister Nawaf Salam forming the new government.

Salam’s cabinet of 24 ministers, split evenly between Christian and Muslim sects, was formed less than a month after he was appointed, and comes at a time when Lebanon is scrambling to rebuild its war-battered southern region and maintain security along its southern border after a devastating war between Israel and Hezbollah.

A US-brokered ceasefire deal ended the war in November. Though Hezbollah did not endorse Salam as prime minister, the Lebanese group did engage in negotiations with the new prime minister over the Shia Muslim seats in government, as per Lebanon’s power-sharing system.

Israeli army says it struck Hamas weapons depot in Syria

A military statement says a Hamas weapons cache in the Deir Ali area in southern Syria has been bombed by Israeli jets.

The army claimed Hamas and other Palestinian groups are “exploiting Syrian soil to establish Iranian-directed terrorist activity”.

“The [military] will continue to strike the Hamas terrorist organisation wherever it tries to establish itself and will act against all attempts by terrorist organisations to establish themselves and strengthen themselves in order to prevent a threat to the security of the State of Israel,” the army said.

There was no comment from Syrian authorities or Hamas on the Israeli claim.

Egypt slams Israeli suggestions to establish Palestinian state on Saudi territory

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry has released a statement condemning as “irresponsible” statements by Israeli officials that suggested establishing a Palestinian state on Saudi Arabia’s territory.

The ministry considered the suggestion a “direct infringement of Saudi sovereignty”, adding that the kingdom’s security was a “red line for Egypt”.

PLO official slams call to establish Palestinian state in Saudi Arabia

Hussein al-Sheikh, secretary-general of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), says Israel is targeting “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and its sovereignty” after its prime minister suggested Riyadh establish a state of Palestine on its territory.

He described the call as “a violation of international law and international conventions”.

“We affirm that the State of Palestine will only be on the land of Palestine, and we appreciate the positions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, its leadership and people, which always call for the implementation of international legitimacy and international law,” al-Sheikh said.

In an interview with Israel’s Channel 14, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the establishment of a Palestinian state in Palestinian territory in exchange for normalisation of ties with Saudi Arabia.

“The Saudis can create a Palestinian state in Saudi Arabia. They have a lot of land over there,” he was quoted as saying.

Hamas says group doing ‘maximum’ to give Gaza ceasefire deal chance to succeed

Basem Naim, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, has told Al Jazeera from Istanbul that Israel keeps playing “dirty games” to undermine the ceasefire deal.

He said the group warned the mediators, including the US, that the Israeli violations – the delays in aid deliveries as well as killing Palestinians in Gaza – could threaten the agreement.

“From day one, our goal was how to stop this aggression, how to prevent the war against our people again and again, therefore we have discussed with the mediators that we are ready to overcome any problems, any obstacles, any challenges in order to give this deal a chance to succeed,” Naim said.

But he warned that “if Israelis insist on violations” this could prompt the collapse of the accord.

“We still have a lot of cards in our hands to respond [to Israel’s violations]. We can postpone the handover of prisoners. We are doing the maximum in cooperation with the mediators to avoid all these obstacles,” Naim added.

Trump’s proposal a clear call for ethnic cleansing: Hamas official

We have more from our interview with top Hamas official Basem Naim.

Asked to comment on US President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to forcibly displace the Palestinians in Gaza, Naim said this was “a crime against humanity” and “a clear call for ethnic cleansing”.

The member of Hamas’s political bureau said Trump’s proposal should be condemned “very strongly and decisively from everyone – from Arabs, Muslims, and the international community”.

Naim stressed it is the Palestinians who will decide for themselves where and how to live.

“If a Palestinian decides to live in a tent above the rubble of his house, this is his decision,” he added. “We didn’t ask Trump or anyone to decide for us where to live and how to live.”

Naim also said Palestinians have a lot of experience from Israel’s past wars on Gaza in how to rebuild destroyed houses and neighbourhoods while the population remains in the territory.

After captives’ release, Israel supposed to withdraw from Netzarim Corridor

As per the ceasefire agreement, after today’s captives for prisoners release, the Israeli military is supposed to withdraw completely from the Netzarim Corridor and allow free movement back and forth between the southern and northern parts of the Gaza Strip.

The Netzarim Corridor has been controlled by the Israeli military since the beginning of the war, impeding movement from the south to the north.

Right now, people have to be very careful when they move in the area. Everything has been very unpredictable in the past few weeks since the beginning of the ceasefire.

We have seen two vehicles struck by the Israeli military on al-Rashid Street.

Israel’s policy of blocking much-needed Gaza aid continues

By not allowing much of the needed aid – particularly, tents and shelters – into Gaza, Israel might be trying to provoke Hamas to a response, according to Mohamad Elmasry, a professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies.

He said Israel’s intention in the war was “to render the Gaza Strip completely unliveable because they wanted to depopulate” the enclave.

“They have been preventing the essential humanitarian aid from the start – they promised to do that and they did it,” the academic stressed.

Elmasry reminded that this was even confirmed in a report after an investigation by the US government’s USAID last year.

“I don’t think we should necessarily be terribly surprised with these developments,” he concluded.

USAID now closed down, coincidence?

Two children killed, one injured in Gaza City: Official

Salama Maarouf, the head of Gaza’s Government Media Office, says two girls have been killed and a third child injured from the same family in Gaza City as a result of the collapse of a concrete wall from a house bombed by Israeli aircraft.

Heavy equipment and machinery must be brought in quickly, fuel must be provided, and specialised technical crews must be allowed to arrive to deal with the rubble and debris and inspect partially destroyed homes, he was quoted as saying by the Palestinian Information Center.

Another 572 deaths confirmed in Gaza: Health Ministry

The Health Ministry in Gaza has just released its latest report on the number of people who were killed and wounded by Israel’s war on the territory.

In a statement, it said a total of 26 fatalities – four newly killed, 22 body recoveries – and five wounded people had arrived in hospitals during the past 48 hours.

It added that 572 deaths were added to the overall number of people killed in Israeli attacks after their data was verified by the judicial committee following up on the file of reports and missing persons.

As a result, the confirmed number of people killed in Israeli attacks since October 7 has risen to at least 48,181, with 111,638 others wounded.

A number of victims still remain under the rubble, while the Government Media Office in Gaza has put the death toll to at least 61,709 people, saying thousands of people who were missing under the rubble are now presumed dead.

Hamas releases three Israeli captives

Eli Sharabi, 52, Or Levy, 34, and Ohad Ben Ami, 56, have been freed from a location in Deir-el Balah in central Gaza as part of the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas.

Who are the freed Israeli captives?

Eli Sharabi, Ohad Ben Ami and Or Levy have been released by Hamas in central Gaza’s Deir el-Balah.

Here is some information about who they are:

  • Fifty-two-year-old Eli Sharabi was taken from the Be’eri settlement in Israel on October 7, 2023 with his brother, Yossi, whose death has been confirmed by Israel since then. Sharabi’s wife and two daughters, who were teenagers, were killed during the Hamas-led attack.
  • Ohad Ben Ami, 56, was also taken in Be’eri with his wife, Raz. She was freed as part of the Hamas-Israel deal in November 2023. Ben Ami worked as an accountant.
  • Or Levy, 34, a computer programmer from the city of Rishon LeZion, was attending the Nova music festival on October 7 with his 32-year-old wife, Eynav, when fighters attacked the event. Eynav was killed and Or was abducted. Their two-year-old son was not present.

Released Israeli captives reunited with relatives

The three Israelis released have been reunited with family members on Israeli soil.

“It’s over, it’s over,” Or Levy’s brother said as they embraced at a military base where the captives first crossed over from Gaza. Levy’s parents then joined them in a tearful embrace.

Levy’s wife was killed in the October 7 attack and their 3-year-old son has been in the care of relatives since.

Ella Ben Ami, daughter of released abductee Ohad Ben Ami, told Israeli channel 12 she could barely recognise her father when she saw him in the live footage of his release after 16 months of captivity.

“I have to say that it was a really difficult few moments, to say the least. He was emaciated and his bones were protruding. It took me a moment to realise this was my father.”

Ella and her sisters, Yulie and Natalie, spoke with their father as he was checked over at a hospital. “You’re the strongest in the world!” Ella told him, according to footage released by the prime minister’s office.

Israel PM says images of freed Gaza captives ‘shocking’

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says the images of three freed captives in Gaza are “shocking”.

“The shocking images that we have seen today will not go unaddressed,” the prime minister’s office said in a statement after Hamas fighters brought the three pale-looking captives onto a stage.

Before a crowd of hundreds of people, Hamas fighters pointed a microphone at each of the three men in turn and made them make a public statement, before handing them over to waiting Red Cross officials. It was the first time that captives freed during this phase of the ceasefire have been made to make public statements during their release.

Hours before the release, dozens of masked and armed Hamas fighters – some driving white pick-up trucks with guns mounted – lined up at the location of the exchange near the territory’s main north-south highway in central Gaza.

This was the fifth swap of captives for prisoners since the ceasefire began on January 19.

Herzog says condition of freed captives a ‘crime against humanity’

The Israeli president has made a statement about the release of the three Israeli captives, who appeared gaunt.

“This is what a crime against humanity looks like!” he said on X.

“The whole world must look directly at Ohad, Or, and Eli – returning after 491 days of hell, starved, emaciated and pained – being exploited in a cynical and cruel spectacle by vile murderers. We take solace in the fact that they are being returned alive to the arms of their loved ones,” Herzog added.

Throughout the war, Israel was repeatedly accused by humanitarian agencies of systematically hindering aid to Gaza, including food and medicine for people under siege amid famine-like conditions.

Last year, Refugees International said Israel “consistently and groundlessly impeded aid operations within Gaza, blocked legitimate relief operations and resisted implementing measures that would genuinely enhance the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza”.

‘Why didn’t you act earlier?’ Israeli opposition leader asks PM

Israel’s main opposition leader Yair Lapid has challenged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on his reaction to the physical conditions of the three released captives who looked frail.

“Netanyahu, you just discovered that the situation of the hostages is dire? Didn’t you know that before?” Lapid said on X.

“Because it was written in the intelligence documents that were placed on your desk in recent months. You saw these reports just like I did. What does it help them now that you ‘ordered to take action’? And if there are actions, why didn’t you order them earlier?”

Reports says Israel may reduce aid to Gaza over health of released captives

According to media reports in Israel, there is some consideration of reducing the amount of humanitarian aid allowed into Gaza in response to the apparent weight loss suffered by the three released captives.

There may also possibly be a demand for proof of life and the health status of the remaining captives who are alive.

But the leader of the opposition in Israel, Yair Lapid, told Netanyahu that he doesn’t buy this manufactured shock, as Netanyahu was aware from intelligence services reports that the status of Israeli captives was very dire.

Since Israel was denying the entry of food to Gaza, the captives were also suffering.

They were also going hungry, just as the population in Gaza was going hungry.

‘These captives could have been home looking much, much better’

Israeli political commentator Ori Goldberg says despite the “vigorous denial” by Prime Minister Netanyahu and the majority of Israeli society, the poor physical condition of the three freed captives is a direct result of the punishing 15-month war on Gaza.

“It’s very obvious the condition of the Israeli prisoners released has much to do with the situation in Gaza, which is to a major extent Israel’s responsibility,” Goldberg told Al Jazeera.

“The more you hear expressions of outrage over Hamas’s ‘horrific’ treatment of the prisoners, it gets more and more clear that Israelis are fully aware that had Israel not insisted on applying ‘military pressure’ for so many months, these captives and any others could have been home looking much, much better.”

He said most Israelis don’t see the release of 183 Palestinian prisoners as capitulation, but instead it “reinforces their sense of superiority”.

“One-hundred and eighty-three Palestinian prisoners are easily worth three of ours. You also have to remember the general dehumanisation of Palestinians in Israeli society. Israelis don’t care. Palestinians do not exist as full-sized human beings.”

Who are the Palestinian prisoners due to be released by Israel?

As we have reported earlier based on the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office, Israel is due to release 183 Palestinian inmates from its prisons.

They will include 18 prisoners serving life sentences, 54 others with long-term sentences and 111 Palestinians from Gaza who were detained after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack on southern Israel.

All are men, ranging between the ages of 20 and 61.

Israeli military continues raids on homes of Palestinian prisoners set for release

As we have been reporting, the Israeli military has been carrying out raids across the occupied West Bank tonight on the family homes of Palestinians set for release as part of the fifth prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas.

The Palestinian Information Center now reports that the family homes of five Palestinian prisoners slated for release this morning have also been raided in the village of Deir Nidham, northwest of Ramallah.

Israeli forces also arrested “dozens” of Palestinians in the city of Qalqilya on Friday night, according to the same outlet.

The Israeli forces have stormed the home of Fatah Revolutionary Council member Fakhri Barghouti in the village of Kobar, north of Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Media Office.

Barghouti, 70, was severely beaten and warned not to hold any celebratory events to mark the release of his son, Shadi, from an Israeli prison later today, the statement on Telegram said.

Israeli army detains two Palestinians in occupied West Bank’s Jenin

Our Al Jazeera Arabic colleagues, quoting Palestinian sources, report that two brothers were detained by Israeli forces in the town of Yammun, west of the city of Jenin. As we previously reported, the Israeli forces placed several houses under siege in the town overnight.
