US police arrest 200 for protesting against Netanyahu
As we have previously reported, a number of people have been arrested at a US Congress building for protesting against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s scheduled address to lawmakers on Wednesday.
The US Capitol Police now says the number of detained demonstrators is 200.
“Demonstrating inside the Congressional Building is against the law,” read a statement.
The Cannon Rotunda is now clear of demonstrators. We will provide number of arrests tonight when we get the final number.

Earlier today, Al Jazeera spoke to Sonya Meyerson-Knox, the communications director of the Jewish Voice for Peace, whose members staged a protest inside a congressional building against Netanyahu addressing Congress later today. At least 200 protesters were arrested, the Capitol Police said.
“We need a weapons embargo, we need an end to US funding and sending weapons to the Israeli military, we need a ceasefire and the only way to get that is through a permanent arms embargo that will ensure that our weapons are not being used to commit a genocide,” Meyerson-Knox said.
Who is boycotting Netanyahu address to Congress?
There will be empty seats in the Capitol as Netanyahu will address the Congress amid growing criticism over his war conduct in Gaza.
The boycott is a sign of dissatisfaction, particularly among progressive Democrats, over the US’s unwavering support of Israel – a cause that has traditionally rallied bipartisan support among Americans.
So who is going to be missing? Here are a few names:
- Kamala Harris, the most high-profile Democrat, said she won’t attend due to another event.
- New York’s Democrat Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Alexandra said she would boycott the address of “a war criminal”, adding it’s “a sad day in US history when an authoritarian with warrant requests” from the International Criminal Court is allowed to address Congress.
- Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib said it’s “utterly disgraceful that leaders from both parties have invited him to address Congress”, also mentioning that Netanyahu should have been arrested and sent to the ICC.
- Ilhan Omar of Minnesota said she would not be present and gave her guest tickets to a family member of a captive.
- Washington Representative Pramila Jayapal told AP it was a “bad idea” to invite Netanyahu.
Netanyahu ‘hosted in Congress while we’re being slaughtered’
Speaking from besieged Khan Younis, Kazem Abu Taha, a displaced Palestinian from southern Rafah, expressed incredulity as the Israeli prime minister prepares to address the US Congress later today.
“Netanyahu is embraced by the Americans. He is being provided with food and drinks. He is being hosted in Congress while we are being slaughtered. Where should we go? Where are the Arab nations? Where are the Arab people? Where are the people who have morals in the European nations who welcome this monster who kills,” said Abu Taha.
“The United States is a main partner in what is happening in Gaza. We are being killed because of the United States. We are being slaughtered by American planes, American ships, American tanks… Everything that we are being killed with is American. [President] Biden blesses any operation and any killing and any massacre."
