A dark backdrop to Netanyahu’s US visit
The Israeli prime minister is set to speak to Congress. But several issues are marring his trip with protests planned in Washington, DC, as the Israeli war on Gaza continues for a ninth month.
- Israel is accused of carrying out war crimes in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. The International Court of Justice has ruled Israel might be guilty of genocide. Last week, the ICJ also said Israel’s 57-year-old military occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza is illegal.
- The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court has requested a warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest for war crimes and crimes against humanity Israel is committing in Gaza.
- The US government has been accused of aiding Israel’s war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. Since October, it has provided Israel with billions of dollars in weaponry and vetoed three UN ceasefire resolutions.
- Netanyahu has for years undermined US policy and destroyed the possibility of a Palestinian state being created as part of the “two-state solution” by massively expanding illegal Israeli settlements on occupied Palestinian land, making the creation of a geographically contiguous Palestinian state impossible.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu emphasized the importance of close ties between the US and Israel in an address to Congress on Wednesday that sought to shore up American support for Israel’s ongoing war against Hamas in Gaza.
“For the forces of civilization to triumph, America and Israel must stand together,” Netanyahu said to loud cheers from lawmakers in attendance. “Because when we stand together, something very simple happens: We win, they lose.”
“We meet today at a crossroads of history. Our world is in upheaval,” Netanyahu said.
Yes and you are one of the main causes.
Israel’s Netanyahu in the US
This would be his fourth address to the US Congress — the most ever by any other foreign leader. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill addressed Congress three times.
More than 100 US Congress interns boycotting Netanyahu’s address
The interns have said they are boycotting Netanyahu’s address today, citing constituent demands.
“As the backbone of the nation’s democratic institutions, we are entrusted with amplifying the voices of constituents. The overwhelming demand is clear: Prime Minister Netanyahu must be held accountable for his crimes against humanity. It is our moral obligation to ensure these voices are not silenced,” the group of interns said in a statement.
“In an act of protest, many of us have pledged to call in sick today. We stand in full solidarity with the victims of Netanyahu’s actions.”
Thousands of Israelis continue to protest, demaning a deal with Hamas
Thousands of Israelis participated in a march that began in the city of Tel Aviv and reached the American embassy to demand that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announce his agreement to conclude a deal with Hamas in his speech before US Congress, which is currently ongoing.
Simultaneously, thousands more Israelis participated in demonstrations in the center of the city. The families of the Israeli captives held in Gaza announced that Netanyahu’s speech would be broadcast to the demonstrators so that a response could be delivered in real-time.
