Israeli forces kill 4 Palestinians in Kafr Ni’ma, near Ramallah

We reported earlier about an incident where Israeli forces fired at a car near the village of Kafr Ni’ma, in the occupied West Bank, which resulted in several injuries.

Following the incident, troops raided the village and killed four Palestinians, and injured at least eight, according to the ministry of health.

Palestinian factions said that the city of Ramallah and its nearby villages will observe a general strike tomorrow – including schools and businesses – to protests the killings in Kafr Ni’ma.

EU welcomes UN Security Council ceasefire resolution

The European Union in a statement called for the “immediate implementation” of the UN Security Council resolution for a Gaza truce.

“The EU recalls its full support to the comprehensive roadmap presented by United States President Joe Biden. We urge both parties to accept and implement the three-phase proposal,” it said.

“The EU stands ready to contribute to reviving a political process for a lasting and sustainable peace, based on the two-state solution, and to support a coordinated international effort to rebuild Gaza.”

Belgium calls for ‘immediate’ implementation of truce resolution

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hadja Lahbib says the passing of the UN Security Council ceasefire resolution is a “crucial step” towards peace. “Belgium calls for the immediate implementation of the ceasefire. It’s urgent,” she said.

Palestinian Authority presidency backs immediate ceasefire

Palestinian presidential spokesperson Nabil Abu Rudeineh says the PA supports any resolution that calls for an immediate truce in Gaza and preserves Palestine’s land unity.

Abu Rudeineh’s comments came in response to the latest UN Security Council resolution backing a plan for a ceasefire in Gaza.

Palestine envoy says UNSC resolution ‘step in right direction’

The Palestinian leadership welcomed the passing of the US-sponsored resolution calling for an immediate and permanent truce in Gaza.

“This effort … is a step in the right direction. We are grateful for our brothers in Algeria, whom we worked with very closely to try to influence the draft resolution to be closer to the objectives of the national rights of the Palestinian people,” said Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations.

Russia says it’s unsure of Israeli position on ceasefire deal

Moscow was the only member of the UN Security Council’s 15-member states and the only permanent representative to abstain on the US-promoted ceasefire plan.

Russia’s UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia asked what Israel specifically agreed to and said the council should not be signing up to agreements with “vague parameters”.

“We did not wish to block the resolution simply because it, as much as we understand, is supported by the Arab world,” Nebenzia told the council.

Israeli government won’t be happy with UN vote: Ex-official

“I don’t think Israel’s government will not be happy to hear the result about the UN Security Council’s vote. I think the Israeli government is taken by surprise,” Alon Liel, former director of Israel’s foreign ministry, told Al Jazeera.

Liel said most analysts predicted Russia would veto the US-proposed resolution at the UN Security Council calling for an immediate Gaza ceasefire. “I think there will be a very hectic morning discussing it tomorrow,” he said.

Liel added that the key country to pressure Israel to implement the UN’s ceasefire resolution is not the United States, but Egypt. “Egypt is now in a position to put enormous pressure on Israel to end the war. The war every day is coming closer to the Egyptian border, deeper into Rafah, with refugees going into Egypt,” said Liel.

‘Press Hamas,’ reiterates Antony Blinken

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken says all governments in the Middle East should press Hamas to say “yes” to the ceasefire with Israel.

“If you want to alleviate the terrible suffering in Gaza, to get all the hostages home, to put Israelis and Palestinians on the path to durable peace — then press Hamas to say yes to the ceasefire,” he said.

Hamas released a statement welcoming the United Nations resolution shortly after it passed, and said it’s ready to work with mediators to implement it.

You need to press Israel but whatever.

The US will have to withhold weapon shipments and place sanctions by the looks of it. Israel is still incapable of looking in the mirror.

Israel committed to its goals to see war through, says envoy

Israel is committed to its goals of freeing captives held in Gaza, destroying Hamas’s governing and military capabilities, and ensuring Gaza doesn’t pose a threat to Israel in the future, says UN representative Reut Shapir Ben Naftaly.

She made the comments after the UN Security Council unanimously voted for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. All Hamas needs to do to stop the war is put done its weapons and surrender, she added.

“Once these goals are met, the war will end. Not one more shot needs to be fired yet, sadly, for the past eight months, Hamas has refused,” she said.

“Israel will not engage in meaningless and endless negotiations, which can be exploited by Hamas as a means to stall for time,” said Ben Naftaly, the political coordinator for Israel’s mission to the UN.

“The time has come for this council to finally hold Hamas accountable, to finally place the blame where it belongs, to finally condemn terror.”

"Burden is on the Israeli side" to implement UN-backed ceasefire deal, Palestinian ambassador to UN says

The Palestinian Authority welcomes the resolution approved by the United Nations Security Council on Monday, but it is in Israel’s hands to implement it, Palestinian UN envoy Riyad Mansour said.

The resolution is a “step in the right direction” and welcomed by “all Palestinians,” Mansour said.

“We want a ceasefire”, he said, adding the “burden is on the Israeli side to implement this resolution and to have the ceasefire immediately in place and have the exchange of Palestinian prisoners and make this ceasefire a permanent ceasefire.”

The UN resolution says Israel has accepted the proposal.

Regarding the possibility of Hamas accepting or rejecting the deal, the Palestinian official said he “did not hear any Palestinian [say] anything but to welcome this resolution.”

US veto came with ‘an extremely heavy price’: Amnesty chief

Agnes Callamard, the head of human rights group Amnesty International, urged all parties to the conflict to implement the UN Security Council’s Gaza ceasefire resolution.

“The US had previously blocked multiple ceasefire resolutions, including by using its veto three times. Its shift is long overdue. With more than 37,000 Palestinians dead, amid a risk of genocide and an engineered famine, its stalling has come at an extremely heavy price,” Callamard said.

“The US must now use its influence to ensure this ceasefire becomes a reality. It must halt arms transfers to Israel and ensure that Israeli authorities allow unfettered humanitarian aid access throughout Gaza.”

To be fair, the UNSC passed an immediate ceasefire resolution at the start of Ramadan. But without US support, or rather with continued US support for Israel it went completely ignored. And as Agnes Callamard said, it's now up to the US to pressure Israel into making this ceasefire a reality.

UN blames carnage from deadly Israeli raid for aid disruption

The UN World Food Programme earlier suspended aid deliveries to Gaza via a temporary US military pier to “assess the security situation”.

Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for UN chief Antonio Guterres, linked the move to the Israeli assault that freed four captives. In the attack, 274 Palestinians were killed and 700 wounded, including many women and children.

“World Food Programme colleagues tell us that we are temporarily pausing operations at the floating dock until a thorough assessment of the security situation is conducted to ensure the safety of our staff and our partners,” said Dujarric.

“We’ve all seen what happened in Gaza over the weekend. We’ve seen some of the media reports. We’ve also taken note of very public statements by the US Central Command that the floating pier had not been used in the operation by the Israeli forces regarding the hostages,” he added.

“I think it’s only normal after such an operation takes place with such a large number of victims, that our humanitarian colleagues take a pause [and] look at the situation. And hopefully, it can be returned to use as quickly as possible from our end.”

‘No time to waste’ on truce deal as famine stalks Gaza population

Global charity Mercy Corp says now that the UN Security Council approved the ceasefire resolution, it must be “implemented fully and immediately” to save lives.

“There is no time to waste when over half of the population is on the verge of starving to death, and the rest facing catastrophic hunger,” said Kate Phillips-Barrasso, vice president of global policy and advocacy.

She said the people of Gaza have had everything taken from them and “can endure no more”.

“The events of this weekend in Nuseirat laid bare that nowhere and no one in Gaza is safe. The deal – if adhered to – would finally return the hostages to their families and ensure military actions to free them do not come at such a devastating and unacceptable civilian cost.

“A ceasefire will only turn the tide on this humanitarian catastrophe if it is permanent and the obstacles to aid delivery removed. The global community must ensure that this ceasefire is not just a temporary measure, but stops the fighting and paves the way for a sustained peace process.”

Israel is detaining more than 9,000 Palestinians: Prisoner rights group

According to the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society, 9,300 are currently in Israeli prisons.

This includes:

  • 2,056 who have been sentenced
  • 3,794 who are detained
  • 3,450 who are in administrative detention (without charge or trial)

The numbers include 9,021 Palestinians from the occupied West Bank, 194 from the Gaza Strip (who are known to the rights group), and 85 from Israel proper.

The continued impunity and destruction of international law is one of the reasons Putin doesn't care about what the West is doing to stop the invasion of Ukraine. Biden needs this 'ceasefire' win to gain back support, Ukraine needs that as well. Putin can hold out until Trump comes back in power. If that happens both the Palestinians and Ukrainians are fucked :/

@BFR Thanks for the apology, accepted.

I really hope this ceasefire will go through.

You can hear the movie rights being sold to Hollywood to make another tasteless war crime movie like Black Hawk Down.
The rescue was a PR stunt for Netanyahu. The celebration of it in Israel now stands in the way of ending the war.

Here's how Israel conducted its operation to rescue 4 hostages while reportedly killing over 270 Palestinians

https://edition.cnn.com/2024/06/10/middleeast/inside-israels-hostage-rescue-intl-dst/index.html

Two days after an Israeli military operation rescued four hostages being held by Hamas in Nuseirat refugee camp, central Gaza, killing more than 270 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials, new details are emerging about what was one of the most dramatic and deadly events since the war started.

The daytime rescue operation, which took weeks of planning, caught militants holding hostages in two different buildings in a densely packed civilian area off guard. It appeared to have been carried out by Israeli forces using non-military vehicles, including a white Mercedes van, according to eyewitnesses, whose accounts tallied with videos analyzed by CNN. Eyewitnesses also said that they saw Israeli forces in disguise – dressed as Hamas fighters or civilians.

“They were dressed in military uniforms like resistance fighters, carrying helmets and wearing signs of the [Hamas] resistance, giving the impression to people that they were resistance fighters, but in reality, they were an Israeli special forces unit,” Khalil Al Tirawi, a local resident, told CNN.

The Israeli military denied using civilian vehicles, but declined to say whether the officers conducting the rescue were disguised as militants or dressed as Palestinian civilians. The Israeli military had previously used civilian clothing as a tactic in its operations.

UN ‘profoundly shocked’ at civilian toll of Israel operation to free captives

The UN human rights office says civilian deaths in Gaza during the Israeli operation to release four captives held by armed groups in a densely populated area could amount to war crimes.

“We are profoundly shocked at the impact on civilians of the Israeli forces’ operation. Hundreds of Palestinians, many of them civilians, were reportedly killed and injured,” said Jeremy Laurence, spokesperson for the UN human rights office.

“Furthermore, by holding hostages in such densely populated areas, the armed groups doing so are putting the lives of Palestinian civilians, as well as the hostages themselves, at added risk from the hostilities. All these actions, by both parties, may amount to war crimes.”

I fear the lives of the rest of the hostages will only get more difficult, moved underground, isolated, in places where they can get bombed. Ceasefire can't come fast enough.

Palestinians describe Israeli killings in Gaza raid to free captives

Palestinians have accused Israeli forces of executions and mass killings during a major attack to free four Israeli captives in Nuseirat, central Gaza.

Among the 274 dead as a result of the Israeli army’s incursion were at least 64 children, 57 women and 37 elderly people, Gaza’s Health Ministry has said. Another 798 Palestinians were wounded in the Israeli raid.

Biden calls on Hamas to ‘prove’ they want a ceasefire

US President Joe Biden has called on Hamas to accept a US-backed ceasefire deal, following the adoption of a UN Security Council resolution on Monday calling for an immediate halt to fighting in Gaza.

“Hamas says it wants a ceasefire. This deal is an opportunity to prove they mean it,” he wrote on X.

Hamas released a statement welcoming the UN resolution shortly after it passed, and said it’s ready to work with mediators to implement it.

The US has claimed that Israel’s government proposed the ceasefire proposal currently on the table, but public statements from key members of Netanyahu’s coalition, including the prime minister himself, have called into question their commitment to the deal.

Hamas agrees to ceasefire resolution

Reuters news agency is reporting that Hamas has agreed to a ceasefire resolution that was adopted by the UN Security Council yesterday, according to the group’s senior official Sami Abu Zuhri.

He added that it was up to Washington to ensure that Israel abides by it.

On Monday, Hamas was quick to welcome the resolution. In a statement after the vote, Hamas said it was ready to cooperate with mediators and enter indirect negotiations over the implementation of the principles of the agreement.

Blinken says there is Israeli ‘consensus’ on ceasefire plan

Speaking in Tel Aviv after a series of meetings with Israeli officials, US Secretary of State Blinken said he believes there is a “strong consensus” among Israeli leaders to move forward the Gaza ceasefire plan.

Blinken said Netanyahu, who he met yesterday, reiterated his support for the plan. Blinken said he received positive signals from Defense Minister Gallant and other Israeli officials.

“This proposal and moving forward on it is the first step,” Blinken told reporters in the Israeli capital. “We want to see it come to fruition.”

  • Hamas’s expression of support for a UN-backed Gaza ceasefire plan is a “hopeful sign”.
  • The US is still committed to “the defeat of Hamas”, but military means are not sufficient to achieve this goal. “There has to be a clear political plan, a clear humanitarian plan, in order to ensure Hamas does not in any shape or form resume control of Gaza.”

Blinken shielding Israel, putting onus on Hamas

What Blinken is doing is trying to deflect from Israel being the party that perhaps isn’t ready to fully commit to the three-stage ceasefire plan, and putting the onus on Hamas.

That might be a result of the conversations Blinken has had with Gallant, Netanyahu and others in Israel who say that “you cannot keep pressuring us like this, you need to focus on Hamas”.

It might well be a strategy. What was interesting as well in Blinken’s remarks is that he referenced Yahya Sinwar. He didn’t call him by name, but said there’s one guy who is making the decisions for Hamas, not the Hamas leadership in Doha.

Eleven killed in Israeli attacks despite UNSC ceasefire resolution

A reminder that despite that legally binding ceasefire proposal at the UN Security Council, Israel has continued its attacks across Gaza.

At least 11 people were killed, including children, and many wounded in attacks in northern and central Gaza.

Israeli military bombs home in Deir el-Balah, killing three

The Israeli military has bombed a home in the az-Zawayda area of Deir el-Balah in central Gaza, killing three people, the Wafa news agency reports.

The bomb struck the home of the al-Talbani family, killing two children and their father, as well as injuring many more, according to Wafa.

Israeli military bombs apartment in Gaza City, killing at least 8

At least eight people have been killed, most of them children, and several injured in an Israeli attack on a residential apartment in Gaza City, local media is reporting.

The apartment, located in the northern city’s Daraj neighbourhood, belonged to the Ashour family.

‘I just want to stay alive for my mother’ says boy in Gaza

A badly injured Palestinian boy was seen pleading for survival so he could help his mother, after he was injured in an Israeli attack on a house on the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.

Israeli army says four soldiers killed in Gaza

The soldiers were “killed in fighting in south Gaza” on Monday, the Israeli military said in a statement, without elaborating on the circumstances of their deaths. The Army Radio said they were killed in an explosion set off in a building in the Shaboura neighbourhood of Rafah.

More casualties in Gaza City

Israeli forces have bombed a home in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood, killing at least one person and injuring others, reports Wafa news agency.

Civil defence crew are still searching for victims trapped under the rubble of this home and another in Gaza City’s Daraj neighbourhood, where we previously reported that eight people were killed.

Rafah still a battlefield as rescuers struggle to reach victims

It was a deadly night for Palestinians in Gaza City, where at least three houses were targeted. All of these homes had people living in them and civil defence teams are still searching for people trapped under the rubble.

In Rafah, we know that at least two farmers were killed after Israeli forces targeted them. According to Israeli media, four Israeli soldiers were also killed by a blast in a booby-trapped building.

Rafah has been a battlefield for the past couple of weeks and we do not know what is currently happening on the ground as there has been a telecommunications blackout. No ambulances or civil defence teams have been able to rescue people trapped under the houses.

We know that Israeli soldiers have been moving towards the western parts of Rafah, where live ammunition has been fired at Palestinians still sheltering there. It’s still escalating.

Israeli military claims to dismantle fighter cells in Rafah

Israeli forces says they carried out targeted raids in Rafah, taking out fighter cells and called in air strikes throughout southern and central Gaza. According to an Israeli military statement, air strikes hit 35 targets over the past day.

As we’ve been reporting, such strikes have caused extensive civilian casualties, including killing children in an apartment in Gaza City. At least 37,124 people have been killed and 84,712 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza since October 7.

Israeli forces shoot Palestinian man during storming of Balata camp

The Israeli military has shot a Palestinian man during their storming of the Balata refugee camp near Nablus in the occupied West Bank, the Wafa news agency reports. The man’s condition is unknown.

Israeli forces have also stormed the town of Azzun, east of Qalqilya, and detained several Palestinians, according to Wafa.

Hamas says commander among those killed in Ramallah

The Hamas group says one of its commanders stationed in the occupied West Bank was among four people killed by the Israeli military near the city of Ramallah.

In a statement, they named Mohammed Jaber Abdo as among the four Palestinian fighters killed in Monday night’s incident.

We previously reported that Israeli troops raided the village of Kafr Nima searching for a Palestinian man they accused of carrying out an arson attack in an illegal Israeli outpost. Israeli forces opened fire on the vehicle the four were in. All four men were killed while eight other people were wounded in the raid.

Israeli forces took over home, shot at car during West Bank raid: Witness

Ghassan Abdo, the uncle of one of the Palestinian men killed by Israeli forces during their raid of the West Bank town of Kufr Ni’meh, has said Israeli special forces broke into his home to wage an attack on a vehicle passing by.

The Israeli forces, Abdo told Al Jazeera, climbed onto his roof and then shot at a car carrying a Palestinian who had been wounded or killed during the raid. “After that, those who were on the roof of our house started shooting everywhere randomly,” said Abdo, calling their actions a “big crime”.
