Thousands protest in Sweden’s Malmo against Israel’s participation in Eurovision

This demonstration is a kind of mirror image of the demonstrations that were held here in Malmo on Thursday when Israel’s singer Eden Golan performed in the semifinal of the Eurovision Song Contest and got through to the final.

Malmo has a very large Muslim population and a very large population of a Middle East diaspora.

People here are extremely angry that the European Broadcasting Union that organises Eurovision has said that Israel can participate when, for example, two years ago Russia was banned after its invasion of Ukraine.

Protesters slam ‘double standards’ over Israel’s Eurovision participation

Adel Sadat, an organiser in the Malmo demonstrations against Israel’s Eurovision participation, says there are two main reasons for the protests.

The national component was against the Swedish government and the local authorities in Malmo for allowing the Eurovision Song Contest to be held in Sweden.

And then the international, of course, we stand in solidarity with Gaza and the Palestinian people and to really show the world that this is not acceptable,” Sadat said, criticising the contest organisers’ “hypocrisy”.

“Basically, double standards for not allowing the Russians, but allowing Israel [to participate],” he said.

And for completeness sake, Westbank raids and arrests also still continue, as well as cross border attacks between Hezbollah and Israel.

TLDR: No aid, IDF expands operations to Western Rafah, no outlook on any ceasefire.

US turning their complicity into offers to limit Rafah attack... Who are they fooling.

Report: US offers intel on Hamas leaders in exchange for ‘limited’ Rafah attack

The US is offering Israel’s military “sensitive intelligence” to target Hamas officials in Gaza in exchange for not launching a full-scale assault on overcrowded Rafah city, a news report says.

The Washington Post, citing four people familiar with the situation, reports other incentives not to launch a major operation in Rafah include information on the location of Hamas’s vast network of tunnels.

Also offered up by Washington are thousands of tents to house some of the nearly two million displaced people throughout the war-battered Gaza Strip, according to the sources who spoke to the newspaper anonymously.

The Biden administration has been widely criticized for arming and failing to put a stop to Israel’s seven-month war, which has killed nearly 35,000 people, mostly children and women.

In other words: US gives the OK for ongoing Rafah operation with a bunch of tents as compensation.

Hamas calls for probe into Israeli mistreatment of Palestinian detainees

Hamas official Abdelrahman Shadid urged international legal and humanitarian organisations to investigate Israeli military mistreatment of Palestinian detainees in their prisons.

Shadid called the crimes against prisoners, which have included the death of at least 17 Palestinians, “unprecedented”.

“We call for an investigation that would expose the Israeli crimes against unarmed prisoners and for international pressure to be exercised on Israel to allow lawyers and humanitarian groups access to prisons and detention centres,” Shadid said in a statement.

At least 50 professors arrested at US campus protests: Report

At least 50 professors have been arrested at pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations across the US, according to US broadcaster CNN, which said it reviewed police records, court filings and news reports.

Since April 18, more than 2,400 students have been arrested on more than 50 campuses, it said.

Some of the arrested professors, who said they wished to support students’ right to free speech, were detained violently, resulting in injuries.

Israeli protesters call for new elections, release of captives

Demonstrators are gathering in Tel Aviv to protest against Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and call for early elections, as well as the release of captives in Gaza. The rally by thousands of people is taking place outside the defence ministry headquarters, where police barricaded some streets.

Demonstrators say the government doesn’t care about the captives and it’s leading the country ‘towards destruction’.

Many in Malmo ‘feel angry’ as thousands demonstrate against Israel

Police estimated between 6,000 and 8,000 people joined the demonstration in Malmo, Sweden, against Israel’s participation in Eurovision Song Contest, with Israel’s war on Gaza casting a shadow over the final of the glitzy contest.

One of the protest organisers said people are upset about the Israeli contestant’s inclusion because Israel is a country “committing genocide” against the Palestinian people.

“Here in Malmo a lot of people are from Palestine,” Sead Busuladzic told Al Jazeera. “And many in their families are getting hurt there. They just feel angry about the situation and how the Swedish government and city has handled this issue.”

‘Let the haters hate’: Hollywood actress Gal Gadot backs Israel’s Eden Golan

Israeli actress Gal Gadot told Israel’s representative at Eurovision to stay defiant in the face of tens of thousands protesting the country’s inclusion in the song contest and the war on Gaza.

Gadot said some of her movies were also boycotted in multiple countries because of her support of the Israeli government, but told Eden Golan “it doesn’t matter at all” and “haters are the ones losing”.

“Let the haters hate,” Gadot said.

She also plays the Evil Queen in Disney's live action Snow White coming out next year. Another one to boycott.
(Not that their live action crap is any good anyway, I'll keep boycotting them for Disney shitting on my childhood lol)

Antiwar protests continuing in Malmo during controversial Eurovision

It’s been a fast-moving situation here with thousands of protesters making their way through the city. Most of the demonstrations received permission and the police have been able to keep them orderly.

However, quite a few demonstrators suddenly started protesting outside the Eurovision venue with Palestinian flags and were boxed in by police and taken away one by one. Some were forcibly removed.

Demonstrators are angry that an Israeli contestant was allowed to participate, comparing it to when Russia was banned because of the war on Ukraine. Protesters say it’s hypocrisy.

Greta Thunberg arrested at pro-Palestine Malmo protest

The climate activist was arrested as she demonstrated near the venue of the Eurovision final in the southern Swedish city. Among a group of pro-Palestinian protesters, Thunberg was seen walking along shouting, “This is a genocide”, while surrounded by police.

Earlier in the week, she was among more than 10,000 antiwar campaigners who staged a non-violent protest ahead of the Eurovision semifinal.

Hezbollah targets Israeli military base near Kiryat Shmona

The armed Lebanese group says it launched projectiles at the Beit Hilal military base, east of Kiryat Shmona, in northern Israel.

It said F-16 warplanes tried to intercept the projectiles but failed. Hezbollah also released a video of a barrage of rockets fired at Kiryat Shmona on Friday that led to a large fire in the area.

Israeli military claims attack on Hezbollah building, drone interceptions

The Israeli army says fighter jets attacked a military structure belonging to Hezbollah in the Amra region of southern Lebanon. It also confirmed an attack in the Beit Hillal area that Hezbollah claimed earlier.

The Israeli military said aircraft managed to successfully intercept two unnamed aerial vehicles inside Lebanese territory, adding two more drones that got through inflicted no casualties.

Humanitarian operations struggling with tight restrictions: UN

The UN agency OCHA says it’s struggling to provide Palestinians with aid because of Israeli restrictions: key crossings are closed, missions denied, and movement delayed.

“The combination of severe access constraints and ongoing insecurity has resulted in a non-permissive and volatile operational environment for humanitarian actors. With soaring needs, all parties must enable safe access for aid to make a difference,” it said in a report.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in April, 21 humanitarian missions were cancelled, 20 denied, and 34 missions impeded by Israeli authorities.

Israeli forces shot at fuel truck in Gaza, denied help to dying Palestinian

A new UN report outlines how Israeli forces are hindering humanitarian operations inside Gaza – and even a life-saving rescue attempt.

The UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on April 9 it attempted – as part of a mission coordinated with the Israeli military – to get a truck carrying 18,000 litres of desperately needed fuel to northern Gaza.

OCHA’s team waited as required at a holding area near a checkpoint in the militarised boundary between northern and southern Gaza when a UN vehicle – sent to assist with a mechanical issue encountered by the fuel tanker – observed a Palestinian man with a gunshot wound to the head who was still alive.

“The organization, in coordination with OCHA, urgently requested permission from Israeli authorities to provide first aid and transport the injured man to an ambulance. While waiting for the approval, live ammunition was fired from the direction of the checkpoint, hitting the fuel tanker’s windscreen. The approval to assist the injured man was never granted, and the man died after more than two hours without medical treatment.”

Infrastructure damage another factor hampering humanitarian aid: UN

Many humanitarian missions to the Gaza Strip are regularly denied or delayed, but the destruction inside the enclave also presents significant challenges to humanitarian movements.

“Routes that remain available for use by humanitarian organizations are frequently blocked by debris, heavily congested, and contaminated with unexploded ordnance,” according to the UN’s Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Displaced Palestinians arrive in central Gaza after fleeing from Rafah

Some 2.3 million tonnes of debris – from the total 37.5 million tonnes across Gaza – is attributed to damaged roads, with the UN Mine Action Service reporting a “considerable” amount contains undetonated bombs.

At least 10 percent of fired ammunition potentially fails to function, leading to 1,000-pound (450kg) bombs being left at major intersections and within school premises.  Debris also is estimated to contain about 800,000 tonnes of asbestos and other contaminants, OCHA reports.

Evacuation orders in Rafah for civilians ‘unacceptable’: EU

President of the European Council Charles Michel called on Israeli government to “respect humanitarian law” and not “undertake a ground operation” in the southernmost Gaza city.

“Evacuation orders for civilians trapped in Rafah to unsafe zones are unacceptable,” he posted on X. “All efforts must continue to secure an agreement for a lasting ceasefire. The EU is committed to a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution.”

You need to tell that to Biden as he just gave the OK for further Rafah 'operations'

Israeli soldier killed in northern Gaza: Army

The soldier killed has been identified by the Israeli army as 20-year-old Ariel Tsym. Tsym, who was from Modi’in, was part of the Nahal Brigade, the army added.  On Friday, four Israeli soldiers were killed and several wounded in fierce fighting in northern Gaza City’s Zeitoun neighbourhood.

The army says 272 Israeli troops have been killed in the war on Gaza since late October. (as well as 336 on October 7)

Israeli military says Palestinians killed in fighting in Gaza’s Zeitoun

The Israeli military reports heavy fighting in the Zeitoun neighbourhood in northern Gaza City, saying its Nahal Brigade was supported by air raids during an invasion of the area. It said it killed an unspecified number of Palestinian fighters, including a fighter belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad who was involved in the October 7 attacks.

The military also released an image to claim that hand grenades, mortar shells and firearms were found in the raid.

Israeli military destroys Gaza home of Al Jazeera’s Anas al-Sharif

An Israeli air raid destroyed the home of Al Jazeera correspondent Anas al-Sharif, whose father was killed in an attack in northern Gaza in December.

Translation: The first moments after Al Jazeera correspondent, colleague Anas Al-Sharif, received the news of the destruction of his house in an Israeli raid on the northern Jabalia camp.

I guess Lavender AI has put Aljazeera journalists on the Hamas target list, if they weren't on there already...

Israeli attack in northern Gaza captured by Al Jazeera

Our Al Jazeera Arabic correspondent Anas al-Sharif says he and his team were in the middle of reporting when Israel attacked an area not too far from their location.

“Thank God we miraculously survived. During press coverage of the occupation’s targeting of citizens’ homes east of Jabalia camp, an area close to us was targeted,” he said.

In a video posted on X, people can be seen running frantically in the streets to seek safety following the Israeli attack.

Palestinian Red Crescent evacuates causalties after Israeli attack on Nuseirat

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society released a video showing its ambulance teams transferring one Palestinian killed in an Israeli attack and another who was injured. The shelling that inflicted the casualties hit a house in Nuseirat, in the central part of the war-torn enclave.

Israeli military invades Jabalia again as Hamas ‘reconstitutes militarily’

Along with other neighbourhoods across Gaza such as Zeitoun, which the Israeli army has been coming back to repeatedly, Jabalia in the north is also being invaded again.

This is happening because Hamas is “reconstituting militarily there”, says the latest report by the Critical Threats Project and the Institute for the Study of War, two US-based think tanks.

It also noted intensified operations in the south. “The Israeli military expanded its evacuation orders for civilians around Rafah, extending the evacuation zone to two refugee camps and nearby neighbourhoods.”

So much for Biden putting his pinky toe down, he's crawled fully back into Netanyahu's pocket again

Biden: Gaza ceasefire possible ‘tomorrow’ if Hamas frees captives

US President Joe Biden is putting the ball in Hamas’s court in mediated negotiations to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza and an exchange of prisoners.

“There would be a ceasefire tomorrow if Hamas would release the hostages,” Biden said at a fundraiser outside Seattle, after avoiding the topic at three similar events on Friday.

Israel this week rejected a ceasefire and captive release agreement after Hamas agreed to it.

Israel is determined to press ahead with its offensive on Rafah, where 1.4 million displaced Palestinians are sheltering, in defiance of warnings from the UN and its allies, including its key military and political backer the US.

Israel at this point is just all in on death and destruction

Itamar Ben-Gvir pretty much is. Netanyahu is mostly out for self preservation. He has to stay the course or will end up in jail. There's no other exit for him since the corruption trial will continue as soon as the government falls and Ben-Gvir will make sure of that if Netanyahu strafes of the path of total destruction of Gaza and resettlement of it after. Plus investigation into what went wrong on Oct 7 will fall on Netanyahu's head, as well as the ICC is investigating him for his actions in 2014 and after.

Israel in general doesn't get to see what actually goes on in Gaza, they get the sanitized IDF version from Hagari while hammering in the fact that without the war, Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran will wipe out Israel. They don't even get the choice to watch more balanced news anymore since Al Jazeera was banned. And all the social media stuff gets explained away as disinformation, Palestinians faking it, don't trust anything they say/show.

Dehumanization of Palestinians has been going on for many decades and starts from birth. It works just as well against people right next door, like most US citizens didn't care what happened to Afghani and Iraqi Civilians (of which the US is responsible for over 400 thousand civilian deaths)
Were Americans all in on death and destruction? No, they didn't know and didn't care.

The bigger problem is, Biden is in the same boat. He can't admit he was wrong, he already gets threatened with impeachment for pausing one shipment. Nor does he want to admit he was wrong, his indoctrination is strong as well. He wants to see less civilian deaths, which just means go a little slower, less war crimes in the news.

It's a fucking mess and neither Europe nor Asia will actually do anything about it, neither the Arab countries. Everyone is merely virtue signalling while keeping relations with Israel intact (bar a few outliers like Colombia, South Africa and Turkey and really only Turkey has enacted meaningful sanctions)

Rescuing survivors, recovering bodies ‘very difficult’ in northern Gaza

The Gaza Civil Defence agency says the “intensification” of attacks by Israeli forces on homes in northern Gaza has made it challenging for its teams to carry out their work.

“It has become very difficult for our crews to deal with rescuing the wounded and recovering the [dead],” the agency’s spokesperson said on Telegram.

Israeli troops are operating in northern Gaza after Hamas “rehabilitated its military capabilities” over the past few months, military spokesman Daniel Hagari told reporters.

Israeli bombardment kills 19 in northern and central Gaza

At least 10 people have been killed in an Israeli air raid on the home of the Ashram family in the Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City, the news agency Wafa is reporting. Nine people were also killed, including a young girl, when Israeli warplanes bombed the Al-Louh family’s home in the Deir el-Balah refugee camp, Wafa reports.

Doctors Without Borders stops work after Rafah evacuation order

The Israeli military’s latest evacuation orders in Rafah forced medical charity Doctors Without Borders, known by its French initials MSF, to halt work at the Indonesian Hospital.

The group said it must relocate 22 patients to other health facilities because “we can no longer guarantee their safety”.

Israeli jets ‘carpet-bombing’ Jabalia: Report

The Wafa news agency is reporting heavy Israeli bombardment in the Jabalia refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip.

Citing local sources, Wafa said that “Israeli fighter jets carpet-bombed” eastern areas of Jabalia, killing several people. The agency said the exact number of casualties was not immediately clear.

Wafa also said that Israeli quadcopter drones opened fire on ambulances near a UNRWA clinic in the centre of Jabalia. The attacks come as the Israeli army renewed its assault on northern Gaza after previously saying it had defeated Hamas in the area.

Earlier, our colleagues at Al Jazeera Arabic captured Israeli bombardment in Jabalia, with correspondent Anas al-Sharif describing “fire belt” bombing in the area. The attacks also destroyed al-Sharif’s home.

All hospitals in north Gaza ‘out of service’: Civil Defence

A spokesperson from Gaza Civil Defence has told Al Jazeera that all hospitals in the northern Gaza Strip are now out of service.

The hospital closures come after the UN warned hospitals across the Gaza Strip were at risk of running out of fuel. No aid trucks have entered the Gaza Strip since Sunday, May 5, according to the UN, with Israel blocking the Rafah crossing in the south of Gaza.

Paediatric surgeon and son killed in Israeli strike on Deir el-Balah

The Wafa news agency is reporting that Paediatric surgeon Muhammad Nimr Qazaat, 72, and his son Youssef, 33, a dentist, were among several Palestinians killed in an Israeli airstrike on Saturday evening.

The father and son were in Deir el-Balah after having fled their homes in Gaza City earlier in the war, Wafa said. Qazaat was “one of the founders of paediatric surgery in the Gaza Strip”, Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Fadel Naim said in a post on X.

‘We are on the verge of going insane’: Beit Lahiya resident

Palestinians in Beit Lahiya in northern Gaza told Al Jazeera they do not know where to go as Israeli forces intensified attacks there after ordering residents in the area to evacuate.

“We are shocked. We do not know what to do. We are physically and mentally worn out. We are on the verge of going insane. We have been under this hell for eight months. Enough is enough,” said Emad Oudeh.

“Look at this, rubbish and debris. We are dying just to get our hands on some water or something to feed our children. This is not life. We struggle to get firewood and feed our starving children, and above all, the Israelis have been hitting us with missiles and bombs for months. What adds insult to injury is the recent warning; for God’s sake, where do we go? Even Rafah is coming under attack.”
