Gaza death toll surges to 34 as relentless attacks continue
At least 34 Palestinians have been killed across the Gaza Strip since dawn as Israel pounds the coastal enclave, medical sources tell Al Jazeera. The Health Ministry said 77 people were killed and 222 wounded over the past 24 hours.
A number of victims remain under the rubble and on the streets as ambulance and civil defence crews are unable to reach them because of Israeli army fire or restrictions.
Gaza City residents forced to flee, then hunted down by air strikes
The reason Palestinians are not leaving Gaza City now is the fear and intimidation created by the Israeli military’s ground offensive.
There are major parts of the city that the army is now reaching, where it is carrying out deadly attacks on the civilian population. The military is sharply ordering people to leave their homes, but at the same time targeting them with sky-predator drones and quadcopters.
Those who manage to get to al-Rashid Street and move towards central and southern Gaza face aerial surveillance and bombardment. Last night, an army helicopter flew low and fired at the road, causing mayhem and panic among displaced families.
Imagine people are fleeing for their lives and at the same time being chased by the Israeli military. It’s all part of the Israeli tactics to depopulate the area.
‘Last opportunity’: Israeli military seals off battered Gaza City
Israeli tanks have blocked the main road into Gaza City and soldiers are preventing those who left the besieged urban centre from returning.
Tanks and troops set up sand barriers on the road south out of Gaza City. People are being allowed out but those who left in search of food are no longer being permitted to return, residents said.
“This is the last opportunity for Gaza residents who wish to do so to move south and leave Hamas operatives isolated in Gaza City itself in the face of the [army’s] continuing full-scale operations,” Israeli Defence Minister Katz said in a statement.
Those leaving would be subjected to vetting by the military, Katz added.

Israeli attack kills more Palestinian women in Gaza
In war-battered Gaza, nine people – almost all women – have been killed when a house was hit by Israeli fire in Deir el-Balah. Three people died in an air raid on a tent for forcibly displaced Palestinians in the city, according to Al-Aqsa Hospital.
In Gaza City to the north, health officials at al-Shifa Hospital said they received one body and several injured people, adding staff members are having difficulty getting to the main health centre because of Israel’s ground invasion and heavy bombardment.
Gaza death toll rises again: At least 53 Palestinians killed in Israel attacks on Gaza
The death toll since dawn today includes 29 people who were killed in southern Gaza, 14 people killed in central Gaza and 10 people killed in Gaza City.
