Change YoY: = My Rating: 9.6 / 10

Final Fantasy X was the game I originally bought a PS2 for back in 2002. It was also the first time I had ever bought a console with my own money, and gotten one specifically to play a single game. If it hadn't lived up to my expectations I might have been just a tiny bit annoyed, but fortunately it turned out to be one of the best games I'd ever played. I've never been too bothered by graphical quality, but this game absolutely blew me away at the time. It was so far beyond anything I had played up to that point that I still remember that feeling to this day. The music was then the second element that struck me, the To Zanarkand theme that plays in the intro instantly burying itself into my mind forever as those first few piano chords rang out.

I've since replayed the game several times, and I find myself enjoying more and more every single time. While the visual aren't as mindblowing as they once were, every other aspect of the game seems to grow on me over time. The battle system remains one of the best in the whole series, allowing for an impressive level of tactical depth as each character with you can be an active participant at all times, the music is among the best video scores ever, and the story and characters resonate with me even more strongly than they did back when I first played through the game. There's this constant sense of underlying melancholy that permeates the game's world and story, a place constantly teetering on the edge of destruction, where even the brief periods of relative peace only ever come through great loss and suffering.

To this day, Final Fantasy X remains my second favourite PS2 game ever, as well as my second favourite Final Fantasy game in general. Though some of its elements were constrained by technological limitations and Squaresoft's inexperience with things like voice acting, it remains one of the most emotionally powerful entries in the whole series, the ending being commonly cited as particularly heartbreaking by many fans of the franchise. Over 20 years after its original release, Final Fantasy X is still just as great as it was back then, and it probably won't be too long until I once again go back to replay it.

More hints.

#5

-A small neutral nation rich in natural resources must defend itself from an invasion by an imperial alliance

-After repelling an attack on their home town, three characters join the militia to defend their homeland

-Set in an alternate history Europe during its version of the second World War

#4 Dark Souls

-Will you end the age, or perpetuate the cycle for a little longer?

-The world was once a stagnant, still place covered in fog. Then, came fire.

#3

-32 years have passed since contact with Earth was lost

-Those that were stranded in space as a result came to be known as 'the lost generation'

-The developer of this game is these days better known for a series of open world games that began as a GTA clone, but soon leaned much more into absurd humor and silliness to find its own identity

#2

-Count 108 years...

-...and when the moon that never sets glows red...

-...the moon child descends to the earth to fill the world with holy bliss.

#1 Final Fantasy IX

-The play at the start is just a ruse

-For a group of thieves, they can pull of a pretty decent stage play

2 makes me think Bloodborne.

I can see why you'd think that, but Bloodborne was my #8.

09 - Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2
- In this game, you’ll visit France, Mexico, and various different locations in the US.
- The bonus levels see you dropped in on a platform in the middle of the ocean, as well as having the opportunity to roam around Heaven itself.
- These locations are so appealing that even ol’ Spidey can get in on the action if you unlock him.
- He’ll only be slinging webs when he brings his board back as part of a special trick.

08 - Super Mario World (incorrect guesses - Super Mario RPG)
- 11 96
- 11 is for the minimalists and speedrunners; 96 is for the completionists.
- This game introduced a beloved character to the series. The character’s main function was conceived as an idea for previous games, but the hardware at the time was not powerful enough for it to come to fruition.
- The name of the first world in the game has a reference to the character in the above clue, although you’ll first be able to encounter him in the second world.

05 - The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
- To 100% the game, you’ll have to interact with every living creature. You’ll have to interact with them in just the right way though, otherwise your collaborator will have difficulty doing his part.
- In the original version of this game, you could connect a handheld device to your console to use an item given to you by someone who you freed from jail.

03 - Super Mario Bros 3
- The first time in this series (that I know of) that you can get a power up that mimics that of an enemy.
- The first time in this series that you use a map screen to access levels.

02
- You may come across numerous dragons throughout the game, but you’ll only get to fight one in the penultimate level.
- To be exact, there’s 48 dragons you may come across, before you fight one in level 17.

We are now headed into my top 10.

15. My favorite JRPG from 2022. It features an expansive world like most games in this series and fun mobile gameplay. Right away, at the start of the game you have to make a decision which character will be the protagonist, and the story will be slightly different based on this choice.

The previous game in this series may have been lambasted for being too short and lacking content, but this game delivers on all the content you would need. It even has a fancy minigame called Es'owa where you can use characters on cards from previous games.

11. Similar game to #12. Unlike that game however the main character has a big weakness to sexy girls, a feature that an enemy took advantage of, flat chested girls on the other hand have no effect.

The main characters are a demon overlord prince, his retainer, and an angel. They meet several any bosses along the way and force them to server him afterwards.

10. The main character was involved in a crime, but probably falsely accused.

9. Another word for Destiny and another word for Bluff crash land on an uncivilized world called Elicoor.

8. Capturing new monsters and leveling up was needlessly complicated in this sequel, but when you figure it out your party's power grows exponentially in this 3v3 turn based combat.

Top five time! Hallowed ground.

#5 - This RPG was included on the SNES Classic mini console, although its older brother missed the cut for some reason
#4 - Remade in 2023, this action-adventure game reinvented the staples of the franchise, for better or worse
#3 - The publisher of this seminal shooter wasn't happy with the title; the developer compromised by adding a subtitle
#2 - Speaking of subtitles, this 2000 action-RPG added one when it made the move to PS2
#1 - According to the director, this game's map was inspired in part by his hometown of Kyoto, which is conveniently where the game's publisher is headquartered

Disgaea is correct.
