It's called personal preference. Most debates involving console wars are just people projecting their personal preferences.  I prefer SNES but I do love Genesis. Ranxer X and MUSHA are some of the best games ever. I Just got my Retrobit copy of Gleylancer and Assault Suit Leynos is one of my fave games ever hence the name. Love that franchise in general. Again in the end I still love SNES more for it has a lot more stuff I love but it's not hard to see why some prefer it. The best part of that generation is both consoles can be argued to be equal but different. Equally different which gives us a true variety. Same with Turbografx16 the lesser talked about but still fantastic console.

the gap is still so vast, there is no way something like "personal preference" can make up for it.

for example even if you "preferred" mario andretti's street racing part 2 on genesis to super metroid on snes, would it be reasonable to have a debate on which one is better? everyone knows which one is better and its the same case here. even if people prefer genesis they know the snes is better, hence why i never understood the debate. there are things i prefer that i know are inferior to other things, i dont hide behind it being "my preference" to avoid admitting it. just sayin.

No one is comparing Mario Andretti to Super Metroid wtf are you talking about? It would be more Sonic vs Mario and Fire Emblem vs Shining Force. SNES is a better console for RPGs but Genesis is a better console for Shmups. So yes it's personal preference.

well obviously i am making a point about how preference makes something better, which is something you brought into the discussion. im sure all the lurkers who are watching this back and forth understood that, it is hard to believe a veteran like you doesn't see what i am saying so i have to believe that you are engaging in the classic "shifting of the goal posts." 

i said that i never could understand the genesis > snes side of the debate, then you said "its called personal preference" then i said well what if someone prefers mario andretti to super metroid, does that mean that hypothetical debate would be reasonable? and now you are saying nobody is comparing mario andretti to super metroid, which isn't the point at all. do you see how that response doesnt track with the rest of the argument? you are engaging in "shifting the goalposts"

and now you are saying that snes is better for rpgs, well what if someone prefers phantasy star to anything on snes, does that make genesis better for rpg's just because of a personal preference or do you still maintain snes is better for rpgs? see, we all know what the truth is. snes is better for rpgs, genesis is better for shmups, snes is a better console, and super metroid is better than mario andretti. and mario is better than sonic too since you mention it.

Games are an inherently subjective medium; one man's trash is another man's treasure.
I prefer the SNES myself, but it's entirely possible for someone's personal tastes to align more closely with the Megadrive.
I mean, the PS2 sold like 7-8 times the Gamecube or Xbox and is widely considered the better console, but I personally enjoyed my Gamecube and my Xbox more than my PS2. It's all relative.

Because I don't want to get into a war and peace-sized novel and sentimental things. Just keep this short. Dreamcast over PS2 for me any day and I don't dislike PS2 at all. DC is my favorite console ever but also one of my fave things to exist.

Piracy was just everywhere here, people from major markets like NA, JP and some major EU countries might not realize how much that impacted the gaming landscape here.

To this day I haven't met a person that owned the NES here back then, but loads of people with Phantom System and the likes.

People would rarely even know what having original game copies was before the PS3.

But as a fellow Brazilian it really pains me to read you writing Genesis instead of Mega Drive, seriously, lol.

i like the gamecube better too but its not going to kill me to admit the ps2 was better.

some gaps are just gigantic though, like the snes vs genesis or mario andretti vs super metroid. 

"Better" is subjective though, hence it depends on the individual.

technically yes, but there comes a point where the gap is so wide that its irrelevant.

case in point: mario andretti vs super metroid. are you going to take someone seriously who is trying to make the case that mario andretti is the superior video game? in your heart you know this person is just plain wrong, but on the forums youll say "well thats just your opinion :)" i guess its a nice way to go about it and all, but the fact is that you know that would be an asanine argument to make.
