Switch vs DS Sales Comparison in Japan - August 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in December 2004 in Japan and the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the normal holiday periods and the Japanese Golden Week holiday for the two consoles do not lineup.

Switch Vs. DS Japan:

August 2023 is the 78th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Japan. During the latest month, the Switch has outsold the DS by 291,141 units when you align the launches.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the DS by 2.27 million units. The DS is currently ahead of the Switch by 2.27 million units.

The 78th month for the Switch is August 2023, while for the DS it is May 2011. The Switch has sold 30.46 million units, while the DS sold 32.73 million units during the same timeframe. The DS sold current Switch sales in month 67.

The DS has sold 32.99 million units lifetime in Japan. The Switch is currently 2.53 million units behind the lifetime sales of the DS.

Xbox Series X|S vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in Japan - August 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned sales of the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox 360 in Japan, as well as looking at lifetime original Xbox sales and Xbox One sales.

The Xbox Series X|S launched in Japan in November 2020, while the Xbox 360 launched in Japan in December 2005. The original Xbox launched in Japan in February 2002 and the Xbox One in September 2014.

XSX|S Vs. X360 Japan:

Gap change over last 12 months: 130,757 - X360

Total Lead: 257,338 - X360

Xbox Series X|S Total Sales: 489,176

Xbox 360 Total Sales: 746,514

August 2023 is the 34th month the Xbox Series X|S has been available for in Japan. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Xbox 360 when compared to the aligned launch of the Xbox Series X|S by 52,098 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Xbox Series X|S by 130,757 units. The Xbox 360 is currently ahead by 257,338 units.

The Xbox Series X|S has sold 489,176 units in 34 months, while the Xbox 360 sold 746,514 units. Month 34 for the Xbox Series X|S is August 2023 and for the Xbox 360 is September 2008.

The Xbox 360 crossed one million units in month 40 and 1.5 million units in month 67. The Xbox 360 sold 1.66 million units lifetime. The Xbox Series X|S is 1.17 million units behind lifetime Xbox 360 sales.

Switch is going to catch the DS in Japan shortly after these next holidays.  Then it's going to keep selling strong well past that.  

Switch has a lot of catching up to do when compared to the DS's worldwide total, but Japan is doing a lot of the heaving lifting in closing that gap too.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in Japan - August 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned Japanese sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020 in Japan, while the PlayStation 4 launched in February 2014. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Japan:

PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 3,711,060

August 2023 is the 34th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 62,025 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 634,936 units. The PS5 is currently ahead by 518,220 units.

The 34th month for the PS5 in Japan is August 2023, while for the PS4 it is November 2016. The PS5 has sold 4.23 million units, while the PS4 sold 3.71 million units during the same timeframe. The PS4 sold current PS5 sales in month 35.

The PS4 crossed 4 million in Japan in month 35, 5 million in month 41, and 6 million in month 47. The PS4 has sold 9.65 million units to date. The PS5 is currently 5.42 million units behind the lifetime sales of the PS4 in Japan.

Switch vs Xbox 360 Sales Comparison in the US - August 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Xbox 360.

The Xbox 360 launched in the US in November 2005, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

August 2023 is the 78th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Nintendo Switch by 77,206 units.

In the last 12 months, the Xbox 360 has outsold the Nintendo Switch by 1.88 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Xbox 360 by 7.62 million units.

The 78th month for the Nintendo Switch is August 2023 and for the Xbox 360 it is April 2012. The Switch has sold 41.97 million units, while the Xbox 360 sold 34.35 million units during the same timeframe. The Xbox 360 sold current Switch sales in month 97.

The Xbox 360 sold 43.75 million units in the US during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 1.78 million units to outsell the Xbox 360 in the US.

PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison in the US - August 2023

This monthly series compares the aligned US sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

August 2023 is the 34th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 191,946 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS5 has outsold the PS4 by 1.25 million units. The PS5 is currently ahead of the PS4 by 0.75 million units.

The PS5 has sold 15.20 million units in 34 months, while the PS4 sold 14.44 million units. Month 34 for the PS5 is August 2023 and for the PS4 is August 2016.

The PS4 crossed 15 million units in month 37, 20 million in month 47, and 25 million in month 57. The PS4 has sold 34.89 million units to date in the US. The PS5 is 19.69 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in the US.

Shoudn't be too hard for PS5 to outsell the PS4 in NA.

It needs some good deals, and regular releases though.

This monthly series compares the aligned Europe sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.

The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Europe:

August 2023 is the 34th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 5 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 4 by 247,594 units.

In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 1.46 million units. The PS5 is currently behind the PS4 by 4.68 million units.

The PS5 has sold 13.17 million units in 34 months, while the PS4 sold 17.86 million units. Month 34 for the PS5 is August 2023 and for the PS4 is August 2016.

The PS4 crossed 20 million units sold in Europe in month 37, 30 million in month 51, and 40 million in month 72. The PS4 has sold 45.86 million units to date in Europe. The PS5 is 32.69 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales in Europe.

This monthly series compares the aligned European sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo Wii.

The Wii launched in Europe in December 2006, while the Nintendo Switch launched in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

August 2023 is the 78th month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for in Europe. During the latest month, the Switch outsold the Wii by 204,810 units.

In the last 12 months, the Switch has outsold the Wii by 3.72 million units. The Switch is currently ahead of the Wii by 742,065 units.

The 78th month for the Nintendo Switch is August 2023 and for the Wii it is May 2013. The Switch has sold 33.11 million units, while the Wii sold 32.37 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold current Switch sales in month 105.

The Wii sold 33.12 million units in Europe during its lifetime. The Switch needs to sell another 0.02 million units to outsell the Wii in Europe.
