haha people didn't buy less of those systems because it had the same brand name lol. NES had no competition, SNES had Genesis. GB was on the market forever while GBA was cut off early with the DS. Wii U was a poorly thought out successor to a fad that had passed. 3DS had a gimmick that people didn't really care about and which made it launch at way too high a price, and it sacrificed the power it could have used simply to do the 3D effect, plus it had to deal with the mobile game market blowing up.

See how there are actual real reasons why those systems did worse than their predecessors, and it had nothing at all to do with the name.

No matter what the next system is called, it is likely to do worse than the Switch because the Switch is insanely popular, launched with BotW, was the first system with the hybrid concept, and Animal Crossing became a cultural moment launching right as the pandemic was starting. Those are all unique and powerful things that led to its huge success, along with other things of course. Name is going to have nothing to do with the successor selling less than the Switch. Changing the name does absolutely nothing for Nintendo, while keeping the Switch name at least gives it the brand awareness of being the direct successor to pretty much the most popular system ever.

You're trying hard, but just don't have anything to work with when attempting to argue that its gonna fail if it uses the Switch name haha.

And you will say the same thing about the Switch 2. "Uh...the Switch 2 had 1 more button than the original Switch. Thats why it failed. People dont want more buttons." Its easy to say shit in hindsight.

The fact is that if the Switch is in the name it wont be the new thing to get anymore for many people. It will just be another Switch. I dont care if the controller for the Wii U was a shit smelling cactus, it should have still done way more than 14M. People were just sick of the Wii and the name Wii U didnt help.

lol I'm not "saying shit in hindsight". I gave the actual reasons why certain systems sold less than others. All you are bringing to the table is "it had the same name". You lost this argument as soon as you began it. You're just digging yourself deeper into a nonsense argument. But you're obviously gonna stick to your failed argument of "people don't ever buy the same name twice" lol so have fun with that made up idea.

Names are important for describing what something is and building a brand. Assuming a direct successor to the Switch, the name "Switch" will continue to describe the product well and will continue with the powerful branding the current Switch as built up. It'd take a very VERY bad marketing team to decide to move away from the Switch. Keeping the Switch brand name is the one thing Nintendo doesn't even need to spend anytime thinking about, they just have to decide what goes with the brand name: "2", "Super", etc.

And you keep cherrypicking reasons as to why your arguments should be valid. All the disadvantes of the later consoles.

How about the fact that the NES had to go against a video game crash? A time when retailers in the US didnt want to sell games anymore. Kinda a big disadvantage.

How about the DS had to follow up the Gameboy brand?

How about the Wii being barely more powerful than a GC with motion controls at its core?

How about the GB not having backlit screens and worse graphics than Atari Lynx and GameGear?

You know why they did great? Because they were new experiences that didnt rely on their predecessors. A name will remind you of that. Im not saying everything is in a name, but for Nintendo it seems to be an important factor.

Making a case for GBA, it sold much more than GB year on year, but it was abandoned in favor to DS

As for SNES I don't think we can say the market was mature enough by the time to custimers understand what a hardware upgrade was meant to be. There was nothing to expect from Nintendo because it was only their second console. It sold less only due to stronger competition with Sega

Wii U was by no means a simple upgrade of Wii. Except in name it was a totally different thing. I will make a case that if it was exaclty a more powerful Wii with the same concept, design and controllers but named "Wii 2" it would have sold at least twice as much lol

And Im sure you can make a similar case for when the Switch 2 sells less.

Switch 2 will indeed sell less because the lack of novelty. Also lack of pandemic to boost sales in a period of relative software droughts which boosted the system to new highs

Still clearing 100 million mark is a given. Even if it's just a straight upgrade. There is nothing inherently wrong with straight upgrades and they were NEVER detrimental of the success of any system ever.

Even though the name confusion probably had a miniscule effect on how well WiiU did, they may still want to avoid a repeat of that, if it can be easily avoided.

Well good to know we wont have another pandemic in the next 6-8 years. Thanks Nostradamus.

A new global pandemic, so deep that the world will need to enter in a severe lockdown again for months? I doubt it will happen again so soon. The world is still recovering from Covid, any signs of a new pandemic will be followed by severe restrictions before the virus spread. Not that I believe a new virus with the same transmition rate will happen in this time anyway

Scrolling through the posts to see if anyone realised that Nintendo is a Japanese company, so how Switch 2 sounds in English isn't particularly relevant.

Two in Japanese is Nii, so "Suitchu Nii"

Im just saying Nintendo has a bigger casual audience than the other 2 consoles. Some Switch owners will just go "Another Switch? I already have one of those" If the next console is called the Switch 2 I absolutely think it will sell less than if they call it the for instance  the rumored Nintendo Focus. Even if they are both the exact same. I think with the name Focus, it will do better. Core gamers will know its the new Nintendo console and casuals will be interested in the new shiny thing.

This makes no sense. It's like saying people don't buy next versions of iPhone because they already have one. There is nothing more intuitive or easy to understand than Switch 2.

Of course, many people use consoles for as long they can. Those are the late adopts. They purchase consoles when they are either finding their consoles outdated, or there are no more new games to play or because their consoles are starting to tear apart.

The point of going to another name it to showcase a different concept or idea. If Nintendo wants to sell another idea then I'm all for a new name. But if it's just a straight upgrade then it's a no brainer calling it Switch 2.

Yeah, well thats my point. If its just another more powerful Switch with an added gimmick it wont do as well. Also Iphone has a way bigger core fanbase than Nintendo consoles has. The Wii U pretty much represents the Nintendo core gamers.
