Making a case for GBA, it sold much more than GB year on year, but it was abandoned in favor to DS

As for SNES I don't think we can say the market was mature enough by the time to custimers understand what a hardware upgrade was meant to be. There was nothing to expect from Nintendo because it was only their second console. It sold less only due to stronger competition with Sega

Wii U was by no means a simple upgrade of Wii. Except in name it was a totally different thing. I will make a case that if it was exaclty a more powerful Wii with the same concept, design and controllers but named "Wii 2" it would have sold at least twice as much lol

And Im sure you can make a similar case for when the Switch 2 sells less.

Switch 2 will indeed sell less because the lack of novelty. Also lack of pandemic to boost sales in a period of relative software droughts which boosted the system to new highs

Still clearing 100 million mark is a given. Even if it's just a straight upgrade. There is nothing inherently wrong with straight upgrades and they were NEVER detrimental of the success of any system ever.
