Physical sales of FFXVI and the large majority of big budget software in general are indeed on a downward slope, there's no doubting that.

Luckily for publishers, digital gives them an even higher percentage of revenue per purchase so with the drop physical sales being offset by a rise in digital sales, it's only more profitable for a company like Square Enix. The brick-and-mortar stores functioning as middle men will get cut out, but are they even important when it comes to game development? I don't think so.

We’re all still waiting for evidence of upward momentum.

In September 1994, the Final Fantasy series had a total of around 11.5 million cumulative sales, the overwhelmingly large majority of which were domestic sales in Japan.

11 years later, in September 2005 the Final Fantasy series had a total of 60 million cumulative sales, meaning in 11 years there were around 50 million games of the Final Fantasy series sold .

A little over 10 years later, in December 2015 the Final Fantasy series had a total of over 115 million cumulative sales, so in a little over 10 years of time there were around 55 million games of the Final Fantasy series sold.

Last month, in June 2023, it was announced that the Final Fantasy series had a total of over 180 million cumulative sales, which means in a period 7.5 years there were around 65 million games of the Final Fantasy series sold.

Would you say then, that there is upward global momentum of the Final Fantasy series, especially with the tail of FF16 and FF7R II on the horizon?

It is really great to see Switch still doing so well! Definitely my favourite console of all time.

Random question, but does anybody know when the CESA update is? I read somewhere that it was this month, but can't seem to find it.

I thought it's in August but maybe I'm mistaken.

Waoo I didn't expect that much ! It really became a worldwide saga.

I am fairly sure CESA is in May. It just depends how long someone (Chris) translates everything and readies the list to release to the public.

There is no specific date. The CESA website just says that they are releasing it in late July.

I feel like you’re changing goalposts. So the discussion isn’t about individual titles selling better? Have you looked up how many spin-offs/remakes/remasters/ports Final Fantasy gets these days compared to the 80s/90s/00s?

1987-2009, 57 releases

2010-2023, 61 releases

https://thefinalfantasy.net/games/

How is a series momentum determined? By the sales of individual titles or the total sales of a larger number of titles?

Lets say I release a game series

2023-Zorg 1000 Adventure (3 million sales)

2025-Zorg 1000 spin-off #1 (800k sales)

2027-Zorg 1000 Adventure 2 (2 million sales)

2027-Zorg 1000 spin-off #2 (500k sales)

2028-Zorg 1000 Adventure remaster (1.2 million sales)

2028-Zorg 1000 spin-off #3 (300k sales)

2023-2026, 3.8 million sales (1 mainline+1 spin-off)

2027-2028, 4 million sales (1 mainline+2 spin-offs+1 remaster)

Would this be a series in decline or upward momentum?

I think it's more like you were aiming at the wrong goal. My original statement was "Gotta love thinly veiled port begging that utterly fails to see the upward global momentum that the Final Fantasy franchise continues to have." So to me, the franchise selling 10 million more games in the past 7.5 years than it did in the prior 10 years definitely means that there is indeed upward global momentum for the franchise, so the data I provided fully backed up what I initially stated.

Zelda and Final Fantasy have basically flip flopped in Japan from 20 years ago.

Final Fantasy X destroyed Zelda: Wind Waker sales (and FF7 destroyed Ocarina of Time).

Now it's the reverse, Tears of the Kingdom is demolishing Final Fantasy XVI and BOTW destroyed FF7 Remake.

It's almost like in Japan the PS2 was massively more popular than the Gamecube, and now the Switch is massively more popular than the PS4/PS5.

Abandoning the dedicated home console was a great decision for Nintendo. They no longer have to deal with N64/Gamecube/Wii U level of flops in Japan.

Wii outsold PS3 yet FFXIII still outsold both Zelda games on Wii combined in the region, userbase was never the factor in FF outselling Zelda in Japan to further highlight this even the portable Zelda games were easily outsold by FF in the region and they're the most successful platforms in the country as XIII even outsold both DS games combined as well as nearly matching all four 3DS games by itself in the region. It comes down to appeal in the games have switched in the region.
