I rather them fund smaller start up developers like Shift up or Game science those delivered much more to the core PS fanbase for much smaller investment. If they really want to acquire why not buy the final fantasy IP or kojima instead they'll get much more out of it than spending another billion dollar for a huge publisher only to keep them multiplatform anyway like bungie to recoup the buy out. complete waste.

Square would never sell the IP, they would have to buy the whole company to get FF.

There was talks about Sony potentially buying Square Enix some years ago but it's clearly no happening, as Square keeps saying they want to spread all titles multiplatform.

There was probably a talk about SE being acquired that's before Jim decided to waste 3.5b dollar on bungie instead for his grand plan to turn the whole PS studio into a live service utopia. that really worked out so well for them as we can see.

Imagine they spent that money and got the Final fantasy, deus ex , tomb raider etc instead for as little as SE sold those titles to embracer. shame.

I would rather let Square be multiplat anyway, Sony doesn't need to own it.

But yeah, in the case of either it or Bungie, Square would be a non brainer.

Sure I rather SE/Bethesda/AB all stayed independent but we all know thats not gonna stop companies like MS gobbling them all up and if it comes down to it I'd much rather see SE with Sony before MS starts buying up everything again and wave around another 10 year contract if they want to keep former multiplatform games on PS/nintendo.

Rumor is Sony is in talks to buy Kadakawa. A media company that owns anime/manga and game studios like Fromsoft. So yay more monopoly.

i hope not. M&L Brothership was developed by Acquire, which Kadakawa has a large stake over. Could mean another very long hiatus for M&L.

Based off the reception of the most recent game, feel like this is going to be the case regardless :/

Doesn't Kadokawa have over 20+ console games in development?

I think Sony would keep mostly everything multiplatform. Maybe new IP's are PlayStation exclusive at launch.

That would be impressive considering Kadokawa only has 5 video game studios lol.

This seems more as a power play in Sony's interest in anime/manga. Because Kadokawa owns dozens of studios in those industries with an insane amount of IP.

I think I may be misquoting lol. But this is definitely a big play for anime/manga/publishing with FromSoftware being the cherry on top.

Buying Kadokawa would solidify Sony's anime/manga position and ensure Playstation's future even if Microsoft acquires one more major publisher and goes back to exclusivity.

Kadokawa and SquareEnix were the two most plausible major acquisitions from Sony. And after FromSoftware got full ownership of Elden Ring, it became a no brainer that acquiring Kadokawa is the higher priority to Sony which already owns like 12% of them. I think what they're aiming for is majority stake and not full acquisition.

I'm not sure Kadokawa would be enough to prevent disruption of their business model, if Microsoft bought another publisher like Ubisoft, and decided to go back to exclusivity. Elden Ring is the only tentpole title they have under their portfolio.

Sony would probably need Marathon or the Horizon multiplayer project to hit big at the very least.
