President Donald Trump on Tuesday abruptly walked back his directive to federal agencies to fire thousands of probationary employees, a stunning reversal that comes days after a federal judge ruled that the president’s ongoing mass firings of federal workers are probably illegal.

In a new memo delivered to the heads of all federal agencies, the Office of Personnel and Management ― the human resources agency of the federal government ― says it doesn’t actually have to comply with its previous instructions to fire all probationary employees, or people who have generally held their jobs for a year or less. Instead, per this memo, federal agencies have until Sept. 13 to come up with their own plans for reducing staff.

Trump’s walk-back means the heads of federal agencies don’t have to plow ahead with more haphazard firings of essential staff, but it’s not clear what this means for the thousands of employees who have already been fired.

The administration’s new directive comes after U.S. District Judge William Alsup last week ordered OPM to inform several federal agencies that it had no authority to direct them to carry out mass firings, and that such actions were likely illegal.

That ruling has already resulted in some federal agencies scrambling to rehire people they just fired. One of those agencies, the National Science Foundation, is currently trying to reinstate 84 employees it had fired as part of OPM’s directive. One of those 84 people told HuffPost on Monday that he and several of his colleagues learned they were getting their jobs back not from NSF, but from other coworkers and via the press.

Good news, Trump got spooked, one disaster averted, until they lay them off in September.

Ontario has cancelled its $100-million contract with Elon Musk-owned satellite internet company Starlink and will ban all United States (US)-based companies from taking part in provincial procurement as part of retaliatory measures in the North American trade war, Premier Doug Ford announced this morning.

Trump’s new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China are projected to cost U.S. households an average of $3,000 annually. Critics argue the policy functions as a tax hike on the working class, bypassing congressional approval.

Some DOGE Staffers Are Drawing Six-Figure Government Salaries | WIRED

Jeremy Lewin, one of the DOGE employees tasked with dismantling USAID, who has also played a role in DOGE’s incursions into the National Institutes of Health and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is listed as making just over $167,000 annually, WIRED has confirmed. Lewin is assigned to the Office of the Administrator within the General Services Administration.

Kyle Schutt, a software engineer at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, is listed as drawing a salary of $195,200 through GSA, where he is assigned to the Office of the Deputy Administrator. That is the maximum amount that any “General Schedule” federal employee can make annually, including bonuses. “You cannot be offered more under any circumstances,” the GSA compensation and benefits website reads.

Nate Cavanaugh, a 28-year-old tech entrepreneur who has taken a visible internal role interviewing GSA employees as part of DOGE’s work at the agency, is listed as being paid just over $120,500 per year. According to DOGE’s official website, the average GSA employee makes $128,565 and has worked at the agency for 13 years.

I agree with Ford on this.
Gotta take a strong stance until the Democratic States stand up for themselves and join the free world in isolating and choking off Vichy USA.

Democratic States may represent a minority of land, but they represent nearly 80% of the wealth productivity in the US. It's time for Western civilization to grow a pair, and put an end to this madness that festers in the US.

The US media is absolutely fucking useless, JFC. Zero pushback, full of cowards, they will help normalise this shit, before we know it we'll have Republican commentators like "Yes let invade Canada" and US Media being like "Tehee, fair enough" Lmao. At least the Russian Media know they're owned. USA is lacking severely on actual journalism, they seem to think all they're there for is to give a foghorn to bullshit but journalism is meant to educate and provide the actual facts of the matter and pushback against nonsense.

Lmfao. Starting to think this is simple stock market manipulation at this stage. We'll see if this is bullshit from Lutnick tomorrow or another case of Trump setting a fire and pretending to fix an issue he invented out of thin air, or maybe Trump was shook by the reaction. Either way I'm tired of all this monthly tariff horseshit.

This needs blasting everywhere.

“They will violate the very trade agreement that was negotiated by President Trump in his last term.”

Trump is angry about his own damn trade agreement, FFS, Lol.

Most Republicans in the USA only follow so-called conservative news media (which is really far-right propaganda networks), so proper journalism is foreign to them already. Fox News is unsurprisingly already on board with invading other countries and turning just about every bad thing into a good thing.

CNN commits the blunder of wanting to provide balanced views between Democrats and Republicans on their panels, but there's no balance between right and wrong; when you try to meet in the middle of right and wrong, you end up with wrong all the time. In that sense CNN is worse than Fox News, because CNN actually had credibility at one point, so they contribute to normalising shit.

MSNBC's Lawrence is just about the only TV host who can consistently do good journalism, such as recognizing that the USA is aligned with Russia now whereas everywhere else it's still put as a question in the room where the USA stands now. Most others on MSNBC get lost in making mountains out of molehills rather than speaking in clear and grounded terms.

BREAKING: US Commerce Secretary Lutnick has said: Trump may roll back Canada and Mexico tariffs tomorrow

— Unusual Whales (@unusualwhales.bsky.social) 4 March 2025 at 21:32

Mélanie Joly, Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, said she hasn't heard from any Americans all day. Lutnick told Fox Business that he spoke to Canadian and Mexican officials on the phone on Tuesday and that both countries told him "they'll do better."

They've gone from screaming that they'd increase tariffs if Canada responds to suddenly saying they're going to compromise and meet them half way, a little progress, Lmao. But it's more likely they're just trying to keep the stock market stable. Who the fuck knows, this admin lies every 10 minutes at this stage, it's hard to keep up with all their bullshit.

Most of our presidents have not been accelerationists in any sense. They've been the opposite, largely focused on stability instead of any kind of rapid change.

Trump is an accelerationist president who doesn't care what burns down in the change.

And if anyone still thinks otherwise, you are either ignorant or in denial.
