Forums - Nintendo - Ars Technica response to Epic's Wii is a Virus comments

I certainly agree that Epic will be just fine without the Wii and that the Wii shouldn't be their primary target, but they are certainly losing a TON of money. Imagine if they'd built a ground-up impressive Wii engine and licensed to all big third parties...

Did anyone read that full interview with Mike and IGN? He was basically cornered in to giving this kind of an opinion about the wii as the questions were along the lines...

IGN: (laughter) I know! I think the same thing! It's like, "Come on, why are you buying this system?!"

@TheBigFatJ

I disagree in saying wii gets most attention beacuse of steady flow of great games. Nintendo made a big push early this year to release 3 of the biggest wii games but without mario Kart, wi fit and Smash Brothers wii game library would be as dry as a desert in 2008 thus far(library of good games I mean). I don't know a single Wii game coming out this christmas that is getting a lot of attention at this point.

Wii gets most attention for different reasons.

That's because Nintendo doesn't hype 10 games into the future. They only hype one set of games at a time. Once Mario Kart and Wii Fit are out of the way, they'll get ready to announce their holiday releases (probably at E3). The Wii sells on current games, not future games.  Nintendo prefers not to announce things years before release.  The exception to this rule is at a console's launch...

As far as why people are buying the system, obviously to play games. The Wii outsold the PS3 and 360 combined in worldwide software this week, and with far less hardware. Like it or not, the Wii is taking over all facets of video game sales. Obviously people are turning it on more often than their PS3s and 360s. Either that, or people are buying games just to stick them on a shelf. Either way, what's it matter? The Wii sells the most hardware, the most software, and costs the least to develop for.

I'll believe it when I see it at E3. It sounds like a dumb decission to me to be quiet until 2 months before the game release.  Game announcements fuel stories which bring impressions to gaming website ads and generate websites money. If nintendo doesn't want to contribute to them, they may not be getting a lot of positive press form the gaming community... Comments like mr. Epic games dissing the Wii may become more common then...

it took them many years to develop UE3, and you want them just to make wii version just like that?

seems rathe unresonable doesn't it?

In anycase, I rather Epic spend their time and resources improving their UE3 for the PS3/360/PC, than waist resources and time making a wii engine that  will never look as good as their PS3/360/PC UE3 engine counterpart.

Nintendo doesn't waste money on worthless multi-million dollar ad campaigns because they are a fiscally conservative business.  Obviously they don't need multi-million dollar ad campaigns, and if video game sites actually meant anything, games with crappy reviews wouldn't sell so well on all systems (contrary to popular belief, this isn't limited to the Wii).

@ those who think Epic is doing this to "push technology" that's total bullshit.  Epic stopped pushing technology when they started making games on gimped consoles.  They made an engine for HD consoles for money, and no other reason.

teh Wii has teh suk grafics!11

That is basically the phrase that popped into my head reading his pure BS.

End of 2009 Predictions (Set, January 1st 2009)

Wii- 72 million   3rd Year Peak, better slate of releases

360- 37 million   Should trend down slightly after 3rd year peak

PS3- 29 million  Sales should pick up next year, 3rd year peak and price cut

Developing a new engine that'd push the Wii would cost far less than UE3; HD costs apply to engines MOST OF ALL. Also, they'd be playing in an open field on the Wii with practically no competition. You can make more money if you have 10 buyers and no competition than having 50 buyers and tons of it ( obviously the buyers are the licensees ).

Given the fact that they stated UE4 will be developed on the Microsoft's and Sony's next console (and maybe Nintendo if their hardware is similar) and then on the PC last, I agree. They're in it for the money, now. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, I'm will to bet that if the MS and Sony follows Nintendo's strategy and only marginally increase the power of their next-gen consoles and it's Nintendo that produces the ultra powerful console, Epic will still develop UE4 for MS and Sony first.

I agree.  Nothing wrong with that.  Money is what all companies ultimately want.

That said, middleware engines are far more useful for consoles than PCs anyway.  PCs are much cheaper and easier to develop for.  They don't need middleware to make a big high-graphcis game, and most PC devs have their own engines, and don't pay to license them out.  Epic is focusing on consoles because console devs are the ones who will actually pay them for their engine.  Blizzard, Id, and Valve sure as hell aren't going to.

Epic can't learn how to make better video games on the Wii. What does truly mastering the Wii mean?

Epic use cutting edge technology which is not found on the Wii, why would they try and master the Wii when they can achieve more in trying to master the PS3 and 360 and make the kind of games they always do. Cutting edge games.

I know games aren't all about graphics, it's all about being fun and using ingenuity...blah blah blah

But Epic is trying to push what is possible in a game. In terms of exploiting the hardware capabilities of powerful games consoles which they can't do on the Wii.

They have already created so much in terms of additions to the U3 engine which the Wii can't handle so if they were to create for the Wii, they would have to go backwards! ( I know one of Epics licensees is trying to port the U3 engine to Wii but it just isn't possible to run it properly due to the Wii's hardware.)

Epic doesn't make games. They make engines and tech demos for those engines.

Also, this is the same Epic that was sued by Silicon Knights because they withheld features of the U3 engine from licensees until after GoW was out. Trying to attach even a shred of dignity to them is a terrible idea.

"I mean, c'mon, Viva Pinata, a game with massive marketing, didn't sell worth a damn to the "sophisticated" 360 audience, despite near-universal praise--is that a sign that 360 owners are a bunch of casual ignoramuses that can't get their heads around a 'gardening' sim? Of course not. So let's please stop trying to micro-analyze one game out of hundreds and using it as the poster child for why good, non-1st party, games can't sell on Wii. (Everyone frequenting this site knows this is nonsense, and yet some of you just can't let it go because it's the only scab you have left to pick at after all your other "Wii will phail1!!1" straw men arguments have been put to the torch.)" - exindguy on Boom Blocks
