You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

I ran into Hugo the week before the layoffs were announced at a dessert spot a few minutes from id’s offices. Just told him that I was excited the Doom DLC and whatever id’s got cooking up next. All he said was that he was excited for everyone to see what they’ve gotten cooking next. Could just be corporate talk, but, I doubt that.

I'm actually kinda surprised that Starfield will continue.

Probably a small team working on Starfield

What I see is something like this release schedule for upcoming Bethesda games:

  • 2027 - Fallout 3 Remastered
  • 2028/29 - Elder Scrolls 6
  • 2029/30 - Fallout New Vegas Remastered
  • 2030/31 - Obsidian's Fallout
  • 2033/34/35 - Fallout 5

Good news for sure, 3 and NV remasters confirmed, confirmation that Obsidian is making a new Fallout which seems to be separate from the Bethesda made Fallout 5, which they will start full production on after TES 6 ship. Starfield not dead as well, which is cool as I think the franchise has potential, Bethesda's tech just wasn't there yet on the first game, but it reads like Creation Engine 3 should allow some of that stuff for Starfield 2, like seamless space to planet flight.

That being said, I do hope Bethesda is making organizational changes behind the scenes as we speak. They simply cannot continue on as things have been, 3 franchises but only 1 game in full production at a time. In my opinion, Bethesda needs to split into 3 teams at once, each in charge of a franchise, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, and Starfield, and those teams, supplemented by support studios, need to aim to release a Elder Scrolls, Fallout, or Starfield game every 2 years, each game getting 6 years of development. Todd Howard needs to promote and train up 3 replacement directors from within the studio, each in charge of a different franchise, and oversee their development from above. Todd is now within about 10 years of a typical retirement age, it's time he trains up his successors.

Given Todd's age and how long it takes them to make games Fallout 5 might be his last game. At least last game with him leading development.

While I am glad that the long rumored Fallout 3 remaster from the old 2021 Bethesda roadmap that came out of the ABK acquisition court docs was confirmed, as well as a Fallout NV remaster we haven't heard about before, it's a shame they didn't confirm that a Morrowind remaster was in development at the same studio that did the Oblivion remaster. That game is just begging for a remaster in the same style. The closest thing we have is that Nvidia generative AI thing that was supposed to be able to remaster Morrowind, but 3 years on and no modder has actually used it to remaster Morrowind, and by nature that would be PC only even if some modder does eventually use it.
