Summary:

  • The "Return to Xbox" she mentioned in her opening letter to the community is about the spirit of the original Xbox design team. A spirit of surprise, rebellion, and renegadism, building something that others in the gaming hardware space aren't doing.
  • Wants to make sure everyone knows she is committed to Xbox, starting with the console
  • Asha is committed to Xbox hardware and wants to protect the long-term investment that Xbox players have put into Xbox since the beginning. She will announce more on how that long-term investment will be protected soon.
  • Wants to keep releasing games for gamers wherever they play
  • Wants to reduce the artificial divide between the different devices that people want to play Xbox games on
  • Acknowledges that a lack of exclusives hurt Xbox hardware in recent years, and says everything is on the table for revisions to Xbox's strategy (including the return of some form of exclusivity) as they finalize their strategy in the coming months.
  • Asha and Booty are going on a whirlwind tour of Xbox's first party studios to hear from everyone about their thoughts on what Xbox should do as they devise their strategy for Xbox
  • They say not to expect drastic changes soon (which implies that their strategy changes will most likely be targeted at next-gen, not the remainder of this gen)
  • Booty says that Xbox's studios are built around 1st party and that is how things will remain, Xbox Game Studios could never operate like 3rd party publishers do. Xbox's studios provide feedback on features they need for their games to the hardware team when new hardware is being designed, optimize their titles for Xbox hardware more heavily than 3rd party studios do, etc.
  • Asha says they don't want any of their studios to abandon their current community to chase new communities, and that new communities will be targeted in other ways
  • Asha says she has learned 2 important things about making a great platform during her career: "the quality of the product that you deliver for the core user, and the integrity of the decisions that stand behind it. "
  • Asha on AI and fears over it's use at Xbox: "I think that with any new technology, it brings possibilities as a tool, but even more important, especially now — we need to draw lines on what we won't doThat's what I attempted to do when I shared my opening letter," she explained. "I will not flood our ecosystem with slop. We won't have careless output, we won't have derivative work. I deeply believe in the words that I shared previously there."
  • Booty on concerns of Xbox implementing a top down AI development tools requirement upon their 1st party studios: "We've got no pressure from Microsoft, there are no directives on AI coming down. Our teams are free to use any technologies that might be beneficial, whether it's helping write code or check for bugs — things more in the production pipeline. At the end of the day as Asha said, we're committed to art made by people."
  • Booty and Asha are committed to keeping all sizes of games going within the 1st party, small, medium, and blockbuster

Proof over Promise; Well I can not agree more but to proof it will takes time and I think many expect rapid changes. What would be proof?

No one should expect anything drastic till at least the end of this gen. Years and untold millions have been poured into R&D and the multiplat strategy is in full effect across all their projects.

There's no way to do a 180 anytime soon. If they do end up making any drastic changes, it would be announced closer to the launch of the next system.

Only stuff that can be changed in the interim would be anything service-related.

What you are saying isn't going to happen and believing things are going to change MS direction with the new CEO just because she said some pretty things shows some delusion.  If anything, MS would drop all hardware under the new CEO than anything else.  As a traditional console OEM, that ship has passed and it was pretty much going after the Xbox one.  Best to hope for some really good games from the teams MS have not and settle on whatever PC hardware they produce because the current direction isn't changing.

So you think they fired the two heads just to continue doing the same thing they were doing..  Yeah, that makes Sense..

I believe what I have seen from MS as a whole and if anything, if they did fire both Bond and Phil than MS probably going to drop out of the hardware business than anything else.  If you believe them putting this woman into the CEO office to go back to the old days that really doesn't make any sense in todays climate.  If anything, she is there to transition MS out of hardware period and just a placeholder until they understand what they want to do.  I believe a lot of the previous decisions were done to try to please the top brass at MS so why would anything change now.  You guys are just way to easy to jump on ever piece of rumor or BS you heard in the while and go with that when most people are just throwing stuff at the wall to see what stick.

All I can say is that doesn't match with anything we're hearing, neither from reputable journalist sources, nor the public statements and interviews that Asha and Booty are doing. So basically either Asha and Booty are lying to their own underlings at Xbox and to the public, or the plan isn't to come in and kill hardware.

If they wanted to kill Xbox hardware, they didn't need to get rid of Phil or Sarah to do it, Phil has been slowly damaging Xbox's hardware viability for years now with decision after decision that watered down it's appeal, decisions like free online play on PC but not Xbox, cheaper Gamepass on PC than on console, less and less moneyhatted timed exclusives, day one PC ports, culminating in day one PS5 ports. We've heard from reputable sources that Sarah was ordered from above, by Phil, to go ahead with the "This Is An Xbox" marketing campaign and Xbox Game Studios releases on PS5, that they knew would badly damage Xbox hardware sales. Why would Phil and Sarah suddenly do a 180 on Xbox hardware and say "you know what, we've decided that Xbox hardware needs to stay, and if you want to kill Xbox hardware, you'll have to fire us first".

I actually agree with you there to a certain extent. I can only see one of two outcomes coming from this:
Either, a) They drop the whole multiplatform nonsense or, b) They drop out of the hardware business. No inbetween.

And if for some reason they still are under the delusion that they can just have a console out there without exclusive content, then they are in for a rude awakening.

They clearly stated that they want their games to be played where gamers are. I feel like this means those games are there to stay (on other platforms), but they want to come back with some exclusivity (timed or unique content?). I think there is a way to have both (ie to have their own console and still have their games on other platforms).

I also do not think they will drop out of hardware business just yet, they will try the next generation for sure; the hybrid approach needs to be attempted first.

Well of course it doesn't match with what you are hearing because what you are hearing is just a bunch of people throwing stuff at the wall as I stated.  All you have to do is look at the CEO of MS, hear his words and see MS direction to understand where MS is going and it's not back to a traditional console.  The reason you get rid of Phil and Bond is because the direction of the company is going away from not only the hardware business but a lot of the gaming business in general which is something easily would make both Bond and Phil bounce.

I have been through enough CEO shakeups to see a very prepared statement that is geared to stall what is really going on while the company transitions away from the opposite of what they are claiming.   Everything you mentioned were decisions made because money has been shifting away from the gaming division and Xbox in general than anything else.  You see a decision and believe on the surface its just Phil taking away from you what you enjoy.  I see decisions that look like top brass saying this money sink is over.  If your profits isn't in the same place as our other portfolios than why should we continue to support you.

Anyway, this is one of those wait and see type of situations, but I am willing to bet that what we see going forward is a bigger pull back from the market then those glossy statements from the new CEO.  Its way to familiar and all too common when it comes to big business like MS.  Gaming has been a side project for MS for a while, now its going to be even more so now.
