Someone tell me in basic terms how powerful the ROG XBOX ALLY X is and if it would be worth buying now or waiting for something more powerful? Or would it make more sense to just buy this one because handheld tech isn't going to advance that quickly and this is already powerful? Like I'm not going to buy a ROG XBOX ALLY X and then a notably more powerful device releases a year later, will I? Lol.

There's been a number of Xbox games lately where I've thought to myself "This would be nice to play on a handheld"

What resolution and framerate are we talking?

As far as raw power, you're looking at a slightly more powerful Steam Deck at the most. More RAM should allow for the games to run more smoother though.

The screen is the same as the previous ROG Ally with a 1080p screen at 120hz refresh rate.

You called down the thunder, now reap the whirlwind

  • Xbox UI/UX.
  • Xbox Ergonomics.
  • Play Anywhere.
  • Game Pass.
  • Entire Library in One Place.
  • Cut Out The Extra Windows Junk.

You'd still have to enable full Windows mode to go and install the Steam/EGS launchers before they (your games on those platforms) all show up in your library it seems, but then once you've done that you can just turn off all the Windows junk again and go back into the "Xbox mode" and then have all your Steam/EGS library show up in the Xbox UI.

But their plan is to make the other launchers available inside the Xbox/Windows store itself so therefore you won't ever need to enter the full Windows mode. You just go to the store and download Steam/EGS launchers from there. Install them and download your games, then they'll show up in your Xbox UI library. Won't have to leave the "Gaming" UI/Ecosystem at all.

All this on a future Xbox console sounds so fucking good, Lol.

Is the performance stable at 60fps-120fps?

I don't know if I'd really care for anything higher than 1080p in a handheld, Lol.

I think I'd use it almost entirely as a Game Pass/Play Anywhere machine but I'd create a Steam account and go install Steam, I'm sure I'd be able to find a lot of interesting smaller titles on Steam which aren't on Xbox, and the odd cheeky Sony game

Maybe a stupid question but can you project the Rog Ally X to a TV and how is the experience?

How expensive is the ROG Xbox Ally going to be? That is what I am wondering and how well do games run on it compared to the Series S.

Yeah it is going to be expensive. If you already have a handheld, I suppose the good thing is that this Xbox UI/UX is being released to all Windows handhelds soon but the Rog Ally Xbox gets it first.

I'm curious about the battery life, Lol.

That really depends on the game. The more demanding the game, the lower the overall framerate will be. Grounded? Absolutely! Stalker 2? Not so much lol

Unless you're running a potato of a game, it would probably be best to target 60fps at the most. Mostly for it being a better target for the device to reach, but also for battery life. But of course with it being a PC, you can tweak graphical settings to help reach your desired framerate

Yes, Asus even offers their own first-party dock so you can hook the device up to a TV/Monitor. From what I've read up to this point, it's about as good of an experience as you can get. Aside from Windows being Windows I only have a Steam Deck, so I can't comment from a personal perspective.

This feels a bit like a good way to slow ease someone like myself into PC gaming too, who is a bit nervous about getting fully into PC gaming, I can't be bothered with all the building my own PC, upgrading my PC, troubleshooting my PC, etc. Devices like these which are prebuilt, powerful and cut out the fat so they're essentially simply a pure gaming device, it feels like a nice middle-ground, with a lot of things about Xbox that I love, and I can still meddle with certain PC features and slowly ease myself into them. Likewise it would be a similar case for the Series X/S successor. This could help get me get properly into PC Gaming.

I have a laptop. Maybe there will be a gaming mode for regular Windows added that makes it run more efficiently so I can use more power for games.

I think without a doubt this "Xbox UI/UX for Handhelds" will eventually come to PC/Laptops devices in the future too, it obviously won't be exactly the same as the Handheld one because that's made for Handhelds, Lol. But I think they'll do something for PC/Laptops as well. But I think that'll come alongside the Series X/S successor which will essentially be a PC/Xbox hybrid.
