Xbox Live Gold
Game Pass Console
Game Pass Ultimate
Game Pass PC

Now Becomes.

Game Pass Core
Game Pass Console
Game Pass Ultimate
Game Pass PC

The only difference? Xbox Live Gold is now a Game Pass catalogue instead of having GWG.

Could cause confusion but it's literally the exact same situation as today, aside from the Game Pass catalogue replacing GWG.

Feels like a rebranding change more than anything, an effort to kill XBL for good and go all in on their Game Pass marketing, hope that some will finally convert over to Game Pass Ultimate when being exposed to the Game Pass ecosystem, you'd be surprised how many "casuals" still don't have a clue what Game Pass is or the value it offers.

Or millions will continue to play the same 2 titles they need Xbox Live Gold for and will continue to ignore the Game Pass offering

Ok see I was confused as I was subbed to Ultimate for so long, I always assumed console included live lmao.

Nothing changed, Ryuu is right.

Among Us, Descenders, Dishonored 2, DOOM Eternal, Fable Anniversary, Fallout 4, Fallout 76, Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, Grounded, Halo 5: Guardians, Halo Wars 2, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Human Fall Flat, INSIDE, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Psychonauts 2, State of Decay 2, Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited. (MS says this list will grow in the coming months)

I know they said more will be added but it's so strange that Minecraft or Halo Infinite isn't on this list.

Also as someone subbed to gampeass Ultimate sucks to see that we're no longer getting the xbox live games every month anylonger. I know the offering has been bad for awhile now but some great games have been given out through xbox live over the years and kinda sucks to see it go.

That has always been the case though, nothing has changed about the other tiers. I only think it may cause some confusion now that the console tier doesn't have Xbox Live Gold but the Core tier and Ultimate tier do.

Guess the Console tier can be sort of for people who don't play online games. If you play online right now, you either have Xbox Live Gold because you don't care, or know about Game Pass (a lot of my family members on the latter...) or you sub to Game Pass Ultimate because you like Game Pass and also play online.

All they're really doing here is rebranding Xbox Live Gold into Game Pass so it's the same 4 tiers as always, except they're also swapping out GWG with a catalogue of older Game Pass titles that will grow over time. Feels more like an effort to kill all reference to Xbox Live and then hope overtime folk upgrade to Ultimate, Lol.

So they get all those Xbox Live Gold suckers who won't still sub to Game Pass into the ecosystem, maybe they notice these free games, maybe they want more, maybe they decide to upgrade to Ultimate. I'll say that Microsoft's mass consumer marketing of Game Pass is still pretty poor, I find myself having to explain Game Pass to family members a lot who are still on only XBLG, Lol.

Yea I know, it technically nothing changes, but it's shit optics. On paper it may be a simple rebrand, but in effect, you're telling us Gold is gone - which implies less emphasis on the simple NECESSITY of online play (and let's be fucking clear, it is absolute a necessity) - while simultaneously still withholding what gold was all about to any console user who wants more than the bare minimum, but cares fuck all about PC.

Gold the name has gone. Xbox Live still exists. I do concede it might be confusing. But literally nothing is changing from a structural POV, it feels weird to be all of a sudden mad about something which has been the case since Game Pass existed.

Ton of people still on Xbox Live Gold only care for the online play, nothing is changing for them, not even the price, some of them might not even notice a difference xD. Some of them may explore Game Pass more now though.

Only change is GWG is finally getting a bullet, which everyone hated in recent history anyway and Tbh I doubt it was taken advantage of, I'd make a guess that the vast majority of XBLG subscribers don't even touch GWG cause there's so many people who just play the same few titles every year and need Xbox Live for them.

Oh and Game Pass Console still has the advantage of Day One releases over Game Pass Core.

I'm annoyed, cus I WANT a structural change, and I was really hoping the when Gold eventually "went away," we'd get one. I don't wanna be forced into Ultimate just to get GP and online play. I don't need or want GP on PC. CLEARLY MS knows damn well PC users don't need or want console GP, cus they're not making even slightest of efforts to entice them. They have literally all the benefits for one low price. Why do I, as the costumer that actually already gave you more up front money by buying your console, need to have more roadblocks put in my way?

Make the Ultimate package more attractive some other way. Give it the perk of early access to your first party games. We all know that shit does gang busters. Cool. Hell, up the price on it after for all I care. I'll probably go buy it. But for fucks sake, give console players an OPTION of GP and fucking online that doesn't automatically force me into a plan that otherwise involves nothing I care about.

Does someone wanna ask Phil why console gamepass is $1 more than PC Gamepass, on top of us being forced to buy the core gamepass to play online? Basically forced to buy gamepass ult (which I have) but this shit makes no sense. Why not just include online in Console GP and have this core shit priced lower lol or even better match PC and make online gaming free since it's the same ecosystem and servers...

It's anecdotal but I think Game Pass still isn't in the general consumer mindset yet and it's hard to market to those guys, the amount of times I've had to explain to family members who are subbed to Xbox Live Gold what Game Pass is...and even though they seem impressed by it, they still stick with only Xbox Live Gold.

They'll still be millions who don't give a shit about Game Pass of course, who only play the same few titles every year and those titles are literally the only reason they have Xbox Live Gold, absolutely nothing will change for those guys, they probably won't even notice a change, Lol. But there's also probably going to be a portion who will finally take notice of Game Pass when they have a bunch of free titles popping up in their library and then want more.

And meanwhile Microsoft gets to brag about Game Pass subscribers increasing, Lmao. Game Pass subs are about to balloon but I'm pretty sure a lot in the Core tab, at least in the initial stages, still won't give a shit about Game Pass (yet) based on anecdotal evidence, but they're under the Game Pass label now and Microsoft will hope some will upgrade to Ultimate later down the line if they want hundreds more titles and day one releases.

I would like clarification on when titles will enter Core, it looks like 80% 1st party with the odd 3rd party, I remember one leak said it would be 1st parties being added at least 6 months after their initial release, it's definitely not going to be day one, I just wonder what sort of timeframe we're looking at.

  • Game Pass Core = Care for Multiplayer, Indifferent/Don't Care for Game Pass or Don't Mind Waiting for Releases.
  • Game Pass Console = Don't Care for Multiplayer + Want Day One Releases.
  • Game Pass Ultimate = Care for Multiplayer + Want Day One Releases.

IMO this is a missed opportunity, they should have just ended the gold annual pricing earlier and set it to 4.99/month (Same as annual pricing /12) (Unlike their previous failed attempt at just canceling the annual pricing and leaving it at 9.99) then rise it by 1$ at the same time as the other tier making 5.99$.

Adding all Game Pass titles (at least for 1st party) but with ads (like the rumored tier a while ago) and (1-6) months delay.

It should have instead been named "Live Pass".

They should have also added multiplayer in the standard Game Pass console so that all their offering have live gold benefits but just killed GwG entirely.

now it would have been
Live Pass(ads supported game pass with release delay): 5.99
Game Pass Console: 10.99
Game Pass PC: 10.99
Game Pass Ultimate: 16.99

I agree that the price differences between Console Game Pass and PC Game Pass should be adjusted but Core Game Pass is literally the exact same price as Xbox Live Gold, nobody is being forced into anything, nothing is changing for most people, Lol.

I'm so baffled by this angry reaction to what is simply a rebranding, my issue is, while I do agree with these complaints, they've been complaints which have existed for years now and only now people are complaining about them. The rebranding when judged on its own seems like (mostly) a good thing to me, with a few adjustments to be made.

At worst, nothing has changed for the consumer, aside from they're losing GWG but in exchange for a collection of 25+ older titles, which will be expanded to overtime (maybe monthly?). For new audiences, this might actually provide more value than the current GWG which is all ancient titles that nobody cared for.

If this was simply called "Xbox Live Core" and instead GWG was swapped for a catalogue of old 1st party titles, would this anger still be the same? Lol. Because that is essentially what this is.
