PS5 Sales Top 2 Million in the UK

The PlayStation 5 has now sold over two million units in the UK, according to GfK data reported by GamesIndsutry.

The PS5 is the fourth fastest-selling home console to reach the milestone, tying the PS3 with 98 weeks. The Wii was the fastest at 57 weeks, followed by the PlayStation 2 at 60 weeks and the PlayStation 4 in 75 weeks.

The Xbox One took 104 weeks to sell two million units, the Xbox 360 110 weeks, the original PlayStation 114 weeks, the Nintendo Switch 140 weeks, and the original Xbox 162 weeks.

"Given the stock problems surrounding PS5 it is fair to say it would have easily outpaced PS3 to 2m units," says GfK boss Dorian Bloch. "One thing that is clear, the significantly higher price of PS5 has not hindered sales, with consumers willing to pay the £105 premium that is shown on the average price of both consoles over this 2m unit period. PS5 has delivered the highest revenue for any console at two million units.

"Xbox One took 104 weeks to reach two million, exactly two years, and Xbox 360 took 110 weeks, which was 2.12 years. Although the Xbox 360 was slower to this mark than Xbox One, Xbox 360 overtook Xbox One after three years and remains Microsoft biggest install, with around nine million in the UK.

"The Switch took a relatively long time to reach two million units sold at 2.69 years. However, with the introduction of Switch Lite after 2.5 years and the subsequent massive boost the console received after the COVID-19 Lockdown, plus the fact that system-seller Zelda launches next year, means the Switch is set to add decent numbers to the install base."

VGChartz had the PS5 crossing 2 million in the UK in week 99, while this report said week 98. So I went ahead and adjusted our PS5 figures (up ~4K) to have it match.

Off by one week? This clearly proves the tracking is worthless. Really while it's unfortunate it's been held back enough to tie with the PS3 so far it'll move ahead of it forever going forward and I'm curious to see where Xbox Series is gonna land since it should reach it soon. Also the discrepancy between the Wii and Switch is interesting with how much more the latter is gonna sell worldwide.

The UK is an anomaly for the Switch as while it is doing well it is relatively not doing crazy numbers like we have seen in North America or Japan.

VGChartz estimates have the Xbox Series X|S at 1.54M units as of October 1 in the UK. If sales are flat year-over-year for the rest of 2022 it wouldn't reach 2M sold until early 2023. Or not until at least like week 115-120. If sales are up year-over-year it will likely be around when the Xbox 360 reached 2M. Mind this is if the VGChartz estimates for the Xbox Series X|S in the UK are as spot on as they are for PS5.

The PS5 should cross the same mark in Japan over the next few weeks.

Is the UK also an anomaly for the Xbox Series selling slower than the Xbox One so far?

Correct. Though the Xbox Series X|S has actually been tracking behind the Xbox One in the US as well. This is mainly due to the shortages earlier on. The Xbox Series X|S is less than 200K behind the Xbox One in the US now. The Xbox Series X|S did launch in the majority of the world, while the Xbox One only launched in like 12 countries and didn't release in a lot of the world until nearly a year later. Plus there were no Xbox One shortages.
