Forums - Gaming - PS3's power locked away, says Free Radical

Let me tell you a story of a powerful console, one who had many processors and could do amazing things competitors could not. Unfortunatly, it was a very complex console that was hard to develop for. Because of this, the true power of the console was never fully tapped, except in some cancelled late life projects. Meanwhile, a less powerful competitor was far easier to develop for, and saw hundreds more titles - games that would go down as some of the greatest in history. This little console was easier to develop for, and this accounted for its success, not power. This little console was the Playstation, and its slightly more powerful competitor was the Saturn.

Thats one of the main arguments of the retroactive history made by the antisoniers ..."the Saturn was more powerful that the PSX but it was more difficult to program " .Wrong .The Playstation was cosiderably more powerful that the Saturn .What everybody does to make the comparision is to just add the power of the two Hitachi processors of the Saturn and put it up against the Playstation main CPU .Thing is ,the PSX had a graphic chip specialized in 3d graphics and the Saturn had none .The graphic chip of the PSX is absolutely ignored by most fanboys .Thats why all the 3d games were way better on the PSX .

You only have to look at games for both consoles to see wich one was better ;Tomb Raider (original of the Saturn ) ,Grandia (original of the Saturn ) ,Resident Evil ,Wipeout ...in all the games the PSX has quite a edge over the Saturn .The Saturn only was comparable or even better in the 2d games specially with its memory boost cartridge .

Just wondering : did anyone remember a console generation where the most powerfull machine was the "winner" ? - Master System vs NES ? - Neo Geo vs SNES and Genesis ? - N64 versus PS1 ou Saturn ? - Xbox versus PS2 or the GC ? - Gamegear versus GB ? - PSP vs DS ? Or simply remember the last gen. The Xbox was way more powerfull than PS2 but most of cross titles were barely optimized to use it and the few games that really used that power weren't enough to make the difference. what's make ppl think it will be different today ? Unless you've got a really significant gap (which in PS3 case is yet to be seen), it doesn't matter that much. What the PS3 need the most currently isen't good looking games, but simply good exclusive games, which it lacks.

Most powerful consoles never won, that's an historic fact. (2600, NES, PS1, PS2), ok that's just an historic fact and things can change, but I doubt the PS3 will be an exception... power is not key, great games/ideas sell systems. And the BR in the PS3 is not as important as was the DVD on the PS2 (the DVD made the PS2 the winner).

The significant difference between the DVD in PS2 and Blu-Ray in PS3 was that the DVD was an already established market and many people did not yet have their own DVD player, it was a win win. Blu-Ray however is a market Sony and their constituates are trying to create for the 10% of the consumer market who has HD TVs. PS2 was the ideal trendsetter of Reverse Compatibility, the Ps3 needs fucking adaptors to play PS1 or Ps2 games and even then isn't 100% reverse compatible, and in Europe, they took the chip out altogether.

If you have played Panzer Dragoon Saga you wont be saying the samething, thats one game sega pushed the saturn's full limit. one more thing I think the rating on saturn grandia version is better than psx, the graphic is better too.

Show me the money. Until there is a PS3 game with super mind blowing visuals, the power of the PS3 is just talk.

Wait until REAL games. Wait until THIS game. Wait until THAT game. WAIT WAIT WAIT. I don't wanna wait... But when the time comes it better be fuggin good and it better blow me away.

i remember last year for the 360 there were so many people questioning the 360 and its graphics capapabilities... so many games looked like it could be on the original xbox people... so many people complained...and dont say yal didnt because yal did... 360 owners had to WAIT.  for GEARS OF WAR... 360 owners had to WAIT for RAinbow Six VEgas... they had to wait for lost planet for crackdown.. games that obviously were better graphically... you people and not just ORigin need to stop being hypocrits... seriously... as soon as people say wait in terms of the ps3 you bash but with any other system its okay.. yea okay good logic idiots

The 360 wasn't competing with another Next-Gen console at the time, so they had no choice but to wait. Now, with the PS3 competing against both the Wii and the 360, Sony doesn't have the luxury of saying "wait" anymore. That's the way it is. But some people shall wait, and I'm sure the wait will be worth it.

But when individuals
try to construe "locked away" power in the PS3 as negative, well that's just irresponsible and silly. Wait until the REAL games come out to judge - the games Sony is touting for this winter and next spring. Then the debates may begin on whether this console is worth the dough. Yeah, it's a ten-year console supposedly, but a year and a half to two years is a good starting point to judge the console's potential.

You get it completly backwards. A plattform that's make it difficult to develop for isr first of all one thing: expensive for the development companies.

No sane devewloper I know enjoys working on a difficult plattforms, because the work simply never stops. There are ALWAYS possible changes in the structure of your program or possible features that could be implemented if they don't have to fight unstructered APIs or try to release some parts of a "locked" power. And these ideas could improve the game much more than 5% more power.

There are simply two possibilities: Either he is a masochist, or he is on an advertisment campaign for the PS-3.

That's not necessarily true.  There are many sane developers out there that enjoy a challenge and want to be the first or best at taking advantage of a new program/coding style.  They are your hardcore developers that really get motivated when given a challenge.  Sure, it's not easy at first, but when they get it down and working at it's best, can they ever create a heck of a game or program.

My pokemon brings all the nerds to the yard. And they're like, "You wanna trade cards?" Damn right, I wanna trade cards. I'll trade this, but not my charizard.

to me any argument about the systems power specs is IRRELEVANT unless there is a game that : 1. can show it running (forget pretty still pics) 2. that blows my mind when i play it. all the talk about what it can or can't do is completely unfounded because as of TODAY, MAY 29, 2007 there are no games out that I personally feel are showing the ps3 power grip. sure there are a ton of OTHER features that the ps3 is offering that already put it as a media center above and beyond the wii and 360. but right now there simply are no games. and my primary interest in buying a gaming console is to play decent games. i could care less if you can see the sweat follicules on Shaqs hairline in a NBA game still pic screen shot. I'm concerned with how IT PLAYS. And the only enticing game that is piquing my curiosity in Ps3 is MGS4. And personally that's not worth a $700+ price tag.
