Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which game system is benefiting the most from the chip shortages?

Who does this situation benefit the most?

PS5 2 10.53%
PS4 0 0%
Switch 12 63.16%
Xbox Series 4 21.05%
PC 1 5.26%
Steam Deck 0 0%

My faint understanding on the chip shortage is that China isn’t able to produce the CPU’s at a fast rate like they used to do. So gaming systems aren’t being produced to meet customer demand.

I believe PlayStation is suffering the most in this situation. Consumer demand for the PS5 is really high across the globe. Customers have to pay around $1000 for a system or buy something else!

Switch is in a pretty good place with so many systems already in homes. Developers are successfully selling software on it.

Xbox Series is the only powerhouse that you can buy right now at a decent price. If it weren’t for the shortages, Xbox Series would probably be much further behind PS5. As it stands, they are pretty close to each other in sales.

I don’t have any opinions on PS4 or Steam Deck as of right now. What are your thoughts, which gaming system is hindered the least or helped the most by this situation?

Around the Network

Series S > Switch > PC > PS4 > SteamDeck = Series X > PS5 > PS5DE.

I'd say Xbox is the only of the big three that even can benefit from it.

Generally speaking it should be negative for everybody that production is slowed down, but on the other hand when the production of both new systems is slowed, it would always hit the one with the highest global demand (PS5) the hardest since it evens the scales to some degree, which is where Xbox has some potential to actually benefit by getting more market share. On top of that they also have the Series S, which isn't impacted to the same degree as the other new systems and therefore can also strengthen their market share because it's more readily available.

Nintendo isn't really in direct competition with the others, so even if they're in the best place atm of all three that doesn't necessarily mean they're benefitting. I certainly don't think they would be selling less systems if there wasn't a chip shortage, it's not like the pandemic were people are gaming more because of it.

Major Switch Titles Launch Aligned

2022 predictions:

  • Switch - 24m
  • PS5 - 15.5m
  • Xbox Series - 10m

Switch and PC, followed by Xbox. The one this hurts the most is obv. Sony.

At least over here, the Switch. I've yet to see a single PS5 on stores, and people are still asking for them. There aren't XBox XS either, but I haven't heard anyone ask for one. Switch are on demand and readily available.

You know it deserves the GOTY.
