Forums - Sales - Lazard Analyst: Wii to sell 8.5 Million for 2008 in the US

I think his DS estimate is still on the low side, as there is still a lot of room for growth in the US market.

Lazard Capital Markets analyst Colin Sebastian has issued a new research note raising projections for the growth of the U.S. video game industry this year. "Based on healthy year-to-date industry sales (software +40% in 1Q) and increasing visibility into a strong product release schedule over the remainder of the year, we expect software sales growth of ~17% in 2008, an increase from our original estimate of ~13% growth. As part of our model update, we are also increasing unit sales projections for Nintendo hardware (Wii and DS) and Sony's PS3," he said.

"We note that solid hardware unit sales (2.5 million units alone in March), steady TIE ratios (attach rates), and brisk sell-through of new software releases support our revised growth estimate," he added. Sebastian now expects the Wii to sell through 8.5 million units in 2008 (up from his previous 6.5 million estimate), while he believes the PS3 will sell 4.7 million units (up from 4.5 million). He also raised his DS sales estimate from 5.9 million to 6.4 million and his PS2 estimate from 2.5 million to 3.0 million. His PSP and Xbox 360 estimates remain unchanged at 3.8 million and 4.8 million, respectively.

While 2007 saw explosive growth and 2008 appears on track for similarly huge growth, Sebastian foresees a slight slowdown in the years ahead. "At this point, we continue to expect low single digit software sales growth in 2009 and 2010 for traditional console, handheld and PC game sales," he said.

Hmm, I'm not sure if it can top 10 million but I think it will be close... oh wait, this is USA only, so yeah 8.5 seems good.

Wow, a 2 million increase for Wii for one year. That's huge. Depending on what Nintendo has in store for the 2nd half of 2008, they may very well hit 10 million Wii units in 2008.

Hi there.

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Video_Game_Sales - A wiki for video game sales figures

Yup its possible it might even do better than that. Figuring if Nintendo makes enough Wii units they might surpass that expectation and hit 10 million.

Remember Wii Fit has not released for the Wii in America yet.

Once that releases we can expect unbelieveable hardware numbers for the Wii those months.

Wii first 15 weeks in USA - 1,73 mln.
SO it`s around 125-150k per week, unless Nintendo finally will release enough wii in USA, the number will go till 200-250k.
200k in 30 weeks = 6 mln.
250k in 30 weeks = 7.5 mln.
Though, after supplies meet demant, sales can go down..
so it will be interesting to see.
No to mention, that during Christmas during last 6 weeks, it possible to sell over 2-3 mln. consoles. =)

Every 5 seconds on earth one child dies from hunger...

2009.04.30 - PS3 will OUTSELL x360 atleast by the middle of 2010. Japan+Europe > NA.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Wow. That wasn't that bad. Just eliminate the thing about sales going down once demand is met (since there's nothing wrong with being no longer sold out, it's not like sales are just going to plummet) and it's perfect.

I suppose this is US only, so NA could be a bit higher, so I think I agree with his predictions. Not sure if the DS is a bit low, since I don't know what it sold last year, and I don't know what big games are coming this year to boost sales... So I'll just say that his seems perfectly reasonable.

seems about right to me

With the supply increase, anybody wanna change their meanderings? Patcher...er, I mean Crazzy?

I don't need your console war.

You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
