Forums - Politics Discussion - Russia and Ukraine flashpoint

At the end of Cold War, I believe most NATO countries cut back on their defense spending - it was called the "peace dividend" at the time, and the USA under Pres. Clinton did the exact same thing. For the USA, the defense cuts ended on Sept. 11, 2001. Which is when we realized we were at war with terrorism.

Expelling Russia from Ukraine is not possible because we would have to empty our ammunition stores of all kinds. For example, just to recover Crimea, the USA and Europe would have to hand over more than half of their stock of precision rockets. And then we have nothing left to deter China and the war in that area begins.

1. What info do you have, in which you can say with confidence that expelling Russia from Ukraine would be that difficult?

2. China invading Taiwan is not imminent.  It could happen, but not soon, and most likely much later this decade, if it ever happens.  You can bet China is watching what happens with Russia's war in Ukraine.

I read polish analysts.

Attacking is 100 times more difficult than defending.

That terrain is a nightmare for the attacker.

PS: I don't come here to discuss China vs Taiwan.

1. What possible future China war are you alluding to? If it doesn't involve Taiwan, then with who do you believe it will?

2. Maybe, just maybe, consider that your sources on military strategy/tactics might be ill-informed.  This war has ushered in the advent of drone warfare.  War has now forever been changed.

What I see is that you are the one who is misinformed.

Kills me inside when Ukraine says "we don’t ask the US and other partners to fight for us. We don’t ask for their boots on the ground. The only thing we ask for is sufficient support" and it feels like Ukraine doesn't even get that.

In an interview with my country's former chief of defense staff, he said that we were one step away from going to war with Russia because we Europeans are more concerned about the Russian threat than about China. But Ukraine held on. And the operation was ruled out.

The only thing Putin has done well was not winning the war. Because if he had won it, then he would have war with us.

Maybe Poland would have sent troops into Ukraine if it got that dire. Have my doubts that Western Europe and America would follow them after everything I've seen, America + Germany very much expected Ukraine to fall in days and tried to evacuate Zelenskyy. Western Europe + America doesn't realise we're already at war with Russia, it may not be a conventional one where Russia is firing bullets at us, it's more of a hybrid one but this pathetic weakness on display by those in America and Western Europe will slowly walk us into a conventional one.

There's no excuse for the restrictions on Ukraine, there's no excuse for Germany's Taurus position and some European countries CAN send a lot more than they are and do a lot more than they are, if it is true that China poses no threat to Europe and only Russia does then logic says we should send Ukraine whatever they need to defeat Russia even if it makes us a little vulnerable because at the end of the day if Russia is defeated, it won't matter if we're a little vulnerable. Some countries realise that, such as those in the Nordics, Baltics, Eastern Europe. Those in Western Europe don't.

460km and won't be allowed to fire into Russia, Lol.

Also, the UK could just send Ukraine the 500km variant of Storm Shadow.

Another new missile to hit targets that Ukraine can already hit...
