Forums - Gaming - GTAV vs. MK8 Sales

Which per console per year average will be higher?

Grand Theft Auto 5 4 23.53%

Mariokart 8 13 76.47%

Total:17

With the announcement of MK8D getting DOUBLE the amount of racetracks and support through the end of 2023, and with GTAV still chugging along, I thought it would be interesting to compare these two games. Obviously lifetime sales GTAV wins no contest, but when you look at the per device averages per year, things get more interesting!

GTA V has been out roughly 9 years and sold 160,000,000+ copies.

MK8 has been out 8 years and sold 51,810,000+ copies.

GTA V has released on 5 devices (PS3, PS4, XB360, XBOne, and PC).

MK8 has released on 2 devices.

The average of GTA V per year across all systems is 17.78 million a year.

The average of MK8 per year across all systems is 6.48 million a year.

But this is where it gets interesting...

The average of GTA V per system per year is 3.55 million.

The average of MK8 per system per year is 3.24 million.

And that is a fun comparison worth keeping our eyes on in the coming years. Since MK9 is without a doubt coming after 2023 now, and probably GTA6 as well, this will be a fun thing to track for the next (at least) year and 10 months!

It's weird how rock star hasn't ported GTA V to the Switch even though it's more powerful than PS3/360 which had GTA V.

PC Specs: CPU: 7800X3D || GPU: Strix 4090 || RAM: 32GB DDR5 6000 || Main SSD: WD 2TB SN850

But GTA V isn't available on PS5 and Xbox Series yet.

My apologies, I honestly didn't know that! I will change it to just 5 devices for now and re-adjust the numbers.

The race is even closer now, with GTA V in the lead, but still, close races are fun!

To be frank, now that Rockstar has truly revealed the existence of GTAVI, I wonder how this will impact the sells of V in the future.

With MK8DX going full engine mode, I feel like MK8DX could legitimately reduce the discrepency between both on yearly sales.

Well, the GTAV XBS and PS5 releases will sell millions, plus it will probably renew interest in the game for the PC crowd as well. If it comes to Gamepass that could hurt sales potential since MK8 has no chance of coming to a subscription service.

Will be interesting to see if MK8 can catch up or if GTA V will hold the lead by 2024.

I think that this year will be by far the best year for MK8. In 2020 it sold a bit over 10mil, in 2021 a bit below 10mil. I think because of the DLC sales will not only go up again, it'll move 15mil copies this year and catch up to GTA V in this comparison significantly.

Idk who'll win but I put my eggs in the MK8 bascet.

It won't. People will still buy it by the millions. You'd think it would reach total market saturation at some point.

Whenever it does, they put it out on a new console and people buy it again. Never underestimate the appeal of having only one of those new-fangled TV boxes hooked up.

This is pointless, if GTA 5 was launched only on xbox 360, then everyone would just purchase a 360, xbox one or series S/X to play it, it would have sold almost the same. If it had launched only on ps4, sales for ps4 would have been way more, most people would just get a ps4 for it. The game would sell a lot no matter what.

With that said, Mario kart 8 would sell way more if it was on other platforms, so I think it would have sold at least 100 million if it was on all platforms.

It isn't something to underestimate sure and that's why the sell numbers for these two versions will be interesting.

Though if we're being honest, since the two machines have back. comp. integrated do people have actually reasons to double or even triple dip this time ?

Honestly, that probably depends on how much of an upgrade it may be for tech folks like us. Some people sell their old console to buy the new one and will get the new version for that reason. Lots of nuance to why this game has sold so well.
