Forums - Nintendo Discussion - The new Dock that comes with the OLED Switch can technically output 4K 60hz

I think Don's point was the old dock could output 4k/30 and it meant nothing so why would 4K/60 change their outlook.

It probably doesn't mean anything functionally, at least not right now. My point was mostly just that there is a difference and it was updated for a reason. We just really don't know what that reason is.

True, it could be a few things that they have plans for, or may well be a supply chain thing in that it became cheaper and easier to procure .

That's honestly what I think right now. If this is true though it makes me wonder whether or not new regular Switch models will come with a dock with 2.0, or if they will continue ordering bulk 1.4's for that model.

Sure, but for me it still makes me wonder.....why? Why would Nintendo even bother making the upgrade from HDMI 1.4 to 2.0 in this new dock? What benefit are they hoping to have here with a Switch that has the exact same internals as the previous model? Surely it would've been cheaper if they just used the exact same previous dock and they wouldn't have had to add a "Update Dock" feature built directly into the Switch's firmware.

I'm guessing it's for future plans of some sort.

The most likely answer is what was given, that at a certain point in time the old tech becomes more expensive to procure then the new one, so even if the upgrade is meaningless they do it anyway just to cut costs.

It's not just the HDMI that matters, there's also the USB-C connection. Is there enough bandwidth there for 4k60 video, while charging, USB peripherals in the dock and the new ethernet port? If it's USB 3.2... maaaaybe.

But honestly this means nothing. At most you may be able to use a future "switch 2" or "switch pro" in this dock and get 4k output still.

Or as someone else said, at most, if the HW is capable (I believe it is) and enabled, they could stream Youtube, Netflix and the like in 4k.
