In a sense I'm planning to go with all 3 this gen. Just picked up a Switch, planning to get a PS5 later this year, and I have a fairly capable PC to play Microsoft games (along with PC exclusives)

This is the best possible situation, in my opinion, although (sadly) I don't have any of their current consoles yet. In a hypothetical scenario where money was not a problem for me, I'd buy first a PS5 and an Xbox Series X (or their respective revisions, depending on when this would be happening and if those would ditch backwards compatibility or not), and wait for Nintendo to announce the Switch succesor, if it wasn't announced already: if the succesor is backwards compatible, I'd buy that; if not, I'd buy whatever model of Switch I thought would fit me better at that moment in time.
So yeah, since every console has content I'd like to play, I can say I'm happy that there's love for everyone - my hypothetical wallet isn't, however.

I've owned almost every major piece of gaming hardware, when it was current, since Atari 2600. I don't plan to start skipping stuff now. I don't yet own a PS5, but I'll probably get one in a couple of years.
With that said, I have a business and a kid, and my gaming time is limited. It is becoming harder to justify the investment in multiple platforms. Hopefully, my son will be into gaming, giving me further justification to spend money on gaming stuff.

Currently in my house:
* 2x Xbox Series X consoles.
* High-End PC.
* Playstation 5.
* Two Nintendo Switch consoles.
With all this hardware, I find I don't game as much as I used to... And I still gravitate towards my PC anyway.

Owning all major consoles has always been the way to go. Even going back to the 16-bit era, that was your best bet. But I will say this: the love-fest between industry leaders today is definitely more boring in general. Back in the day, when you had ads where Sega was doing what Nintendon't, Sony was clay-shooting N64 consoles and Crash was calling out Plumber Boy outside Nintendo of America's headquarters with a megaphone, everything was a lot more interesting and entertaining.

I don't know. Look at Kevin Butler. People loved that character, and that was well into the twenty-first century.
I don't think it's a result of times changing so much as it is the people in charge thinking it would benefit them to appear as if they're on one big, loving team. Sort of like, hey... if we do this, no one gets left behind and we all reap the rewards sort of thing.
I just don’t see the point of owning consoles anymore. My Pc is 10 years old and it plays Red Dead 2. Pc has everything I like about Xbox. My relationship to Nintendo was tainted. Never used PlayStation except to experiment.
Pc is enough.

Nintendo and Sony. I have a Steam library, but haven't really used it at all since 2017.
