Note: in before, this is about insects, not glitches.

So I was writing a post in the humble abode thread, but I like bugs (specially arachnids) and I was starting to feel curious about else's experiences with them, so I just decided to turn it into a new thread, where you can tell all your "buggy" experiences. Mine is what follows:

I was bitten by a centipede the other night, although it didn't inject me any poison, I believe.

How did that happen? Well, summers where I live are hot and there are lots of mosquitoes, so I usually place a mattress on a roof terrace that we have here and sleep under the night sky, covered in a blanket or two that protect me both from the fresh night air and the mosquitoes. However, this doesn't come without risks, because sleeping here makes me more exposed to other bugs, which sometimes climb the walls and decide that my mattress is a nice place to hunt or hide. And that's what happened the other night: I woke up from a sudden pain near my elbow and immediately saw a big, long insect shaking its body frantically while running to hide under the blanket: I probably made some move while I was sleeping and touched the centipede, so it felt slightly in danger and therefore bit me a little (just as a warning, I guess).

This is not the first time that a dangerous bug appears on my improvised bed: a couple of summers ago, a scorpion was standing on one of its sides when I woke up - not too far from where my face was. It didn't sting me, however, and I have to say that I've been lucky with scorpions my whole life, because I've been really close to them in not so few occasions and they've never stung me: when I was a child, I was once lying down on the floor and I saw a scorpion just a couple of centimeters away from my head and walking fast towards me; another time, also as a child, I had one climbing my leg, but I felt it before I saw it, so the first thing I instinctively did was shaking my leg - only then I looked to the ground and saw what was causing the tickles; and not too long ago, I was in my bare feet and I almost stepped on one that was walking very near me. These are only a few examples (the closest), but I've had a lot more encounters with scorpions throughout my life, and the luck comes from the fact that this species of scorpion, while not the most dangerous in the world (and therefore not lethal most of times), is not one you want to be stung by either.

So what about you? Which are your closer experiences with bugs? Do you like them? Do you hate them? Are you scared of them?

But many of them scare me

I came back home and there was a stupid cicada lying down right in front of my door and not any of my neighbors. I knew it wasn't dead, it had to get there somehow, but it was in a dead position. I had to kick it like a soccer ball and it went pretty far but then it flapped its wings and and made cicada noises and tried to recover.

Kids also freak out when a suzumebachi comes in, rightfully so. I think since I am sensitive to bee venom, they might be able to kill me. Teachers even have a designated weapon for the bugs.

A few months ago I had a run in with a few giant roaches. I was boiling water, and when I brought the water to the sink to drain, there was a massive roach in the sink and I freaked and dropped all the boiling water on it. It was stunned by it but not dead so I finished it with some dish soap. Took a picture, because I couldn't believe the size of the thing. Took me a bit before I had the courage to pick it up and throw it out, because no way am I keeping it in my trash. After this little run in I bought roach repel and some traps. Haven't seen any since.

I like those too: some beetles are kind of majestic, certain butterflies have very beautiful colorations, ladybugs are nicer (to me) when their colors are the opposite to the typical (red patterns in black), and fireflies in the night are an amazing show that I'm not fortunate enough to have ever witnessed in person, sadly. The cycle of butterflies and other insects is interesting too.

Haha that's a genuine reaction! I can understand why you hate them. I actually started to like them at a time when I looked for a bit of information about some of them and their behavior, which made me think of them as very interesting creatures, sometimes even fascinating - the hive mind of bees and ants, for example. Also, the more information I had about the ones considered as most dangerous, the least dangerous I thought they were, mainly because, as a general rule, no insect whatsoever attacks without a good reason, and that reason is generally protecting itself or its home. For instance, I was attacked by a couple of wasps not too long ago (they both stang me while I was doing the laundry), and looking a bit later at the place where that happend I discovered that they had their nest right there, so I made them feel in danger because the clothes I was hanging up were touching the entrance to their nest.

Oh, and this is the first time I hear that someone's scared of butterfiles, so I find it weird too, but considering that they're kids I guess that they just see them as big insects that sometimes fly over their heads, and they don't like it. Maybe.

I had an encounter with a roach too. With a female one, to be more precise. How do I know it was a female? Because I had the information that female roaches have a smaller body than their male counterparts, but that difference in size is not translated into the wings, so female roaches can actually use them to glide. And the one I found was on a wall and, in an attempt to avoid being thrown away or killed by me, it actually glided towards my body and tried to hide inside my shirt. I wasn't worried, because I knew it wasn't going to hurt me, but it was an uncomfortable situation. However, I don't think it was nearly as big as the one you're describing - maybe yours belongs to some particularly big species from Japan.

About that cicada situation that both of you are commenting, I first thought that they could be playing dead, but I've never seen one having that behavior - I've caught them a lot of times just to have them on my hand for a while, and what they do to avoid that is just flying away. So I actually looked for information and I found a potential explanation. Basically, "it’s possible these cicadas have been paralyzed by a specialist predatory wasp. Dead looking cicadas are really common in areas where cicada killers are found, and it’s entirely possible that these cicadas have been paralyzed by a wasp who just couldn’t handle her prey." There's also a video in that page showing a wasp that isn't able to carry a cicada, it's kind of a hilariously sad spectacle.

Mosquitoes, horseflies, wasps and ticks are annoying. I like most other (Western European) bugs though. They're nice to watch, they're important for their ecosystems and they make all nature feel more alive.

I generally dislike bugs. Some spiders are cool, tarantula pets are alright, ladybugs are beautiful, bees are fun. However, most of them are a big nope for me. House centipedes in particular give me the creeps, they're very abundant around here. 

Cockroaches, though. Those dudes are the primary reason why I hate Summer. The anxiety they provoke on me is so strong that I barely can pick up their dead bodies, when I find them, that is, because you will never see me killing one of those things unless I have an insecticide. On one occasion I was laying on my bed and one of them dropped on my head, and I honestly wanted to die, I ended up sleeping outside that night because I didn't know where did the thing go. That was a couple of years ago, so it seems adulthood didn't solve my problem with these fellas. 

I'm aware that there are some species of cockroach that aren't so bad, there are even some very pretty ones of various colors. Madagascar hissing cockroaches in particular are quite cute. But, of course, Periplaneta americana naturally has to be the pest, because it's the grossest one, the fastest one and the hardest to kill. 

Well, they are important for the natural balance, I guess.

As long as they stay out of my house, I can tolerate them.

I'm somewhat indifferent to most bugs. Spiders from where I come from are considered good luck to have around the house.

When I was younger I was pretty scared of bugs in general - pretty much all of them even harmless ones like Moths, smaller spiders etc.

I slowly got over that in my teens and was mostly okay with them in my adult life. However....

I recently went on holiday to a remote area and ran into a rat sized spider ( I kid you not). That was terrifying.
