Yeah Doom 3 doesn't deserve a remake, no matter how old it is

That’s a really good question.
I remember I had a negative reaction to the news of a Resident Evil 4 remake, even though I love the game to death and really appreciated the RE2 remake (RE3 to a lesser extent).
I reacted negatively because 1) the game didn’t seem that old 2) it’s available everywhere, and 3) it’s practically perfect as is.
So I suppose my gut reaction is that a remake should target a game that is some combination of inaccessible, dusty, and flawed.
I don’t know if I can assign a specific time range to it, but I do think that it’s more difficult to target a 7th gen title for a 9th gen remake than it was, say, to target a 5th gen title for a 7th gen remake — only because the design philosophies and technology of recent gens don’t seem that far apart.
Anyway, great topic!
A remake is never warranted. Just put the originals on modern hardware and focus resources on creating new experiences.
A game can be good despite being a remake (RE2 for instance), but never because it's a remake. If you have to, make it a completely different experience to the original. The simple visual update remakes (Spyro reignited trilogy, Shadow of the Colossus) may be very well made and enjoyable in their own right, but history won't be kind to them, as it wasn't to colorized black and white movies, shot for shot remakes, and dubbed silent films, despite their popularity at the time.
My rule of thumb is if more than 2 gen it can warrant a remake, less than 2 gen should just be a remaster.
....but if there are enough fans want a remake regardless of how old/new the game is then who's to deny them that. I also think some games that are being remade can deserves to be retold differently if said game had mix reviews on the story.

So at least a few of those comments in those Avatar videos I get recommended in YouTube are made by teenagers? I kind of feel proud.
My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Unpopular opinion but definitely true
Just can't understand why people need remakes to be exactly the same as originals. Just play the original if you find it so perfect

People that hold the opposite opinion don't necessarily find the old games to be perfect, in a lot of cases that's why they want the update, to begin with, to adapt the content to modern standards and make it look like it released in the current year instead of a long time ago.

With the increasing diminishing returns and the exponential nature of system requirements, the amount of time that needs to pass is going to get bigger and bigger. 10 years of graphical improvements today doesn't look like like 10 years of graphical improvements from the days of the 4th gen or the 5th gen.

Nobody wants that though
At least nobody I know

Sounds like you do. I want remakes of games I liked. Obviously I don't want the things I liked about the game to be different in the remake otherwise it defeats the whole purpose of wanting a remake in the first place. If there aren't things you liked in the original that you want in the remake too then why on earth do you want a remake at all? |
Bold 1: Not that I want, but if they are significantly different then I'm certainly more ready to give it a try at least
Bold 2: Because sometimes the world, concept or story might be interesting but execution was either limited for technology or just aged badly
For me the purpose of a remake is to reimagine what was done before. Make the same thing again is nothing but laziness and lack of inspiration, no wonder why so many companies outsource their remakes
More than nothing, gaming the best qualities about games are daring, creativity, taking risks and having ambition. A copy of what was done before already fail to check any of those. It's OK to make a remake a copy and past of original, but they will never be great games for me, just good I guess
