How old does a game need to be to warrant a remake?

That’s a really good question.

I remember I had a negative reaction to the news of a Resident Evil 4 remake, even though I love the game to death and really appreciated the RE2 remake (RE3 to a lesser extent).

I reacted negatively because 1) the game didn’t seem that old 2) it’s available everywhere, and 3) it’s practically perfect as is.

So I suppose my gut reaction is that a remake should target a game that is some combination of inaccessible, dusty, and flawed.

I don’t know if I can assign a specific time range to it, but I do think that it’s more difficult to target a 7th gen title for a 9th gen remake than it was, say, to target a 5th gen title for a 7th gen remake — only because the design philosophies and technology of recent gens don’t seem that far apart.
