What's your favorite main series Metroid game?

Metroid 28 5.33%
Metroid II: Return of Samus 15 2.86%
Super Metroid 288 54.86%
Metroid Fusion 93 17.71%
Metroid: Zero Mission 39 7.43%
Metroid: Samus Returns 62 11.81%

Super. Not expecting a lot from Dread, to be honest.

My bet with The_Liquid_Laser: I think the Switch won't surpass the PS2 as the best selling system of all time. If it does, I'll play a game of a list that The_Liquid_Laser will provide, I will have to play it for 50 hours or complete it, whatever comes first.

Super Metroid is one of the best games ever made.

My second favorite would be Zero Mission. Awesome soundtrack.

I thought I was going to have to weigh all of the pros and cons to decide between Super Metroid and Metroid Prime but you made it easy for me; Super Metroid for sure in this poll.

My hope for Dread is that it's very similar to the SNES classic.  And that Kraid returns.

Super Metroid.

It was an amazingly atmospheric game back in the day... And it's gameplay has proven to be timeless.

Still do a play through every year.

Can't beat the original Metroid.  It's an amazing game.  I'm playing through Metroid 2 right now, and it seems pretty good so far too.  I don't really care for the other Metroid games, at least the ones I've tried.

I’m not in the mood to play 1 or super but they’ve always been my favorite. I’m enjoying return of Samus right now so I’ll pick it.

It’s like asking what’s your favorite color.. the answer changes depending on the context. Metroid 1 was my intro so it has that going for it. Super is the best made game of the entire series. Return of samus is the last one made that feels true to the original formula. I didn’t like fusion. I didn’t play samus returns. Zero M is good.

Fusion. The atmosphere is the best a mainline Metroid has ever accomplished. Everything is designed to make us feel in constant danger and even scared: from the presence of the X parasite to the SA-X always trying to hunt you down, the plethora of dangerous and unexpected situations (elevators that lose power half way; boilers about to make the whole station explode in a couple of minutes; the shadow of a mysterious giant monster flying on the background; a sudden power loss that makes doors and saving stations not working... The game is constantly trying to make sure that you don't feel in control of the situation at all. It wants you to feel nervous, scared and in tension. And Metroid Fusion does this flawlessly.

People don't like it as much as Super or Zero Mission because it's far more linear than any other Metroid. And while I see their point, I don't think the linearity of Fusion is a bad thing per se. I think this structure is perfectly justified and it never makes the game be "less" than other entries. Just different. And there's A LOT of stuff to collect anyway. Plenty of backtracking when getting new power ups in order to get missile expansions, energy tanks and other secrets... and many of those are very well hidden or require an interesting test of ability. So while the main story is linear, the game itself is packed with content and secrets.

Fusion also has the best story in a mainline Metroid. In the grand scheme of gaming, Fusion is nothing out of this world. But as a Metroid game... it really blows away the others. You get to know some of Samus thoughts and feelings just enough to not feel intrusive while helping to connect more with her. Also the whole Adam/Federation/Metroids/X Parasite situation is very well handled and is followed with a lot of interest. And the game has a great ending. Very emotional.

And now we've got SA-X's successor coming in October to make us shit our pants in terror.

At least we know from a news update on Metroid Dread that the E.M.M.I. can be killed.

Metroid other M is the best! I love how Samus just doesn’t use her abilities because some dude tells her not to… for reasons…

Super > Zero Mission > Fusion > Samus Returns

I like every game in the entire series but Super Metroid is my favorite. In fact, it's may favorite game ever. I avoid everything about Metroid Dread since the announcement because I want to experience it as blind as possible. I think it will feel pretty similar to Samus Returns and this is a good thing and a bad thing at the same time for me, but well, we'll see how it turns out. Samus Returns relied way too much on the counter mechanic, I hope it will still be there but just as an option rather than a necessity.
