If they are trying to do that, good luck to them. Sony's approach in the last couple of years has been sidelining japanese titles more and more, it would be nice if Xbox started to gain a bit more traction over there as well, as a wake up call for Sony.

There's no market for it, Sony aren't just leaving for no reason

I get that, but Microsoft is not going to lose much if they try anyway, they certainly can't do that much worse over there. If nothing else, they can always use the more japanese-centric games they promote to add more variety to their platform.

You know it deserves the GOTY.

I don't remember the source but it claimed Kojima Productions are working on multiple titles. I could see one of those titles being that episodic horror game that got canned for Stadia reemerging as an Xbox exclusive (or at least a Game Pass Day One title).

Hasn’t PS5 already sold like 600k in Japan in 5 months in spite of major supply issues? Clearly there is still a market. It might not be as large as it once was, due to Switch dominance, but it’s still very much there. As long as there are Japanese devs and Japanese gamers who care about high end graphics that Switch can’t handle, there is a subset of the Japanese market for MS and Sony to fight over

Forget 'Japan'. Look at it as a singular market, that importantly has different tastes.

Percentage of global marketshare Japan accounts for Playstation:

PS: 21%

PS4: 8.1%

If you're investing and you look at these statistics, it makes sense to significantly lower support and finances for the region. Specifically, when costs are rising and when there is a stronger overlap in other regions in regards to software.

Lets be real, Sony isn't fighting MS for Japan.

Right. MS just doesn't do good their even when they're really trying. Sony will probably continue to be #2 there in Japan without much effort of having to "beat" MS. The real fight is where it's always been... US and UK.
