I'm about to take on a fairly interesting casemodding project. I'm going to modify a DS Lite into a cellphone.
I'm purchasing a cheap (possibly broken) DS Lite to use. All I necessarily essentially need from the DS is the shel (unless I try doing something exquisite with it).
The issue lies here - I need to find a decent, cheap, easily dismantled cellphone to use for this. It doesn't have to be all that new a phone - I'm more concerned with the phone just working for the concept. Only catch is that it has to use SIM cards, and I'd prefer it to be T-mobile or unlocked by default (otherwise I'd have to unlock it to use it with my phone service).
The plan is going to be to modify the inside to have all the phone parts, with the ear speaker and the microphone on the outside (I'll be cutting holes for those and mounting them appropriately).
That's essentially the only requirements here. Beyond that, I'm pretty open to ideas. I have a few concepts in mind.
(1) Modify the top half of the system to be all cellphone. Maybe it'll run off the DS battery, maybe it'll have its own power source. I have no qualms with it being merely the "top half" of the brick. The bottom half, I could easily modify into a Gameboy Advance (using an old GBA's hardware). Heck, we've already got a GBA slot built-in, and I could do some cutting to make it cartridges fit better. If the phone includes a microSD slot, I'd modify the hole for the DS card to be for the microSD. This is easiest and probably what I'll end up doing.
(2) Modify it so the DS still works, just with a cellphone included in the same casing. I'd replace the DS buttons with the phone's buttons, making 2, 4, 6, and 8 the new A,B, X, and Y. * and # could be SELECT and START. The D-pad would merely be replaced with the cellphone's D-pad. PROBLEMS: I have no clue if this can even be done. In fact, I doubt it can. But if it could be figured out... I'll do it, no doubt. The biggest problems include if there's even enough space in the casing for the extra hardware, how I'd include a third screen (for the cellphone... maybe on the outside?), and how I'd integrate the buttons properly. Actually, the buttons wouldn't necessarily be too hard if I could just fit two sensors under one key. This is by far the cooler concept, just a lot more difficult to accomplish.
So, basically, here's the thing. If anybody knows any cellphones that would be best for this, please, let me know. Remember, it's gotta be fairly cheap (attainable for less than $100 for certain, less than $50 preferable), it has to be easily dismantled, it has to use SIM cards, and it'd rock if it was T-mobile from the get-go. Also, if it has speakerphone and/or a microSD slot, even better.
And if you happen to be able to find any sites where somebody has done the same/a similar project, let me know.
