And you have to account also, that Wii has a bit lower attach rate because Nintendo dropped Wii support early. So it probably would be higher than 9 if Nintendo kept supporting the console.

I'm pretty sure Nintendo included Wii Sports apart of their software sales which was a packaged game so that attach rate number is inflated by nearly 1 so the attach rate is closer to 8. Still an impressive number though for a console that sold 100M and was dropped relatively quick.

Nintendo dropped.

Yeah the notion that Wii owners bought it for Wii Sports/Fit, played nothing else, and stowed in away in the attic forever after a week was always an invention of salty fanboys, bitter that it was beating their preferred system.

It's more than that. Ever since the Wii, gaming in general became more popular AND more accepted by the society. So nowadays, even the casuals play "hardcore" games once in a while, and are not afraid to spend a little money on a console.

My (locked) thread about how difficulty should be a decision for the developers, not the gamers.

Not surprising, the hybrid is a great concept, an idea not only cool, but also very practical, that for a significant minority of gamers manages to fill alone all their gaming needs. I suspect Ninty could have had that idea even before, it just needed that enough CPU and docked GPU power to replace also the previous Ninty home console became available on portables at the right price.

That might have been true! And since the “actual” base was greater than Wii U but smaller than GameCube, those 14-19 million people bought the other 860 million pieces of software, many bought Mario Kart Wii 4 or 5 times over!

But think about it, it’s quite amazing, the Nintendo base during the Wii generation loved the console so much that it had an attach rate of 60!

There’s a remote possibility my theory might have some problems...

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

Is the conventional thinking that out of 100m Wii owners, only 15% went to WiiU and the rest disengaged?

Did none of the rest move to Sony/MS? If they did then that would mean the 8th gen saw a decline in the traditional support for the 'twins' wouldn't it?

There is actually a high number of people that did not even know the WiiU was Nintendo's next console.  I know someone who was given one for xmas, and it sat in his closet because he though it was just an add on for his Wii.

I mentioned the Switch to him just after it came out, and he said, "Man Nintendo has not released anything since the Wii.  Its about time!"

When I told him what the WiiU was, he was shocked to realize he had Nintendo's next console all along and never knew.  So I would not be suprised if a number of casual gamers were just waiting on Nintendo's next console lol.

Of course I don't believe that only 15% of Wii owners moved to another console, but it makes for a fun story.

I only discovered about Wii U when I read the first news about of NX (placeholder name for what was going to be the Switch), I guess it was 2015

So yeah, many people like me wasn't aware of Wii U existence

I didn't owned a Wii though. I actually hated the system everytime I tried it (uncle had one). Switch was the successor of my 3DS

It's commendable that you are friends with someone who is clearly suffering from severe mental retardation. It would be irrational to draw any conclusions from your friend, given the vast majority of humanity has an intellect above that of a Capuchin monkey and can deduce the difference between two different video game consoles with even the most basic knowledge of electronics.

If your assessment of him is true, it is rather impressive how successful he is.  Imagine making assumptions on a person's intelligence based on such baseless information.

That is the most ridiculous story I've ever heard. Did he even take the shortest glance at the box right in front of his eyes before putting it away and never even bothering to try it out?
