6 million aligned lead over PS4... maybe, just maybe Switch will win this one after all.
Getting 7.7 million in 12 month compared to PS4 is huge.
In 3 month PS4 will be at roughly 63.8 million units. This then is August 2017 for PS4.
In the last 3 month of 2019 Switch sold roughly 11 million.
Assuming 2020 holiday will be similar, Switch then will lead with 77 million -vs- 63.8 million - thats roughly +13.2 million.
PS4 was at 77 million mid March 2018. This will be mid July 2021 for Switch.

I hope that's sarcasm and self-depreciating humor at this point. Switch is 6m ahead with one holiday season less. As always, 12 month intervalls of comparison work best for consoles that didn't launch anywhere close to in the same month. 12 months - Switch ahead by 2m Year 5 and 6 for the PS4 are ~19m and ~14m, respectively. Would be a major upset if Switch didn't continue the trend of growing its lead over the PS4 every year. There's a good chance that Switch's life to date sales by month 72 already exceed the PS4's lifetime sales. |
It's definitely on track to sell more, I just try to never discount Nintendo's ability to be their own worst enemy and fumble the ball.

Switch Vs. 3DS and Wii U Global: Gap change in latest month: 1,554,540 - Switch Gap change over last 12 months: 12,296,006 – Switch Total Lead: 8,911,374 - Switch Switch Total Sales: 65,713,911 3DS and Wii U Total Sales: 56,802,537 September 2020 is the 43rd month that the Nintendo Switch has been available for. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the Switch by 1.55 million units when compared to the combined sales of the 3DS and Wii U during the same timeframe. In the last 12 months, the gap has grown in favor of the Switch by 12.30 million units. The Switch leads by 8.91 million units. The 3DS launched in February 2011 (however, 3DS sales have been aligned to March 2011, since it only launched at the end of February in Japan), the Wii U launched in November 2012, and the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. The holiday periods between the Switch and 3DS lineup, however, the Wii U holiday is offset from the Switch. The 43rd month for the Nintendo Switch is September 2020, for the Nintendo 3DS it is September 2014 and for the Wii U it is May 2016. The Switch has sold 65.71 million units, while the 3DS and Wii U have sold 56.80 million units during the same timeframe. The 3DS and Wii U did not reach current Switch sales until month 54. The 3DS and Wii U have sold 89.37 million units lifetime through September 2020. The Switch is 22.66 million units behind the 3DS and Wii U. The Wii U has been off the market for several years only selling 13.56 million units lifetime, while the 3DS recently ended production and the few remaining stock units left in stock will likely be sold out by the end of the year. |
This one is particularly satisfying to watch. By this time next year, Switch should have overtaken 3DS + Wii U combined, in just 4 and a half years.

After that is the Wii then GB then PS4 (it should be ahead of the GB soonish), then the two kings - DS and PS2. |
If Nintendo doesn't cut the Switch short prematurely, Wii, PS1, and GB should be in the bag. After that it gets tricky.

DS and PS2 are possible only if Nintendo keeps supporting it for another three or four years and drops the price. |
Four more years at least, and get it down to like $200 for the base and $100 for the Lite.
August 2017 PS4 was at 19.9 Million. Thats December 2020 for Switch.
2019 October to December Switch sold almost 4 million units. So like 25.9 Million switch -vs- 19.9 Million PS4 is pretty possible in 3 month. That would be a lead of 6 million. PS4 was at 25.9 Million at the end of October 2018, that will be like 14 month later than Switch.
That really is impressive. Seems like Switch can surpass PS4 in the US while PS4 is still "kind of alive". (holiday 2021)
And maybe Switch will sell even more - even 4.5-5 million during these 3 month is possible.
I just remebered Wii and NDS December 2009 NPD Numbers. xD But I guess these numbers (for those who dont know: Wii was at 3.8 million units, while NDS was at 3.3 million units - and both sold roughly 5 Million units each during November + December 2009) will never never ever happen again.
Switch has sold about 2/3 of PS4's LTD American sales in half the time.
About the only way Switch doesn't win this one is if they rush out a successor way too early.
Switch is definitely beating PS4 in the US. It's already 2/3 of the way there with it's best holiday still to come.
Switch has already passed PS4 in Japan and is going to outsell it by a mile when all is said and done. I'd like to see a Switch vs PS4 in RoW chart, but I'd wager Switch has a comfortable lead there too. The only territory where PS4 has been performing better than Switch is Europe. And yet there are still a fair amount of people who doubt Switch can outsell PS4. Switch has it in the bag. Switch vs. PS4 should not really even be a question any more. The more interesting discussion is Switch vs. DS or Switch vs PS2.
curl-6 bet me that PS5 + X|S sales would reach 56m before year end 2023 and he was right.

PlayStation 4 Vs. Wii US: Gap change in latest month: 134,216 - PS4 Gap change over last 12 months: 2,501,571 - PS4 Total Lead: 7,026,576 PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 34,142,53 Wii Total Sales: 41,169,106 September 2020 is the 83rd month that the PlayStation 4 has been available for in the US. During the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared with the Nintendo Wii during the same timeframe. The PlayStation 4 has caught up to the Wii by 134,216 units in the last month and in the last 12 months outsold the Wii by 2.50 million units. The Wii currently leads by 7.03 million units. Both consoles launched in November in the US. The Wii launched in November 2006, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holidays for the two consoles do lineup. The 83rd month for the PlayStation 4 is September 2020, while for the Wii it is September 2013. The PlayStation 4 has sold 34.14 million units, while the Wii sold 41.17 million units during the same timeframe. The Wii sold units 41.70 million lifetime in the US, therefore the PlayStation 4 needs to sell another 7.56 million units to catch up to the lifetime sales of the Wii. |
7 million more in the US alone is a long shot for the PS4 with the PS5 out in a few weeks, but not impossible.
