Forums - Nintendo - Best Rare game on N64

I think the best is...

Banjo Kazooie 14 17.50%

Banjo Tooie 1 1.25%

Perfect Dark 18 22.50%

Goldeneye 007 20 25.00%

Conker's Bad Fur Day 11 13.75%

Diddy Kong Racing 4 5.00%

Jet Force Gemini 3 3.75%

Blast Corps 2 2.50%

Kill Instinct Gold 1 1.25%

Donkey Kong 64 6 7.50%

Total:80

Kinda feel they have all aged like shit. DK64 sucked back then. Banjo had charm but was annoying as hell with too much shit to collect. At least in the pre F2P MMO era. Perfect Dark was a slideshow. Much worse than Turok 2 and while T2 was great it ran badly. PD ran even worse. Conker was never good but a fun novelty, Honestly felt the EA Bond game was better. The World is Not Enough. My fave N64 Rareware game was Jet Force Gemini from the sci-fi setting. Had a cool atmosphere and an amazing OST. Some of it reminded me of Galaxy Quest and the landing music sounded out of Star Trek. Considering how far TPS games have come. It had aged very poorly. That game came out 7 years before Gears of War. 7 years ago TLOU came out so it's not that large of a gap.

*Edit* Dammit. Forgot Conker. That game was/is spectacular. I replay it all the time...on Xbox. Still, at the time the game was a miracle on the N64 hardware.

I'd say the Xbox version was a miracle for the hardware too, damn thing almost looks like an early PS3/360 game.

It's tough to beat the enjoyable multiplayer and iconic status of Goldeneye. Perfect Dark improved and fleshed out much of the gameplay but never *quite* resonated with me in the same way.

Diddy Kong Racing is probably a close second - very underrated kart racer than got overshadowed by Mario Kart 64 at the time.

So I s'pose Goldeneye overall but Perfect Dark and Diddy Kong Racing get honorable mentions.

Banjo Kazooie
Goldeneye
Donkey Kong 64

That'd be my top 3.

It would be Conker for me. I still play it today (via Xbox one) and if they develop a fully fledged game for Series X then that is all that I’ll need to buy one.

Goldeneye. Perfect Dark is a close second. It's multiplayer is even better with the bots (I hated Perfect Sim so much), but Goldeneye laid the foundation and had a great singleplayer.

I did not realize how prolific Rare was on the N64. Why did Nintendo sell them to Microsoft? Seems like they were a huge asset.

Because Nintendo are morons at times.  They lay out all this good ground work every generation, Then somehow find something to cock it up.

For me Perfect Dark. Yes Goldeneye will always have a special place in the heart and more memorable. But Perfect Dark took it to the next level and improved on everything.

Never played Perfect Dark and Conker, so I’ll leave those out. Even without those, they were probably the best developer in the world at the time. My top 3, in this order would be;

1. GoldenEye 007
2. Blast Corps
3. Banjo-Kazooie

I just have played Goldeneye, Jet Force Gemini, KI Gold and Blast Corps.

And my Winner iiiiiiiis........ Blast Corps

This usually tends to be whenever they see a significant amount of success and get complacent ('92-'93 when they were massively losing ground to Sega in NA, late N64 and GameCube era, Wii U Era, etc..) Then they realize they're losing touch and wisen up, again appealing to the mass market, making better decisions, and more quality games (late SNES, Wii, Switch). It seems to be an endless cycle with them..
