Battletoads is back in the best possible way. A must-have within Xbox Game Studios.

Battletoads is a game that shouldn’t work in 2020. The originals were brutal tests of patience and I mean come on, it has been nearly three decades. Who under 30 actually remembers these characters? Still, for someone like me it is a real treat to see Microsoft once again return a former beloved Rare property back to its glory. I like where this is going and if we can bring the rest of the crew back, I will once again relive my youth. Banjo, Conker, and Joanna are next on the docket, let’s hope they see the same love and care as these toads have.

We’ve waited 25 years for a proper Battletoads sequel, and Rare finally delivered. It’s art style may put off some players in the long run, but the overall solid game play can hook you quickly. If you can overlook the slightly strange control combos, you will have fun playing through this alone or with friends with local co-op. It definitely won’t appeal to everyone, but I can recommend giving this one a try, even if it’s through Xbox Game Pass. Once you play it for yourself, you are likely to see it’s charm.

Battletoads is without a doubt one of the funniest games of this generation, and it's a pretty nifty beat 'em up to boot. It does have the occasional lull when things start to feel a little repetitive, but by and large it's a hugely entertaining experience and well worth your time.

What hurts this 2020 take on a beloved franchise is an inability to stay to course for long enough to whet the appetites of long time fans. The brawling segments are too few and far between, and while the other game modes that pop up are very well designed and executed, you will find yourself longing for fewer of them, so that you can swing your fists for longer.

Considering my entire knowledge of the series before this installment was all based around memes, I’d say Battletoads far exceeded expectations. That said, the shortcomings it does possess keep it from joining the ranks of brawlers, like Streets of Rage 4, as a genre-defining title.

While the art style and crude humor may be the most polarizing aspects on the surface, the lack of any consistency when it comes to gameplay and level design is the real disappointment in what was supposed to be the triumphant return of Battletoads.

Both Streets of Rage 4 and Battletoads turned out better then I thought they would.

If anybody with a PS slant is gonna make a Xbox Studios thread, I’m glad it’s you.

It’s good that it’s seemingly holding above 70. The lack of online coop hurt its numbers surely but it’s fast gameplay and in-game genre variety seem to make it overall a good time.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

I waited quite some time for Battletoads and Flight Simulator thread, since no one posted I decided to do. And despite not being very good at it when young I have very fond memmories of it, and despise the changes that I didn't like on the visual it improved a lot and I even ended up liking how it looks (yes ignore a little the facial) and the comedic expressions. Hope I can visit my friend soon enough and give it a try, get pissed at the deaths and hate the game while loving it =p

And a good point is that it certainly is an unique game to be on the roster of Xbox and GP, shall bring a good number of subs from nostalgia. Flight Simulator I won't even comment since I'm not that into piloting but man it is a powerful game, still have its bugs but who can fault it on such a big project? This have been a very good month for Xbox after a long period of slow releases.

Currently playing it, better than I expected. 8/10 is about where I score it so far

Played a few levels so far and it's perfectly decent. Punching things is satisfying and there's a nice variety in the combat. Not gonna win any awards but around 70/100 seems about right.

So there is no physical of this game? Would not most people who would be fans of this be retro gamers who collect? Why would MS not put out a disc version?

They partnered with a company to do retro collectibles, but they are quite pricey:

Still not a physical of the Xbox game. Tho the other stuff is neat for fans. Unless MS is finally going to do LRG would would be neat.

Bite my shiny metal cockpit!

Feels like a generouse score from reviewers in general (from alot of pro xbox sites).
That has to be from nostaliga.
