Forums - Gaming - Is it really worth it to be an early adopter of a console?

Yes.

We keep getting these threads that compare the PS3/360 to PC's, and how PC's that can compete with consoles visually for around the same price (~$600).

Well, I got my 360 in 2005 for $500, and my PS3 for $600 in 2006. In those years, you would have needed to spend thousands to get something that looked as good.

Here we are two and three years later, and the cost of the consoles have only gone down a little bit. I would say it's completely worth it.

Except, the games didnt look that flash and there weren't that many to play. So not worth it.

Tease.

It was for me. I work in retail for I didn't have to wait at all but had to get a bundle I didn't like. Anyway, it was so worth it with the Wii. There were a couple dozen Wii Parties at my home and I had a great time at almost all of them. It was also great taking it to other peoples' places.

I never bought another console at launch and may never do it again so I guess the answer is, it depends.

The games looked great (PGR on the 360 was awesome for its day, still is).  As for quantity, that's a comment against any early adoption. If you bought a 1080p TV when it came out, there was nothing you could view on it. If you bought a DX10 video card when it came out, there were no games for it.

It also depends on how early you consider someone an early adopter. If it's in the first year, there were plenty of games for both the PS3 and 360 1 year into there life (and many of them looked great).

well, late adopters in europe for the wii got a wiisports disk without the real case. I got mine with case so I rule.

I usuall buy a system a six months to a year after it has been out. The only system I bought with a month of its release was the Sega Genesis. The Reason Why I wait a 6 months to year after a console is out is for it have a more established library. Plus During this time I am still playing games from the previous generation. In this generation I bought a PS3 but I am still playing games like Suikoden 5 and Star Ocean 3 until more JRPG's come out for the PS3

Systems I own (Games)

Sega: Dreamcast (40) , Saturn (25), Genesis (50), Masters System (10), Game Gear (20)

Sony: PS1 (8), PS2 (60) , PS3 (5), PSP (12)

Atari: 2600 (18) , 7800 (10), Lynx (10)

For the Wii, it was worth it. My family, friends and relatives had a great Holidays playing Wii Sports.

I did not see one person here mention the fact that besides getting it early you can turn around and sell it on e-bay for 4 times what it's worth. Which like 20 people I know did and made thousands off the 360 and PS3.

SO making at least $1,000 for standing in line for one day yeah that sounds worth it.

As for after opening day well if you can afford it and you want the games why would you wait?

"Back off, man. I'm a scientist."

Your theories are the worst kind of popular tripe, your methods are sloppy, and your conclusions are highly questionable! You are a poor scientist. Especially if you think the moon landing was faked.

I never buy a console until there is a game i really want to play. That's why Wii was the first console i ever bought at launch
